The toe tap play to Clay was a clutch play. The would be TD pass to Matthews was a clutch play. The third down play on the second last drive would have been a 1st if not for the penalty. And finally the second last play was right in Wallace' mitts.

We have a pattern developing here.

Defence gave it on a plate to Tannehill and the offense, they didn't put the points on the board, stop making excuses for the QB

See this is the fallacy that most Fin Fans fall into. A focus on results without a focus on the process of getting results. The process of getting results is every player on the team doing their job to win the game. For a QB to be successful, the players around him have to do their jobs.

    It's really not that complex.

Sorry but at this point there's got to be a lot of "agree to disagree" on the deep throw issue.

The first deep shot to Wallace, the one he scored a touchdown on, the reason Wallace scored a touchdown there is because he finally located and adjusted to the football in a way that he had not been doing either in Miami or Pittsburgh the last two seasons. He does it sometimes, does not do it most of the time. That time he did it. The ball was slightly underthrown but the distance (about 54 yards) would have pushed ANY quarterback to their utmost limit while rolling to their right side. It was a fantastic throw and a fantastic catch and that produced a fantastic result.

The second deep shot, I say to anyone who claims this was underthrown, YOU try it. The distance was about 60 yards. Perhaps even further. I also say something else to people who claim this was an underthrow. Track over 500 distances and speeds for intermediate-to-deep passes across college and the NFL among strong-armed quarterbacks and tell me how often you see a ball go 60+ yards measured in a straight line. Go ahead. I'll wait. Bottom line, it's a RARE throw. One I've only seen a handful of times and I track a lot of this sh-t among the STRONGEST arms in the business. The throw pushed Tannehill to his absolute limit. It would have pushed almost any quarterback to his absolute limit.

Why was it an underthrow then? Because AGAIN the route did not match the backfield timing. Wallace's "out and up" on the play was a hell of a lot more "up" than "out". I'm not blaming Wallace, I think he's coached to run the route that way. Meanwhile in the backfield there's another play-fake. Not just ANY play-fake, a play-fake from under center. A half-roll. The play proceeded exactly as coach but a 60 yard pass still didn't cut the mustard. Ask yourself, why is that? Because the play design does not account for Wallace's speed.

I told you guys this before when Mike Sherman offered his reaction to the San Diego underthrow. He said it was an underthrow. He didn't say anything about the timing of the play. I said that told me right there two things. One, Tannehill and Wallace are not being coached to run their routes and adjust the drop in the backfield to get their timing right, and TWO, they WILL mis-match the backfield timing with Wallace's route again. Sure enough, they did. Hate to say I told ya so, but I told ya so.

The third ball, an overthrow. Guess what though. Tannehill has been taking crap including from his own coaches all week about underthrows to Wallace. He's been instructed to "let it rip". A one yard overthrow is an incomplete pass. A one yard underthrow is not only complete, but if the receiver tracks and adjusts to the football properly you might not even recognize it as an underthrow. You instruct the quarterback to "let it rip" because suddenly you hate underthrows more than overthrows, you're going to get overthrows. That will happen.

I hear stuff about wrong shoulder or "ball placement" and all I can do is shake my head. There's no such thing as "ball placement" on a 150 to 180 foot throw. There really isn't. You're asking the guy throw into a target area. You're not asking him to bull's eye the thing. That's what you pay the receiver for, to see the ball in the air, adjust to it properly, play off the defensive back and finish the catch. If you just want a person that runs fast and can be taught to catch a perfectly thrown football then go buy Christine Ohuruogu and pay her a bunch of money. I prefer to give my money to football players that play football the right way.

If the Falcons end the year with the first overall pick, should we trade up for Bridgewater? Serious question.

So while I ate my nice big steak... I dont really feel that disgusted with this loss. I didn't drink during the game today. I said at halftime, just as the second half was starting to my wife, and to my dog... Get ready for the Dolphins collapse in the second half. Sure enough. It happened.

