With Christmasfast approaching we are getting close to another off-season. As we stand rightnow we are 5-5 still alive but with a loss this week and the Pats, Jet's 2x,Bills, and resurgent Steelers if we lose more than 2 games the rest of the wayout we are going to miss the playoffs yet again. Plain and simple that isunacceptable with the money spent, plethora of draft picks, and cohesive staff. So, with that being said let’s pretend we miss the playoffs what are us as fanswanting for in changes to this organization. Now, I don't mean so manyspecifics as in certain players, coaches, hires but more or less the type ofchanges you'd like to see. Really want to see a discussion of the fits inschemes, philosophies, and organization we are hoping to see.

One thing we canagree on is a new GM. We’ve been stuck with this S.O.B for 5 years and withonly the first one being a success. A few things I am looking for in a GM thatI’d like to see us change.

    1. An upand coming GM. Someone who has served in a successful FO for a reasonableamount of years. There have been some very successful first time GM’s over thepast years and the reason is the environment they come from. Look at teams likethe Pats, Packers, SF, Seahawks, and Ravens as teams with solid prospects forGM’s.

    2. A manwith a plan. Ireland has always lauded that we will build through the draft.Well, we spent the most money in FA this year than we have in years. Why?Smells like desperation to me. Jeff see’s the ticking clock and he was fueledwith money and picks. Did he overspend? Absolutely. I want someone who is goingto cultivate a system. Look at the Packers they very rarely spend big on FA’sand if they do it is usually their own. They focus on developing and draftingplayers. If FA is an option it’s for scheme fits not for reaching for thestars. Figure it like this is a GM has 7 picks each year and he finds starterswith 3 to 4 of them. Within three years you should be looking at 11-12starters. That is successful and even if they are not starters as long as theyare contributors.

    3. Someonewith Charisma and Personality. Ireland just seems like a “D Bag”. There is noaspect to him that is charming or with personality. When you have current andformer players bash him as one of the Worst GM’s in Football. Sorry, but whennumerous players are saying that it’s probably true.

    4. Relayingback to a Man with a Plan. I want our GM to have control. If we finally get ridof Ireland, the next person brought in should have his choice of staff andpersonnel. If that means blowing up the staff (a good thing) and getting rid ofsome of our roster… so be it. Be a lot worse to have him trying to make awinner with a staff and roster not of his choosing then it would to take aseason or two to get his plan in place.

Next thing isbased of the GM. But, plain and simple have him bring in a Head Coach of hischoosing with who he has a relationship with. It’s not a real difficult scienceif you look at successful organization as it usually stems from a positiverelationship from Owner to GM to Coach to Staff to Players. So, with the GMdeciding what are some things I want in a Head Coach.

    1. AHead Coach who has been a Head Coach before at some level. This marks thesecond straight Head Coach who has not been a Head Coach at this level andmaybe any tangible level. Now, as Chip Kelly has shown so far sometimes Collegecoaches can make the transition. But, plain and simple I want someone who hasled men. Philbin is a high character guy and I do believe that but he isn’t aleader. He is almost awkward with his speeches, press conferences, and whatnot. He seems programmed. Mike Tomlin is a coach to me who just fits the mold(sad cause we passed him up for Sparano). But, he demands respect and speaksthe truth. The fact Philbin defended Turner yesterday saying “He has done agood job,” is such b.s. Now I don’t want our HC throwing people under the busbut be truthful as the O-Line’s performance has been historically bad… it’s thefacts.

    2. Acoach who has specialized as a coordinator, one that has called plays. Philbinwhile being the OC in Green Bay never called the plays. It was McCarthy’s babythat Philbin babysat and changed the diapers. My biggest thing is if Philbin isthis offensive guru then why hasn’t he overruled Sherman to change the schemesand plays on offense cause it ain’t exactly lighting up the scoreboard. Sparanowas a O-Line coach, Philbin was a O-Line coach. Sorry, but the NFL is beingruled by Offensive Minded Guru’s. Give me a Sean Payton offensive mind or aRob/Rex Ryan defensive schemed coach. Those are guys who worked their way up ascoordinators to be known as some of the best scheme coaches in the game. Ireally don’t care if it’s an offensive or defensive minded coach, as long asthey understand schemes, personnel packages, and situational football I will befine.

    3. Acoach who plain and simply understands coaching. You play one game a week. Thatis 6 days to prepare. But, it doesn’t stop there you have a 1[SUP]st[/SUP], 2[SUP]nd[/SUP],3[SUP]rd[/SUP], and 4[SUP]th[/SUP] quarter of football and heck maybe OT. Thatis 6 full days plus 4 possibly 5 quarters of preparations, schemes, andadjustments. When was the last time you could say that a Dolphins teamconsistently from week to week comes out in a game fired and up and looks readyto play? Anyone? Well, that’s an issue I have. The Bills game this year comingoff a bye against their backup QB and with us starting 3-0 then losing 2 in arow. How in the hell do you not come up fired up and prepared. That’s on thecoaches. But, additionally it’s the fact that we aren’t making necessaryhalftime adjustments as seen the next week in NE. We dominate the first half byrunning the ball and leading 17-3. Then what do you do in the second half…. Bailon the game plan. Run the ball I believe like 7 or 9 times in the 2[SUP]nd[/SUP]half and end up losing 27-17. These are the things that consistently have beenhappening and while Philbin isn’t calling the plays or schemes he is doingnothing to stop it. We identify issues and it takes this staff 3 to 4 weeks tomake the changes. Unacceptable. Another thing is I feel Philbin is too loyal tohis staff. Plain and simple if that unit isn’t producing or getting better holdthat coach accountable. The HC is only successful from his staff and they cancost you a job. So, do yourself a favor and give those incapable of coachingthe pinkslip before you get one yourself.

