Should we take a rb? I think even with the wr struggles we stil have a strong core... If not rb then what is our biggest need other than o line... TE?
I don't think we can(or in general should) say that "X" is our #1 priority, or Y our "#2" and assign resources in that method. If this coaching staff is here, we shouldn't be spending a 2nd round pick on a running-back to share snaps with Lamar Miller. They don't run the ball enough for that to be a good use of resources, IMO. With another coaching staff, sure, I think it should be a consideration.
It comes down to what's available. I don't think the RB position requires early draft picks. There are always guys like Bobby Rainey that can be found later in the draft or in FA. But if a talent like say an Eddie Lacy falls to your pick, then it makes sense b/c you increase your odds of finding a gem. I have a higher opinion of DT than most here. I see him as a functional committee back that's good enough all-around and has a a cheap price tag. But I also see him as easily upgradeable and he is generally poor at short yardage. We really don't have a player with great or even good vision for short yardage runs. DT was good there against SD, but he's been poor in that area throughout his career. Clay has been effective as a short yardage back on occasion, but likewise, I can't say he's anything I feel comfortable with as a short yardage solution going forward.
I'd like to say 2 of our top 3 picks should be O-Lineman, but hopefully we have a shotcaller at that point that doesn't burn 3rd rounders on guys who can't crack the 8-deep rotation...
Tackle should be #1 but we shouldn't draft another lineman til after the 3rd, I still think rb and te should be #2, n #3
Btw yes I'm talkin draft... Whi thinks we are sb contenders? I been thinking draft since last draft...
That idea doesn't come close to justifying it. They're averaging a respectable 4.1 yards per carry, and there have been enough examples of early success put on the shelf for no apparent reason it could absolutely be better. If we were Baltimore or Jacksonville, maybe.
Impossible to say until free agency, people were going nuts to get a WR with the first pick last year, after free agency it didn't matter anymore. Maybe we fix the o-line in free agency?
So you expected Super Bowl at the beginning of the offseason? 2nd year Qb, 2nd year head coach, right now whatever has happened in the past, doesn't matter to me at this point and time, they have everything right in front of them, they control it, so for me personally, I don't focus on the offseason when the team has a chance to improve in their 2nd year, and that's what I wanted this last offseason.. As far as your topic, I'm always in the hunt for that badass running back..Eddie Lacy would of been a fine choice last year, he or Keenan Allen would of been nice.
Realistically we should probably try as hard as possible to trade down out of the first round to grab as many young offensive linemen as we can this draft. We are actually still in decent cap shape so we can plug a couple holes via FA as well.
I think the free agency thing is worth consideration, because there are loads of guys whom I think would work good as shared-workload players with upside: I think it might be easier to grab one of those guys and pair them with Lamar Miller and Daniel Thomas than draft someone.
Don't get me wrong, I'm personally not against spending picks on a runningback. If you can find an Adrian Peterson or LaDainian Tomlinson, by all means.
I think we need to spend at least another draft pick on an RB and we might need to take one early depending on how the draft plays out. I don't think we have an every down back on the roster now.
Nor do most teams these days, and that's ok. You don't need a 25-30 touch guy in today's NFL. A committee is often cheaper and equally as effective.
depending what happens with starks and soliai re signing we may need help at DT early in the draft!!??
I think the whole "identity" thing is a load of crap anyway. Your "identity" should be to play good football in all phases and win games. THAT is an identity.
disagree rock, certain players can give you it. Identity- leadership-toughness- charisma... It's all the same to me.
Forcing yourself to take a particular position, especially in the early rounds, can be a recipe for disaster. In a perfect scenario, value meets need and you go from there. I think in Round 1 we may be fortunate in that there looks to be a good number of offensive linemen who are thought to be of 1st round quality so we might be in good shape there. But I wouldn't pidgeonhole yourself into saying we should take a RB (or any particular position) in round 2. They should let their draft board, with considerations to need, inform their choice. Also, history has shown you can find RB's late in the draft or elsewhere. For example, Chicago may release Michael Bush after this season. Perhaps he might be the type of big back that might fill a need and be relatively inexpensive.
