I don't think you can win long term in the NFL with a zone read based offensive scheme. I also don't think a quarterback can perform consistently in the NFL over the long haul without developing the requisite passing skills from the pocket that are needed to have a consistent high level of production as a quarterback. I think something can be said about the development of the system as well.
Looking for Matthew's to pick it up and be a factor in this game. We're going to need him and Clay to be consistent and show up. Same for Miller, who needs to continue to run hard.
All four of those teams have very effective running games which assures they don't have to rely on their QBs the way we do. Besides we don't have a prototype that proves this type of QB play can work over the longterm. We have an entire history of examples that prove pocket passing skills can be relied on into a QBs late 30s.
Yup, that middle of the field in a game like this is so important..quick safe passes to players that can make things happen is the way to go, he is a guy that can do something after the catch.
Yes, still pissed about that TD to Matthews over the middle in the Carolina game... hoping to see more plays from Matthews as he has only had 2 or 3 catches in each game since his 11 catch breakout a month ago against the Bucs.
Well, I was a very big proponent of this style of Qb before the offenses came into the league..now that both have arrived I'm all in..I'm not saying Brady or Bree's, or Manning led offense aren't better, I'm saying that if you don't have one of those mothers you better do something..
The fact of the matter is that it is in their gameplan..Wilson hands off to lynch at least 5 to 10 times a game out of it, is there a place I can look that up?
If we are looking for a 3 to 4 year run, these kind of QBs could work. The thing is that their athleticism must remain a threat - and wear and tear or a nasty injury can take that threat away. I'm just not convinced these guys will be doing the same things at 30 as they are doing now. The questions will then be...have they themselves adapted and are they still effective players? We know for certain that pocket passers can be effective up into their late 30s.
I can't debate that..it's an excellent point...however, I want to win football games and superbowls..I think you should use every once of a players skillset.
Interesting you phrased it this way. There was ( maybe still is but I doubt it ) a saying that older scouts in baseball ( mostly of Italian ancestry ) would say . They would describe a prospect as having a "good face" , always took it as they meant he looked the part.
Well, to me the "Thill should run/not run" has merit as a discussion HOWEVER, it really boils down to the amount he would run, and reliance on him doing so. Pocket passing wins football games, it is that simple, a Qb who can pass from the pocket and run enough to pick up KEY first downs or even td's is that much more effective at pressuring a defense. THill can be an effective runner, these are "MUST WIN" type games, it would be foolish to not use his entire skill set on a snowy field up in Pittsburgh
If Ryan can get to a Rodgers level of leaving the pocket that is what I'm looking for long term. A 15 year Qb who can do enough or hurt you enough if you just play man and turn your back to him. He has shown that the last few games. Please don't jump on the Rodgers-Tannehill comparison except where he has the same kind of ability to escape the pocket and pick up first downs. Ryan has a long way too go to be Rodgers level, top 5, QB.