    4. Acoach who his players will follow into any battle. I look at the Saints and howbad they looked last year. What’s changed? Sean Payton is back and they are atthe top of the NFC. They play with a chip on their shoulder and they get thatfrom their coach. Nothing from this scandal this season as demonstrated by theplay on the field leads me to believe that our 53 man roster would followPhilbin into battle. But, with that comes a coach who understands his playersand the struggles they go through.

    5. A manwith a plan who follows that plan. Funny when Philbin got here it was we wantto be a high speed spread offense. We want our WR’s to play X,Y, and Z positions. We want to practice faster than anyone so that we aren’t tired in the 4[SUP]th[/SUP]quarter. Well, Joe you haven’t really followed through on those promises. It’sfunny cause when we got hurry up in the 2 minute drill is when we are mostsuccessful. Yet, we don’t stick with it. We signed a $60 million speedster toonly line him up split wide right 99% of the game. Why not move Wallace aroundcreate mismatches. I remember Peter King saying that he had never seen such afast pace practice as he did in Training Camp 2012. Well, King may have beennice but despite our practices I still see us having to rotate Wake out in the4[SUP]th[/SUP] quarter. Where is our conditioning? Now I know I seem picky withthis one as plans can change. But, even when these things are successful ourcoach isn’t sticking with them. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it and if it broke don’twait to fix it.

With a GM and hishandpicked coach now comes to the staff. I look at our current staff and more thanlikely a new coach means his own people but there truly are 3 coaches I wouldn’tmind being kept around. Those are Dan Campbell our TE coach, as the work he hasdone with that group after Keller went down with injury is simply amazing. After watching him on hard knocks he is a motivator but also a good communicator.Special Teams coach Darren Rizzi, this unit has been pretty consistent since hehas taken over; he always seems prepared and gets his unit fired up. Last isKacy Rogers, who has been a stalwart here for a few years. While I have beenmore disappointed with our D-Line than in past years, I really think ourcoordinator stunts what he could do with his unit. Still, he is regarded as oneof the best in the business. So, with that being said I will focus on some ofthe coordinators and staff I’d like brought in.
    1. Anoffensive coordinator that isn’t offensive. Mike Sherman is god awful. I forone was like nice were getting a former NFL HC as a OC who is bringing his QBwith him from college can you say match made in heaven. How wrong I was.Sherman seems like a likeable guy and is regarded well in NFL circles but whenyou hear frustration from the offense on his play calling and the fact he doesn’tunderstand Football 101. My biggest things with him are he seems like he doesn’thave a weekly plan and when he does he is too quick to abandon it. Our runninggame has struggled all year but some game we will have success then willabandon it. Yes, if we are playing catch up I understand but if the game isstill in the balance then keep your team balanced. The 3-1 and 3-2 play callswith stretch plays and pass plays, are so pathetic its sad. We have a 6-4 QBwho is an athlete; we have Charles Clay who used to be a FB and is a bruiser. Thencomes the Mike Wallace effect. Why wouldn’t you use a weapon on an offense thathasn’t produced big plays? Now I am not talking just run Wallace on deep routesbut for god’s sake can we move him around and get the ball in his hands withspace. Lamar Miller has produced some pretty big runs but has yet to get morethan 15 carries in a game. Yet, he remains so loyal Daniel Thomas and it’sinfuriating.

    2. An OCwho is an innovator. Look at what some of these offenses have been doing thepast couple of years. Denver, SF, and NO to name a few. You see these guys playinto their QB’s strengths and mask their offenses flaws. Look at KC this yearAlex Smith is by no means a superior talent but their OC understands what heexcels at and where he is limited. With Sherman even despite spending 6 yearstogether doesn’t. Tannehill’s strengths are his mobility, throwing on the move, and his arm strength. His weakness are his pocket awareness, accuracy, andstaring down defenders. Not to mention our O-Line has been terrible. So whathas Sherman done to play to his strength and remedy the weakness….well notmuch. More recently he has done some play actions and roll out plays but notnearly enough (big reason is our abandonment of the run game). You watch him inthe pocket and it’s like they’ve programmed him to be a pocket passer but why?The dude ran a 4.5 and is built. I’m not saying make him an RGIII or Vick butfor god sake’s if he has room to run coach him to pick up a first down. Toomany times he has passed up an opportunity to run for yards to force a throw ormiss a throw. Arm strength is much more superior throwing to his left. Yet, weline up Wallace on the right? Get a clue. Pocket awareness plays into our lineplay which is bad but for god sake teach him to extend a play or move up in thepocket, and when the game is on the line a throw away is much better than asack. Staring down defenders and accuracy come hand in hand with coachingfootwork, and preparation. All these things are simple fixes by bringing in agood coach. And if that doesn’t work then you know you don’t have the right QB.But, bring in a OC who understands play calling, personnel packages, andadjustments. We don’t need a overly experienced coordinator but we do need abright mind who comes from a good system.