To me... this loss isnt on Tannehill, Wallace, Philbin, the OL, or whoever. It's on everyone. Those first four, and everyone else in this entire organization. Ireland, Ross, Philbin, the players, the coaches, hell, even the water boys.

Offense left points, and plays on the field with poor execution. Defense gave up a lead, coaches coached not to loose, rather than to win. Ireland put this mess together, and Ross was ok with all of it.

    They're all to blame.

Yes, there is a pattern developing. You're highlighting a few of his good plays while ignoring all the ones that caused us to leave a ton of points on the board. :p

    • Tannehill going 1 for 7 on 3rd & 6 or less in the first half wasn't clutch.
    • 3rd down INT on the first drive wasn't clutch.
    • Severely overthrowing of a WIDE OPEN Wallace for an easy TD wasn't clutch.
    • Underthrowing a wide open Wallace for what would've been an easy TD wasn't clutch.
    • throwing the last deep ball over Wallace's WRONG SHOULDER making it an incredibly tough catch after the pirouette wasn't clutch.
    • missing an open Matthews on 3rd & 4 on Carolina's 43 that cost us potential points wasn't clutch.
    • attempting an ill-advised 3rd & 3 to Clay which forced us to settle for a FG wasn't clutch.
    • running out of bounds with 4 minutes to play which allowed the clock to stop for Carolina wasn't clutch.

A- ****ing-men to this. I'd like to see any QB that consistently throws perfect lasers 50 to 60 yards down the field. The expectation is ridiculous. QBs who have actual top end receivers merely need to throw it into an area and their guy makes a play on it. Wallace was a terrible signing and with any luck it will get Ireland fired. I can catch footballs more often than not when they come right into my hands, are completely uncontested, and hit me perfectly in stride. As can pretty much any WR in the NFL. There are tons of those that don't cost 12M a year.

Tannehill played a really good game. and if you think those deep balls that he threw as he was running away from a collapsed pocket 50-60 yards weren't perfect well too bad. Not to many QB's in HISTORY would have made a perfect throw like that. nevermind 3 of them

I don't think fans complain about the DEEP BALL, technically they do but I think everyone is aware the 20+ throws are very low percentage around the league and it's valiant of you to stick up for Tanny with such in depth analysis but its unnecessary. The intermediate throws are what the critical eye want Tannehill to improve on, the 11-20 yds is where I think an analysis is warranted. His YPA is also I think 6.7, might be higher after this game but that would be nice to see that a bit higher. Fans are being too critical if they want great accuracy over 20+ yards. He's at 47.9% on 11-20 with 5 INT. Roethlisberger is throwing at 50% with only 2 INT from that range. I'd like to see him at least in the low 50-55% in that range. Rodgers throws 59-62% in that range, but that's why he is Rodgers. But even Nick Foles with similar O-Line problems is hitting on 63% of 11-20 which is just other worldly. Ultimately I think it's that 11-20 RANGE that people want his accuracy to improve. People like the BIG PLAY, the Home Run Ball, but I just want time eating drives that end in Touchdowns.

The two plays that really aggrevated me was the under throw to Wallace that would've led to a 80 yard TD instead I believe we didn't score on that drive. And the one time Tanny actually leads Wallace on a deep ball...he goes all Brian Hartline on us and takes a poor path to the ball.

On the last play I think you could argue by watching Alens cut up that once again Tannehill failed to anticipate an open WR in Wallace, he Atleast gets the ball into the vicinity giving Mike a shot at it....they both failed.

    I blame both the pricks

No they didn't. They failed to stop a 4th down conversion. That stop would have won the game.

Our coaches lost this game. Stupid Playcalling on both sides.