Well, when I think of identity I think of how you run your team. Run heavy, pass heavy, blitz heavy, etc. Leadership and toughness I absolutely agree are important, so if you want to call that an identity then fine by me.
Fine!!. The identity of the team wil be formed thru the identity of the players brought in..if you believe you have identified the player that has that unique leadership ability and toughness, you build around that player to fuel his personal identity..know what I'm sayin?..lol
I got you deej. I'm just saying that usually when people talk about a team's identity they are referring to their style of play. But I'm all for an identity of leadership and toughness.
I'm not sure I'm able to communicate my thoughts well enough on this..of course, who wouldn't want an identity of leadership and toughness, however, when it comes in the package of middle linebacker, your talking about building the team around that player right?
Yes, you can build your team around a few guys. Nothing wrong with that. Regarding my previous argument: For instance, the Jets "identity" is known as a running team with a great D-Line. My point is that that sort of "identity" is something I never believed in. Your team should be balanced in all areas. Depending on your opponent, you'll have to have different game plans and ways to attack. If you can't pass the ball and you're playing a team that shuts down the run, then you're screwed. That's what I was referring to. I don't want the Dolphins to be a team that can only be really good in a few areas. I want a Dolphins team that can excel in all areas and be able to attack an opponents weaknesses successfully.
yeah were talking about two different things...my identity comes from one player who can change the dynamics of a locker room, and inspire others to become their best, I think their rare, but if you can identify the player that has it, then get him..
The guy that yelled out linebacker got my vote.. I actually forgot about that, I'd actually grab the best one I can find 1st or 2nd round and now looking at the fa rb's I can see us getting Thomas replacement, although I'm not sure they are ready to give up on him or miller for that matter.. I guess a rt and some guards are jes as good as drafting a rb...
It's all got to be prospect-driven. I look at what Giovani Bernard is doing for the Cincinnati Bengals and I don't see this closed-mindedness to the idea of grabbing a guy you think is too talented to pass up. Yes you absolutely CAN get tailbacks later on. But WILL you? It's not like you get 10 cracks at the bat in one off season to make sure you've got the guy you need there. If you miss, you miss and it can have a tremendous impact on you. No position (aside from center) touches the ball more than the quarterback and primary running back. So for example if I get a crack at a Melvin Gordon in the 2nd round...I've got to think pretty goddamn long and hard before I say, nah...I'll be fine with an Andre Williams or Zurlon Tipton in the 7th round. I'm sure as hell not going to reject the idea sight-unseen because I think I've reinvented the wheel on what is the perfect philosophy for running a football team. Just looking around at the talents I would say that some players that strike me as being a consideration in that round could be RB Melvin Gordon, RB Lache Seastrunk, RB Tre Mason, TE Troy Niklas, TE Jace Amaro, TE Eric Ebron, WR Marquise Lee, WR Donte Moncrief, OT Billy Turner, OT Taylor Lewan, OT Cameron Erving, OT JaWuan James, OG Cyril Richardson, OG Gabe Jackson, DT Aaron Donald, DT Will Sutton, DT DeAndre Coleman and DT Timmy Jernigan.
Adding onto some of these lists, guys I like 2nd round are: Carlos Hyde - RB - Ohio State Brandin Cooks - WR - Oregon State Stephon Tuitt - DE - Notre Dame (doubt he lasts until round 2) Shayne Skov - ILB - Stanford A.J. Johnson - ILB - Tennessee Justin Gilbert - CB - Oklahoma State
Forgot about Stephon Tuitt. That guy can play, though I have to look more into him. Cooks is also a good shout.
We'll see how good Tuitt is without Louis Nix in the middle. I read that Nix had to have or will have surgery on his meniscus and is done for the year. I wonder if that means he'll stay in South Bend for another year. If he came out, I'd consider Nix, heavily (pun intended) if Miami doesn't re-sign Soliai.
Let's also not forget that Green Bay took Eddie Lacy in the 2nd round this past year and then took Jonathan Franklin in the 3rd or 4th round.