    3. Coylewho I believed last year was on his way to becoming a great DC has taken a hugestep back. One thing I believe is a problem is we have brought in playersthrough FA and the Draft that aren’t a fit for his schemes. See why it’s soimportant to have a cohesive FO and Staff. It’s like Ireland shopped forgroceries without taking in mind what Coyle was planning to cook for dinner. But, from a scheme prospective he just doesn’t seem to get it. Those fake A-Gapblitzes by Ellerbe and Wheeler are maddening. Once an intelligent QB sees thathe knows to check off to a RB or a quick screen to burn us. I have never seen aDolphin defense give up so many 3 and 10+ as I have seen through 10 games thisyear. A big problem with Coyle is he is unwilling to branch off from hisbeloved 4-3. Why wouldn’t we at least use a hybrid. Try a 3-4 look out of theblue with Vernon, Jordan, and Wake all on the field. What we need is aD-Coordinator willing to adapt and make changes. But, first and foremostidentify from his personnel what scheme will fit best. Look at our defense. Wehave 3 great DT’s. But, they can’t all play on the field at the same time in a4-3, what should he do? Well in a 3-4 in which all of them have played theycould all be on the field at the same time without jeopardizing our pass rushoptions. We drafted a #3 overall OLB/DE in Dion Jordan. Yet, we are unwillingto give him the proper opportunities to make a difference.

    4. Finda DC who lets the difference makers play. I am a big proponent of practice likeyou play. But, truth be told there are a lot of players who really perform whenthat first kickoff comes on Sunday. So, here we are 5-5 with a defense that hasgotten worse in the two years since Coyle has been here. There have been somechanges with 2 new LB’s and 2 CB’s but nothing so drastic you’d say anoverhaul. Realistically, Coyle has a lot of leftovers from the previous regime’splayers. Those players weren’t good enough then yet there still seeing thefield. Olivier Vernon is my first victim. While he has played much better thisyear he is an obvious liability in the run game. Look at SD they ran to theirleft on us all day. Why? Cause Vernon can’t set the edge. And it’s obvious whenthere are successfully picking up 5 to 6 yards a pop. Yet, Jordan who is asuperior talent is listed as not strong enough in the run game. But, every timehe is on the field makes a play or is around the ball. Linebacker is a mess allthe way through but big thing for me is how in the hell does Trusnik be ourfirst LB off the bench. Love the way the dude plays ST but he has no realvaluable skill to be a LB. You drafted a 4[SUP]th[/SUP] round guy who wasregarded as a good coverage guy. Now let’s get to the secondary. We draftedback to back CB’s in round 2 and 3. One has maybe 4 or 5 appearance that othermaybe is lucky to be active once this year. Yet, we play Nolan Carroll andJimmy Wilson (two former regimes picks). Both are awful plain and simple.Weekly you see them get picked on by smart QB’s. Why aren’t we giving therookies a chance? If the answer is they are ready to play that falls oncoaching. Yes, they both battled injuries through pre-season but here we are inWeek 12 and neither can make a difference. Find a coordinator who plays themost talented and best players. Don’t stay loyal to players who work hard inpractice yet can’t make plays in a game.

    5. Finda staff that can cultivate and develop players. Referring to my questions abovethe defense is a big worry for me. We invested a lot of picks into that unitthis offseason and only one is making impact in a very limited role. Why isthat? And please don’t believe they are not good enough. Every defensive pickwas regarded as a good college player who has NFL potential. Jordan was the secondcoming of Aldon Smith. Jamar Taylor was an All-Conference player and some hadhim in the 1[SUP]st[/SUP] round. Will Davis was known as a ball hawk and was aleader in the FBS in interceptions. Jelani Jenkins was a #1 high school playerand a very good linebacker at Florida but struggled with injuries. Even Don Jones our 7[SUP]th[/SUP] rounder wasregarded as a talented safety/cb prospect from a smaller school. My main thinkis whoever the CB coach is should be shot on sight. If you have a 2[SUP]nd[/SUP]and 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] CB who are not in a regular rotation of CB’s especially withthe injuries and lack of depth we have is a travesty. With that being said therookie class as a whole is a dud. Let’s go to offense. Our O-Line has beendownright putrid all year. We drafted a OL in the 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] round who wasan All-SEC guard. Yet, we have been adamant to make him a tackle even after hewas embarrassed and whipped on all preseason. It’s one thing to not developplayers it’s a completely different thing to try to fit a square peg into around whole. Pretty sure we could always use good guard play but hey let’sbring up a practice squad player and play him over a 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] roundinvestment. If he isn’t ready? That’s coaching. If he isn’t a good player? That’sthe GM. either way those are should be held accountable. Rishad Matthews a guywho performed decently with the opportunity last year. This year he didn’tsniff the field til Gibson got injured. Since then he has made plays. Where washe for the first 7 or 8 games? Oh, that’s right we want to be a GB type offensewith only 3 receivers who regularly play. Look at the Patriots they will shifta whole personnel grouping in at WR/TE/RB on given plays. Like I mean 5 or 6 guyswho are fresh subbing in. Why is that? Cause they develop their backups to bereliable like there starters. We do not. That my main point find positioncoaches who can develop the players. By my count I can honestly say we have twothat I’ve seen improvement from their units from year 1 to 2.