As good a post as I have seen in a very long time. I was sitting with my brother right after the half and said" how long before the Dolphin avalanche?" It was just a matter of time. Have seen it so many times over and over and over. Why does it still shock us? yet it does. We have seen coach upon coach..asst upon asst..off coordinator upon off coordinator..defense upon defense...all do what we they did today. Tell me most of us were not waiting for the other shoe to drop? Tell me most of us could not see it coming? We had to see it no? Tell me most of us just knew it was going to end this way?
I really wonder if the players feel the same way? the coaches? Coach the same conservative way...make the same boneheaded mistakes...coach and play so damn scared that you get to the point of freezing...unable to do anything but just watch the inevitable. Its on every single one of them.

As an ex QB I have tried it. That was on Tannehill. The play was set up perfectly and Tannehill had zero pressure in his face. He flat out lolligagged it, plain and simple.

right, and the backfield timing was off b/c Tannehill showed no sense of urgency on his end. He was slow to his point. With a fast receiver like Wallace he's gotta know he needs to tighten up the footwork and have no wasted motion, nor take his sweet time getting the pass off.

That's unrelated to this play. "Letting it rip" pertains to designed long throws to Wallace where Tannehill knows he's going deep and it's difficult to overthrow him. This particular play was different b/c it wasn't a designed deep ball and Wallace clearly didn't have enough room to chase anything down. You don't let it rip when your receiver is only about 30 yards down field.

Yes, the QB throws into the expansive target area... over the correct shoulder. Since when does throwing to the correct shoulder translate into hitting bull's eyes or dropping it into the bucket? You realize you can throw to the correct shoulder and still be off target by a good chunk of yards, right? The only difference is it doesn't require the receiver to pirouette mid route and force him to relocate the ball; instead he can run laterally and continue tracking it uninterrupted.

I'm sorry but blaming the coaches is just looking for a specific scapegoat. Yes, Coyle ****ed up at the end of the 1st half, but other than that the defense played well for pretty much the entire game. They just couldn't make a play at the end. The offense couldn't do crap in the second half. They tried different things, they kept it balanced, but Carolina's defense just outplayed us. We couldn't run yet again. What are the coaches supposed to do?

WADR, anyone who has never played QB should not be disputing this point.

I wish I could find the tape of me connecting on a 54 yarder over the correct shoulder of my receiver with some pressure in my face and a defender on my receiver's hip and another DB a yard in front of him.... as a freshman in high school. Sorry but what you're saying is dramatic and unfounded.

People still heavily debating the long ball, huh? This must be the new go/go-go.

Both guys are responsible. Tannehill can make some better throws and Wallace can make better adjustments with the ball in the air.

Again, people want to assign specific scapegoats when the reality is the problem falls on way more than one person's shoulders.

Yup you're right, it's so foolish to think wide open receivers in this league actually catch the ball in stride for a TD. Foolish I tell ya. :001_rolleyes:

That is a poor generalization. We have three SB winning QBs with sub-.500 records because they are on poor teams. You have another team (Falcons) with a highly paid QB staring down the 1st overall pick. You have an all time great (Brady) who has been decidedly ordinary this year because he doesn't have high caliber players around him. It's going on league-wide.

But as the narrative has become, this all too is Tannehill's fault.

I love listening to NFL commentators make excuses for all-time greats or "anointed ones." Right now they're essentially blaming injuries for Luck's recent poor play.

Aren't we down 5 starters on offense from the beginning of the year? I don't hear anyone cutting Tannehill any slack for this.

No points in the second half. Gifted fg in the first half. No stops on the final panther drive.

They all deserve to be canned. When's the last time we scored a td in the fourth?

They should stop running the ball if it isn't working. We had so many drives start out at 2nd and 10+ because we lost yards.

It all comes down to coaching and they're all poor at it.

54 yards air time.... except I was 15 years old, 5'8 150, and had only about 6 games of QB experience under my belt at the time.
So in your opinion those 9 extra yards should be a deal breaker for a 6'4 225, 25 year old professional with about 66 total games of QB experience? Sorry, not buying it.
