Kevin Coyle was praising his ability to cover the tight end and offer more versatility to the defense. Also said Jordan needs more snaps overall. Maybe I'll finally get my wish of having Wake, Vernon and Jordan all on the field together.
His head was up his ***, maybe it was hard to hear what everyone was saying. Even for the least tight of butt holes (looking your way Sick) an entire adult human head would have to be a tight fit.
Please be assured that I have no compromising pictures of Coyle from his tenure here in Cincinnati. I was pretty geeked when he had Dion Jordan lined up where Koa Misi normally lines up in the base packages a few times yesterday. That was what I wanted from the beginning, and IMO, that lineup would allow for Jared Odrick to be on the field with Soliai and Starks to help stop the run. Having those three in front of Ellerbe and Wheeler would do a lot for this defense and it allows you to use Vernon as a rotational player. Unfortunately, there's no depth behind those three guys. Alas, I'm still dreaming.
Sounds good to me, he blanketed gates the times he was assigned, would also like to see more reps at that middle backer position.
I do think he's hurt. He's playing less, and he doesn't have that lean he used to use on slower tackles. Seems to be more of an effort strength guy right now. Maybe thats why he was so winded towards the end.
Different formations and packages. Derrick Shelby and OV have seemed to settle into roles and have turned into good contributors in those situations. Derrick Shelby looks like he's become more of a quality take-on run defender, and he's getting rotated in for Wake sometimes and lined up tighter to linemen, more along the lines like Odrick was last year. OV looks like more of an edge rusher, and sometimes when Wake and OV are one the field at the same time the offensive alignment means that one or the other is lined up tighter than they usually should be.
Did Dion Jordan in practice actually end up covering Gates? It seems like every time he lined up opposite him in space there was an audible into a run, and PFF only has him with one coverage snap.
I have to say this too, Pandarilla started a thread about putting Jordan on Gronkowski and most of us didn't take it seriously, but it seems like Jordan can cover tight ends after all. So, good job outta you, Panda. You weirdo.
You have no clue what's really going on. You know, Coyle being so vocal in the media about him being set on limiting Jordan's snaps for the rest of the season could have been a coach trying to get his rookie's head out of his own ***. Often times, with young players, coaches set goals for them to reach... and, they won't let them play (any, more, etc) until they've reached those goals. That could easily be the case here. I wouldn't be so quick to jump to conclusions.
I did and it was pretty gratifying to see Jordan running far downfield with Gronk early in that game. Suck it naysayers.
Me too. I never agreed with the idea of making Jordan strictly a pass rushing RDE. He is too good in space and in coverage to not take advantage of that.
Why do professional football coaches resist **** for months that dudes on a forum with non-football dayjobs can see as painfully ****ing obvious within days?? Seriously.
Panda's thread that time really pissed me off, when those of us who supported the idea of Jordan being used to cover Gronk were basically laughed at. One argument against it was when had Jordan ever covered a TE of Gronk's ability. That was ridiculous, since Gronk when healthy is the best TE in the game today. So, duh, never. So what? The thing of it was though, Jordan has the physical tools to matchup and anything we tried before had not been working. Think outside the box for gawd sake. When we first drafted him the first thing I thought of, was he could neutralize Gronk, not how well he could rush the passer. Having 6' DBs or 6'2 LBs try to cover Man Mountain Gronk is a study in futility.
I think there's a lot that goes on behind the scenes that is impacting these decisions...ie. illness, strength, nagging injures, practice habits or comprehension issues. You look at the game Sherman called this past Sunday. If he was doing that all year long, there would be a lot less griping on these boards. There has to be a reason why he didn't and I doubt he'll just come out and tell us.
Because they're in profession where the entirety of their job is second guessed, constantly...without end. Few of us can imagine what that is like. In that situation, the fairly common thing to do, as an alpha male, would be to retreat into your already held beliefs and training on the matter and basically double down on what you think is right.
Make no mistake, Jordan will earn his $$ and draft status getting after the passer. Real issue is, he can cover as well, do you use him in that role to much, or do you mix it in? Would love a .gif of Dio going from DE to MLB and Rivers reaction...he freaked out
Perhaps another way to use him this coming week is to do some spying on Newton. He may have the best set of physical tools to do this too.
Exactly what I was thinking watching last night. I want Jordan on Cam all game. Grimes on Smith and stop the run
Same reason NASA uses 10 year old camera and computers. Billion dollar franchise, 16 games. Each game is so valuable.
Yup, I've stated, off his college film, that I believe that he has the type of game, size, and athleticism to define a new position in the NFL, and so far from what I've seen, I still believe that, because I've never seen a player with that type of size and physique move like that..never.. I think he could be the ultimate spy clean! lining up in the middle of the field! and just letting him showcase his remarkable range going north south east and west???this is a sideline to sideline player! this is a player that can back pedal! flip his hips and run like a deer! this is a player that was born in the athletic position, his coordination, explosive and size, makes me not understand why a coach would not want to use him exactly the way were describing..now, as much as we have been heeling at Coyle to see him thru a different lense he's actually doing the things we believe that allows him to use that skillset, we've seen him running with tight ends 40 yards down the field, I've seen bump and run coverage, I've seen him spy as that middle backer ( my favorite) and we've seen him rush... Just keep it up Coyle, give him a little bit more each week and I'll be happy.. I want to see him on early downs, and I think he should get twice as many reps this week against a phenominal athlete in newton...spy him Clean know what I'm sayin?, I mean one thing I do have confidence in is this, no matter who's on the field when we play an opponent, if Dion is on the field with them, we have the best athlete on the field..so lets go athlete on athlete baby, cause that's what newton is, an athlete playing Qb, and until Jordan refines his instincts and masters the scheme, he's the best athlete playing defense, so lets put him at a spot where we take advantage of the athleticism without sacrificing too much on the mental side..spy.
I'm so glad they might do this a week before Thanksgiving... Instead of against the Bills, Ravens, Bucs, Patriots where even the smallest adjustment might have made enough of a difference in a tight down-to-the-wire loss, where one win would porbably make a huge difference come December when we're looking back at the season saying "what If".
I just don't agree with your first statement..being an overall great football player is how he can make his money, You mix it in, mix it all in, he can do it all. You talking about that royals incomplete pass?
Because most of the times the dudes on football forums are overly simplifying or having opinions without the full picture.