With all that the personnel changes will come. I can’t sit here andspeculate who will go or who will stay. That will all be determined by thechanges from top to bottom. My biggest thing is to make sure we find the rightplayers for whatever plan and scheme our staff has in place. If we want to be abalanced team then solidly the O-Line and find a compliment to Miller. If wewant to be passing first teams then give Tannehill a clean pocket and a quantityof weapons that are used creatively. On defense if you want to stay 4-3 thenfind LB’s who can play in space and are physical. If we move to a 3-4 then useyour blitzing options creatively and get them on the field at one time.

The biggest thing this rest on is Mr. Ross. Do I believe he wants a winner?Yes, I do as the guy wouldn’t invest the time, effort, and money he has. But,those things are all good and well still if you don’t identify an issue withyour organization your dead in the water. It’s evident we need changes. Thefirst is at GM. Ireland has overstayed his welcome and nothing he has done fromhis drafting to spending in FA to the way he treats his players gives him areason he should stay. Now with that being said Mr. Ross learn from yourmistakes. Three years ago you coveted a coach that garnered national mediaattention all the while you still had a head coach in place….Not a good way todo business. Then after you missed out on your prized coach you went back tothe current one with a “vote of confidence”….mhmmm sure you do. The followingseason we fire the staff but keep the GM that came with them? Why? No clue. Butyet again you chase a coach only to be left with nothing to settle on a coachwho has no prior experience or familiarity with our current GM and hope itworks. Well, it isn’t. The point is Mr. Ross has made billions on businessdeals but not by being in the business of sport. Just like anything you needcohesion and familiarity with those running your organization. I like the committeehe has brought together in Dungy, Taylor, Martin, Shula and Marino. The reasonis all have had success at the NFL level. You have former players, coaches, andexecutives who know what it takes to play and win in the NFL. I really would likeus to put a VP of Football Operations in place so that we can take back the prideSo. Florida used to have for its Dolphins. Not sure if Jason Taylor qualifiesyet for that job but he is the type of person that the community, and fan baserespect and that is a very good start. Look what John Elway has done for theBroncos by completely changing their culture and vide in three short seasons. Now he isn’t making all the personnel decisions cause as he has stated he isn’tthat type of guy. He just knows football and what makes a team successful fromthe team to the fans. The biggest mistake Ross can make is to fire the GM andinsist on keeping the staff. We did the half house clean two years ago and herewe are two short seasons later with the same issues we had before. Learn fromyour mistakes Mr. Ross and give South Florida the winner they deserve and havelonged for.

Let me know your thoughts guys on some of the changes you’d like to see andwhat you expect.

There are so many inaccuracies in this post that I don't know where to start, so I will just address a few things.

    1. You don't hire someone just because they came from a "well run" organization. You hire someone because of his ideas and what his plan is for when he gets the chance to run his own team. Just because you come from a well run organization doesn't mean you will be able to duplicate it. See Scott Pioli, failed KC Chiefs GM. See George Kokonis, failed Cleveland Browns GM from Baltimore.

    2. You aren't going to find a coach that is going to single out an assistant and state that he isn't doing a good job in public. That stuff happens behind closed doors.

    3. There are very few things that translate from being a coordinator to being a head coach. That's two different job descriptions. If anything, a special teams coach probably has more of a broad view of the team than an offensive or defensive coordinator has. This idea that a head coach has to be a coordinator before he becomes a head coach is the standard thinking that goes on in the NFL, and we have seen so many idea that were standard proven to be false when we look at the numbers. The most important quality of a head coach is his ability to communicate and relate to his players. The #1 thing a head coach has to do is get his players to buy into his philosophy/system. Play calling has absolutely nothing to do with that. In fact, I would venture to guess that most of your coordinators that become head coaches are very rigid in the scheme they want to run, as they will hire someone that has similar ideas and philosophies to their's.

    4. I continue to be amazed at the comments about how bad Nolan Carroll and Jimmy Wilson are. Among corners that have played more than 50% of his team's snaps, Nolan Carroll is currently 26th in the NFL in opposing QB Rating on throws in his direction. QBs have a 77.5 QBR on throws targeted at Nolan Carroll. If you change the filter to 25%, Jimmy Wilson suddenly shows up at #21 with a 70.4 QBR on throws targeted to him. Nolan Carroll is 35th with the 25% filter. The bottom line is these two players are playing a lot better than fans will give them credit for playing, because fans tend to have preconceived notions about certain players. Nolan and Jimmy have been bad in the past, so they will never be good. This is why we have numbers, because this is a perfect example of people seeing what they want to see and ignoring the numbers which obviously shows that their preconceived notion is WRONG.

