It is more then I thought. Until FH is up at full speed I suggest going to this site for this info. it is updated almost daily so it is almost always correct. Before everyone rags too much on Randy Mueller, remember that one big reason he made the moves he did this year was to clear up this money in the future.

    http://www.phinzmania.com/salary/DolphinsSalaryCap.htm

Dead Money is the term commonly applied to salary-cap charges for players no longer on the roster. It is basically their bonus money which is pro rated over their years on contract.

As one person put it..."Basically it's the payback for all the mistakes you've made in freeagency or, to a lesser extent, in the draft," said an official who manages the cap for an AFC franchise. "In fact, in our offices, we even call it 'mistake money' sometimes. You know how you might buy a couch because it looks good on the showroom floor and then, when you get it home, the thing is an abomination in the living room? And a year later, you're out buying another couch, because you can't look at the first one any longer? Well, 'dead money' is the same principle as that ugly couch. It's gone, but you're making payments on it. You still owe for that mistake you made."

Here are some of our biggest ones left. The way I understand it, you can take the "hit" over one year or two. I'm assuming that we are going to get rid of all of it this year.

    Chris Chambers 3.823 Million
    Kevin Carter 3.825 Million
    Jeno James 2.125 Million
    Joey Harrington 2.217 Million
    Randy McMichael 4.212 Million
    Daunte Culpepper 1.400 Million
    Olindo Mare 1.250 Million

So when you see people say "draft McFadden and trade Ronnie Brown", just remember that we will have to still pay Ronnie when he leaves. Cam and Randy are taking the hit for what should have started years ago.

I was watching the 2004 Patriots-Dolphins game last night and even then JT was telling John Madden that our defense was getting old and their time was now or never. And that was 3 years ago. Bill Bates was our coach with Nick Satan coming in.

"It was the best of times and it was the worse of times"

25 million under? so what if we get rid of veterans like Chris Liwenski, Will Allen, Keith Traylor retires...if we DO end up trading Jason Taylor and Zach Thomas. Or if we trade Joey "loudmouth" Porter. i really liked it when we got him last year, but all he does is mouth off and do nothing to prove anything. would we be taking a big hit by trading him away, for say a 4th round pick? or would we be more and more under the cap? i seriously think Donnie Spragan and Derrick Pope switching every couple of plays, can do a decent job at Porter's position.

Getting rid of Porter wil be too much of a cap hit and why would you want to get rid of Will Allen, he is our best secondary player.

We'll have plenty of room to spend.

Bill Bates isn't real what? We don't care about his street cred. :D
j/k B. Bates was a hard hitting S for the cowpokes back in the early 90s.

i shoulda said...IF we sign Trufant or Asomugha, u could part ways with Allen to save money. Michael Lehan, though sometimes inconsistent, IS a pretty good CB. hes never gonna be pro bowl, or top 10....but hes good.

or if Allen is cheap, u could ditch Goodman and Daniels, who are both not so good.

im all for keeping will allen. hell, his value increases if we get a guy like trufant who would line up vs. the #1 wr, letting allen take the #2. keep will allen!

Why would you want to get rid of Porter?

Right now he's playig the best on our defense, besides I think he is exactly the 'body type' of a linebacker that Parcells likes. He was not 100% at the start of the year and I guess our defense wasn't as similar to the Steelers D as he thought it was...

He's good with the younger players as well. I think Zach will be sipping pina coladas on the beach before Porter leaves here...

This is offpoint but it looks like Indy is pretty high on a guy we cut. Sabans 7th round pick, wide reciever Devin Aramoshou ( i know I butchered the spelling) Maybe he wasn't a mistake. Maybe we cut him too fast. Watch Indys game and you'll see him as their third reciever. I know their depleted with injuries but geesh if we pick him and he turns out great for Indy.....OUCH! Is that the opposite of dead money?

We've made plenty of mistakes in the past and we have paid for it...our cap seems to be looking pretty good tho.....now id time for Parcells to do something with the money we have.

    Ozzy rules!!

Joey Porter is one of our best LB's (face it). It would be costly to just dump him because some fans do not like him.

He had a knee operation in preseason and then is being asked to play Strongside OLB for the first time.

We will work to get rid of some of our worse players, not some of our best.

if you study that closely and add the numbers asuming we get all the dead money clear, we will have roughly 45 mill under the cap and thats not including any cuts or trades so we will have plenty of money, we dont have many high priced players, jt,zt, porter,rb are the only players making big money, muller has done a good job with the cap imo. expect 2 big free agents but no samuel or briggs, imo parcells will not waste a ton on big name FA

45 million???? and thats not including cutting or trading people??? darn, it could be even MORE.

if we have around the 45-50 million range....dude, we should bring in everyone! lol.

i think 45 million is enough to sign Trufant, Asomugha, Briggs, Suggs, maybe even Haynesworth. obviously those 5 additions would officially make our defense #1....

but this isnt Madden 08, i gotta stop dreaming..

if we have 30 mill to spend we can easily, so eaisly go after, Asaomugha, Lilja, Faneca, Haynes will be Tagged, Briggs has agreed to terms with teh bears already, Suggs I dono I rather get Ghoulston now n spend that tho elsewehre or just save it. Thats 2 Top G's, 1 Top CB, and the rest on Solid players to fill in holes. n draft the rest.

Don't get excited yet. That list is all wrong anyways.

There are also things like incentives that get added at the end of the year (remember when Gus cost the team a bunch of cash cause they won 9 games). I think it's safe to say the team will have around $22 million to spend on resigning our own (people always forget this) and free agents.

Don't forget we have Rex Hadnot as a Free Agent, Carey is due for an extension also which could be costly.

    45-50$ million? Well... no.

We still have about $10M of dead money just from Chambers and Culpepper.

Peter King's estimation is that we'll be about $26M under the cap next year.

will allen and jt were the most solid players on D this year and i think if we could sign a big time #1 cb, then allen could be an unbelievable #2