Now, what I do agree with is that this team needs to reorganize the structure of the front office. They need one person to have all the power on the football side of the operations, whether they create a President of Football Operations position or bring in a strong GM as an Executive Vice President/General Manager. This person needs to be media savvy and have a good public face, because this is the guy that will be the point man for getting stadium renovations done, possibly a new stadium, as well as running the football operations. I'm not sure Tom Garfinkle as the President and CEO can get out there to the public and convince them that public funds for stadium renovation or a new stadium helps everyone. Now, someone like Jason Taylor or Dan Marino will probably be able to have that connection with the public to get things moving on this.

Once again, if John Elway can do the job, there is no reason to think Dan Marino can't. Dan may not have been the most cerebral quarterback in the league, but neither was John. Let's not forget that John Elway also had a lot of help during his first two years on the job before taking over the personnel role himself.

My first thought, zwave, is that that was a great, thorough inventory of where this franchise is at and I heartily agree with everything you said. Which is rare on here. lol.

BUT (there's always a but) I think a lot of people won't read through everything you wrote because in a lot of places the words are jammed together without spaces between themlikethis. That is SUCH a shame because not only did you clearly put a lot of time and effort into this, but I truly believe in your viewpoint and it's worth hearing. I hope you'll take the time to edit the post and make it easier for others to read so they can also benefit from your point of view.

    Now, to discuss particulars:

    1) I absolutely agree with your approach of saying that is a very talented draft pick on a weak unit, like the OL or CB units, is not seeing the field at this point then either the GM screwed up in drafting a player without the talent or a poor fit for the system OR the coaches have failed to coach the player up and get them ready to play by now. Will Davis, Jamar Taylor, Dallas Thomas... they can't crack very weak lineups to make it on the field... seriously? Sometimes I wonder if they aren't pawns in a coaches VS GM war where the coaches WANT Ireland gone? It seriously boggles my mind. I am of the mindset that the coaching staff is making poor decisions about half of the time (as mentioned above) and some great ones with guys like Charles Clay, whom I wanted to cut in training camp (whoops! lol.)

    2) Everything you are saying about which position coaches to keep and which to let go, I agree with. We DEFINITELY need a QB guru in here though. Not a guy just out of college who is married to Sherman's daughter.

    3) Coach Cadaver, imo, is not a great leader. He is steady in the face of challenge, so that's good, but he is also a dead-faced avoider of problems, imo and when drama DOES happen he averts his eyes or robotically says the right things without having the interpersonal skills or gumption to get in there and deal with men. The only time he is fiery that *I* can see is after wins. how about when the team needs a lift? Not when the battle is over, but when it's outcome still hangs, undecided, in the balance. A passive headcoach is not what I am looking for. Give me Jim Mora over Tony Dungy every day of the week.

    4) Everything you said about Sherman and his poor choices, poor use of Wallace, cleaving to DT's nut sack, and general inflexibility in fitting his playcalling to the players he HAS instead of the other way around is totally true, imo. Also agree on it hindering Tannehill's performance by not playing to his best abilities.

    5) Thank you for having one thread that does not spend time on Martin-Incognito's Brokeback Mountain drama.

    6) So what do I want? Well, if Ross can *entirely* remove himself from the process (like his only involvement with the Dolphins is his yearly meeting with his own accountant when he reads the P&L statement) then I could handle Ross as an owner. I personally think he's a buffoon and would prefer another owner. Other than that, I agree that a fresh GM and fresh coaching staff could help. Or it could just as likely set us back. The odds of any new GM or staff winning at a high rate aren't high to begin with. If you get a veteran coach, I worry whether he has a fire in his belly. For example, I don't think Cowher, or other guys who took time away from the game to be around family and already have a SB ring are gonna have the drive to win another one. I do NOT want to bring an old HC out of retirement or media. No thanks. However, others have mentioned Jim Mora. Not a bad possibility. I think you want a guy who, like Bill Belichick, has had HC experience and you have a GOOD reason for why he failed at that... so Belichick in Cleveland.. well, it was Cleveland, for one, and second his talent sucked at QB. But you DO NOT want a formerly fired HC like Wade Phillips who has been fired because he straight up sucks. It's not that he's a bum, it's that he's NOT Bum (phillips, that is!). In terms of co-ordinators, I agree with your approach though do not know particular co ordinators well enough to comment. People often mention some college innovators who sound interesting. I would love Rex Ryan as our D.C. if he got fired and was willing to do it but that's wishful thinking and unlikely in the wake of us trying to clean up a PR nightmare as Rex brings his own potential issues there. GM... yes. Can him. Please. I wanted Marc Ross from the Giants last year, actually.

    In all, great post, brother.

They are not the same people and are pretty much nothing alike. I don't think Elway would be particularly worth a crap on CBS while Marino is fine.

First thing the team needs to do is catch up with the rest of the league in terms of public subsidization.

I'm getting tired of losing.. That being said, seems like every year we want to tear this team apart and start new... Now I can't really make a case to save this staff but I believe joe can get us back n the right track.. I do agree Ireland must go.. He has failed to build this team by bringing in terrible leaders and soft players who don't fight to win games... Every draft has been terrible.. Now I see a lot of ppl make a case for dion Jordan but the fact is he came from a team that was always blowing out their opponents.. So his ability looks great but when you can jes do your thang and use raw talent on every play of course your numbers will be good.. Now he is being tested by real talent opposite him and his weakness are being exposed.. Poor pick by Ireland, drafting based on Mel kipers board instead of drafting what this team truly needs.. He is not a scout.... Jamar Taylor another player that looked good because he was never really tested, now he can't even get on the field... Switching out our lbs was probably the worst move he made, dansby was good against the run, he should have been kept, never revamp your defensive leaders unless you are rebuilding, not if you are trying to win now.. Looking forward I think Jordan and Taylor can contribute, as well as ellerby and wheeler but they are rebuilding pieces, young and energetic and have room to grow with a young team.. Joe is doing a good job getting the guys to play solid penalty free football, I don't blame him for the locker room drama, I blame the leaders on this team as well as Ireland for putting them in place.. So to answer your question what I would like to change, nothing... Bring in a new gm that's really it, let joe, sherm, and Kevin get one more year to work with this rebuilt team...

Loving the feedback guys. Always interested in seeing what other fans think the remedy to this situation we have going on. Sorry, about the length and the grammatical stuff trying to convert from word to the template doesn't seem to be working out for me lol.

To answer KB21: not sure which inaccuracies you are referring too as it wasn't a thesis more or less a matter of personal opinion from a die hard fan. But let's address it.

    1. I completely agree with you in the fact you don't just hire someone from what organization you come from. But, let me ask you do you think quality GM's are grown on trees? They have to get their start from somewhere and look at the successful ones they have a Family Tree of GM's that span off from them. If you hire someone for their ideas and planning it doesn't just come off the top of their head it would more than likely be something learned. And the truth is coming from a successful environment doesn't predict success but it sure gives me a lot more faith in that individual. Throwing out Scott Pioli and George Konkonis is irrelevant as those are two GM's who came from the gold standard of well run franchises and walking into quite a mess. Research a man named Ted Thompson and see the lineage of GM's and Front office Personnel that he has worked with and have become successful on their own.

    2. Never said he should single out an assistant but please don't patronize the fan base by stating he has done a "good job." Be honest it is a work in progress and lately we are seeing some progress. The bigger issue is that Philbin seems like a puppet controlled by this Upper Management during his press conferences. As a fan base I expect transparency and honesty from those running our team. That should be expected of every fan and if it isn't you don't live and die with your team each Sunday.

    3. "There are very few things that translate from being a coordinator to being a head coach." Not going to lie this made me laugh. The fact that you don't believe coordinators translate to becoming a head coach is kind of perplexing. The reason being is I have never heard of a D-Line coach becoming a head coach in the course of an offseason. You have to work you way through the ranks to get to that status and that usually means you've been a OC, DC or ST coordinator. But, I do completely agree with you on the communication and relating to players as that is something I believe Philbin really struggles with (at least from what I have seen). Still, the fact that you wouldn't want a coordinator scares me. I hope you are not confusing what I am saying as I am not open to a previously tenured Head Coach cause that wasn't what I was implying. I just believe we need a coach who has experience at one point or another as a coordinator responsible for his unit and calling plays.

    4. Please don't give me the analytics and stats of either Wilson or Carroll. Watch with your eyes on the field do they look like quality starters? Come on, Carroll get whooped week in and out. Stats get inflated by counting Carroll's missed interception as a pass breakup and what not. But I do agree most of us believe since they've been poor quality they will stay that way, because they have improved. My bigger issue is we wasted a 2nd and 3rd round pick that can't unseat either one of them.

But, I do highly agree with you on the fan base and getting someone in Front Office who has earned the trust of this fan base. Marino I believe is living pretty fine with his weekly CBS gig. Taylor on the other hand has yet to take broadcasting by storm and I think he is in a period of his life where he isn't sure where his fit is in life after football. Why not come home JT to a nice cushy Front Office gig around your favorite love.

To Bpk: Appreciate the feedback Brotha! Always insightful stuff when I get your response to some of my venting. Sorry, but sometimes with this team you get writing and you look up and are like Wow, that was a lot.

    1. I have to agree with the mutiny scenario cause I have wondered the same team. It's like Ireland's picks and signings are ok'd with the staff first or vice versa. They just don't seem on the same page. Almost seems weird to me 4 of the 5 members from last year's counsel were shown the door without any ho-hum from Philbin and Co. But, as Philbin and the staff have no real allegiance to Ireland it really isn't that far fetched to believe it could be possible. Still, I feel like our coaches are just inept and too loyal to some of players who plain and simple are that good.

    2. Yes, a QB guru would be great. Any idea's on who you'd like to see? I was watching the Panthers and their playcalling and just how much more developed Cam Newton looked and was like who are his coaches. And wouldn't you know its too familiar names with Mike Shula as the OC and Ken Dorsey as QB coach. Now that's what I like to see a smart former QB like Dorsey. I know of another smart QB who may be interested in a full-time role Mr. Chad Pennington. I have always thought Chad was destined to become a successful coach as some level. He is familiar with Tannehill as he helped out this past offseason so it's wouldn't be a first time introduction. Shula is also a name that could be a HC possibility. I know he struggled at Alabama but remember he struggled with sanctions and still kept that team somewhat relevant. He is a solid offensive and QB minded coach.

    3. So on point with you there. As a former player I hated the uninspired coaches. If I mess up... get on my case about it. When I do something good.. get me pumped up about it. Philbin couldn't be farther from a coach like that. I love how fired up the Harbaugh's, Pete Carroll, and Rex Ryan type coaches get. I love that they believe in their team and have a swagger about them that emulates to their players. I saw someone post earlier they wanted a Front Office including Bill Polian, his son and Tony Dungy, and I vomited on my desk. Why would you want a dinosaur for a GM, and his son who missed on just about every pick and signing he had. And a coach who was infamous for having the personality of a rock. I'll take the brashness and cockiness of Rex Ryan than the passive even-keeled demeanor of Tony Dungy.

    5. I am so over that drama that I can't wait to be rid of both players. But, please dear god do no just cut Martin at leas get something in return. Their are enough OL hungry teams that we could at least get a Mid to Late pick. We just need to find a team with enough veteran presence to stand up for the pansy.

    6. I agree I wish Ross was more spoken than seen. But, I doubt that will be the case as it's his business and he is all about business. That's why I think putting a VP type in the Front Office like Elway does in Denver would help dividends. He could keep Ross in check as politely as possible. After seeing Ross' reaction after the Tampa game and how he looked at JT and kind of changed his expression JT might be closer to him than we anticipate. Agree, with a new GM and staff it may take a learning curve, but the reason we need to start over is there is no improvement being made on a week to week basis. This isn't just about the wins and loss columns, its about us learning from our mistakes and how it takes us to long to identify and fix them. Still with you on a veteran coach or retired coach. It's funny how people forget the NFL evolves so quickly. Cowher hasn't coached in years and when he did it was a much more different league. Pretty sure the running game was the "IT" thing with him. Gruden is the only coach I would consider out of the media and that is because he is a film guru and is always studying new tendencies and schemes. Plus, his QB camps are excellent to watch and for some reason I think his personality and fire would drive Tannehill to be a more fiery and better player. He'd fix his mental mistakes and give him the chance to succeed in what best suits him. I am very wary of first time HC and College HC trying to make the jump from our past failures. Still, I see a couple College HC who have prior NFL experience who seem more suited for the jump (David Shaw, Jim Mora, etc). Agree with you on the type of former HC we should target. Find someone who got the short end of the stick due to talent, money, or what the previous regime left him with. Jack Del Rio has been mentioned recently and I can't say I hate it. He kept that team relative for a number of years. Also if you didn't know the Jags have more playoff wins that us the past decade and that came at him at the helm. Ken Whisenhunt is another name that comes to mind. He has done a pretty good job in SD this year despite injuries that team has dealt with. Arizona was competitive and even in a Super Bowl with him. He suffered due to a poor defense, lack of a consistent running game, and no QB when Warner retired. Yeah the coordinator discussion is tough as it really falls down to who the Head Coach is and who he knows. I would love Rex Ryan too but he has done one heck of a job for the Jets this year. That defense is downright nasty and the fact they are tied with us at 5-5 isn't because of talent its cause of coaching and getting his team to believe in winning. If only his brother would cut his hair I would even look at him for a HC would love to see a Ryan v. Ryan battle 2x a season. I just want coordinators who are innovative and consistently preparing and scheming for our playmakers and against our weekly opponents.

I continue to laugh at those who continue to state Dion Jordan was a bad pick. Dion Jordan is an example of why this coaching staff needs to go. The guy makes an impact. Against San Diego, he pressures Rivers on 3rd down that has him rushing a throw that barely gets to the LOS. Then, he pressures him and forces a pass that Jimmy Wilson picks off. Against Atlanta, he forced the interception to Jimmy Wilson that sealed that game. He also had a very key stop on a goal line play in that game. Against SD, he had 14 pass rush snaps and 2 hurries.

I think Jordan has the potential to be a great pick. Kind of sad our coaches just don't see it. The kid makes an impact every game whether is rushing the passer, chasing down a ball carrier or covering a Tight End. Kid is way too dynamic and productive to not be given more responsibility. Fact of the matter is we truly don't know how good or bad this draft class is cause our staff refuses to give them a fair shot or has them playing the wrong role.

I know all about Ted Thompson's tree and his two branches right now. I've stated as much in other threads. However, these guys are good because they are good. Not because they have identified this great philosophy and can implement it everywhere they go.

What I want is a guy like Phil Emery at Chicago. He came from Kansas City and is a person that respects the scouting aspect of the game while also embracing advanced analytics as an aid to help him make better decisions. He is also the model of transparency when it comes to the media. Now, Phil Emery would have never been found if you only wanted to look at those programs with the reputation for being a strong staff.

    http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/9531195/bill-barnwell-phil-emery-general-manager-philosophy

What I want in the next GM is detailed in that article. I want someone that will treat the fans like they actually know something about the game rather than coming off with an air of arrogance, defiance, and smugness like Jeff Ireland does. I want someone that will stick to the process of team building and not abandon the process to go into self preservation mode. I want a GM that will not fear the unknown, such as the budding market of advanced analytics, and I want someone that will think outside the box on some of his decisions, including hiring an analytics staff to help him make decisions.

I would be shocked, though perhaps pleasantly, if a complete house cleaning occurred. I think someone probably survives, and maybe more. I figure Aponte survives. It would be terribly disappointing to retain Ireland. I am not sure about Philbin. I am actually kind of indifferent to it. However, I am not indifferent to changes on his staff. So in summary, I could deal with some coaching changes and an adios to Ireland at minimum.

I know you mentioned coaching staff without specifically mentioning Philbin. I do know that in other threads you, like many others here, are advocating getting rid of Philbin. The logical progression is usually the same...player x or player y is not being used properly or the team appears to come out flat or we lost game x that we should have won.

I've recently said that, regardless of any one trait, the coaching staff - and Philbin in particular - needs to be judged on the totality of the situation like wins and losses. Although we would not be happy with 8-8 it would signify progress over last season.

Look at history. Walsh was 6-10 in his second season with the 9ers and Johnson was 7-9 in his second season with the Cowboys. It's crazy to think that with either record our fanbase would demand Philbin's removal after his second season. Regardless of finish, I believe we need that 3rd season to truly see what the progression is with Philbin and Tannehill.

Given the circumstances, I think we really need someone who does a better job of communicating when the cameras are on him. There are a lot of things I like about Joe Philbin, but the one thing I'm not sure about is his interpersonal skills. I happen to think that is one of the main traits a head coach needs. Sometimes people that are extremely intelligent have terrible interpersonal skills and have trouble communicating their thoughts without sounding programmed.

It really is a catch 22. We have done the half way thing before. We took Dave's GM title away from him but kept him as head coach. Then we fired Tony but kept Jeff. When you make a change at GM, the problem that we could face is that we end up saddling a new GM with a lame duck head coach. So, then we end up wasting another year. With that said, look at Ron Rivera this year. Carolina made a change at the GM spot but kept him. He came into the season on the hot seat. Now, his team looks like the best in the NFC. New York did the same thing with keeping Rex. They have been up and down but are competing for a playoff spot when everyone thought they would be competing for Teddy Bridgewater. I think the Jets are close to the point that the cracks are starting to show, and it wouldn't surprise me to see them bottom out the rest of the way and Rex ultimately get fired. Cleveland made the change a few years ago and kept Mangini, and there was talk that Mangini was keeping them from hiring the personnel executive they wanted.

Don't worry, no one is getting fired.

Any thread that has to be prefaced with "missing the playoffs" when we're tied for the last spot and have two games vs the one team ahead of us pretty much speaks for itself.

Oh no doubt that Philbin can be better in front of the camera and I think you are touching on what the core issue is with the fanbase...they want to feel good about the team and not be such a punchline in the media. In fact I think Fin fans are quietly desperate for recognition. And we think dumping the current regime is the best way to get into the good graces of the national media et al and get some positive recognition for once.

You would think that based on our national publicity that we are a walking trainwreck of a team. Ireland is an average GM because he's built a 5-5 roster. Philbin is an average coach because he commandeers a 5-5 team. They are not the disasters the media and fanbase has made them out to be. You would think we were 1-9 with the way this team is portrayed.

Jeff Ireland will be fired even if the team makes the playoffs. He has not done a good job of putting together a roster and managing that roster. He saddled his new head coach with players that does not fit what he wants to do on the field. Joe Philbin may not get fired, but Jeff will not be retained. He has presided over three black eyes for this organization now, and at this point, it is as much a business decision as it is anything. He is currently the most hated figure in Miami Dolphins history with this fan base, and fans are about to start speaking with their pocket books. Stephen Ross knows this, and that one year extension that Jeff got this season will be about as good as the one year extension Tony Sparano got in 2011.

Jeff's gone, but I think it is very possible that Joe Philbin may actually gain some personnel power and have a hand in hiring the next general manager barring anything coming out of this investigation about him knowing about the things going on.

Keith - if Ireland is fired, I see Philbin becoming the patriarch of the Organization. For better or worse. In fact, I see little change coming with Gaine taking over as GM.

I don't see the house-cleaning that some are expecting. Let's say we finish 8-8 with this Martin/Incognito albatross hanging over our heads and Philbin is fired. What message does that send to the next coach? You can improve the record and I'll speak with absolute reverence about you but then I'll fire your a**. If I'm a coach of any substance I would never take the job because the exact same thing could happen to me.

As for the investigation, don't expect much of anything to come from it. First, the clear outlier in this situation is Martin and the last thing the NFL is going to do is open Pandora's Box where every failed NFL player will have a ready-made harassment suit.

Mike Wallace, the entire offensive line with the exception of Mike Pouncey, no quality pass blocker at running back, linebackers that cannot cover......etc.

You hired a head coach that runs a timing based, pass first offense, and you spend big money on a receiver that runs poor routes and is limited in the routes he can run. You don't spend money to improve the OL, opting to stick with the slow footed Jonathan Martin and then sign the slow footed Tyson Clabo. You spend big money on a linebacker that we knew from his days in Baltimore couldn't cover when your coach wants a defense that can stop the pass.

I mean, honestly a case could be made that it is a miracle that the team is 5-5 at this point.

Couldn't agree with you more Emery is the new breed. And I love his transparency. But, please don't tell me you believe Good GM's are born? I mean those guys under Thompson got good cause of his philosophy, plans, and the identity he instilled during his tenure. Not saying his disciples need to be carbon copy but they use those tactics and philosophies where they go. Building through the draft is the best formula for consistent success and we desperately need that.
