Currently, Grimes is under a 1 year 5.5 mil. dollar contract with the team.

I know we're in the middle of the playoff hunt, but what are everyone's thoughts on re-signing or franchising Grimes in the off-season?

I think we have to keep him. Let Patterson go. Coach up the rookies.

This team has enough holes to fill on the market, we cannot add CB.

He should be resigned if at all possible. Not sure how Grimes feels on coming back though.

I'd have to hope they've already approached him and are working on it, unless Ireland has been completely shut down.

Loved that he was able to bat down that Hail Mary? Does this guy have a 40 inch vertical or something?

I'd bring him back if the price isn't too steep. I think part of it might be a matter of waiting and seeing who the coaching staff ends up being. If it's Philbin & Co. then yes, bring him back. If it ends up being someone that prefers to play press man or a lot of zone, then I'd see who else is out there.

Also, for the record, free agents signed under 1 year deals cannot sign deals until free agency the next year; no in-season extensions. I know someone is bound to ask.

He will be 31 next summer. He may go looking elsewhere for his ring.

The franchise tag will be around 11 mil I think.

It will interesting to see what happens.

Uh Oh! This is going to cost a helluva a lot more than I originally thought.

Want to see something scary, look here:http://www.spotrac.com/rankings/nfl/cap-hit/cornerback/

    Yikes!

I changed my mind. There are three CB's I like in 2014. Darqueze Denard in the late 1st after a trade down. Pierre Desir in the late 3rd after a trade down. Marcus Williams in the early 7th round.

Been a long time since I go into a game confident one side of the field is practically locked down due to having a supreme corner. I love the guy, resign him!

His salary increase, if resigned, would be mostly offset by the release of Dimitri Patterson who has played well this year but refuses to stay healthy. With Jamar Taylor and Will Davis in the wings I don't see how Patterson gets resigned once this season is over. We may pick up a late-round cornerback or a project in the late rounds of the draft, or we may resign Nolan Carroll (who is too inconsistent for my taste) for depth reasons.

    This is all a prediction.

How long are we re-signing Grimes for? I'd imagine he wants a long-term. If it's a two-year contract, I can probably get on board with that, because I really like Grimes as a player. However, I don't want to pay too much and get in a bind paying in excess for a guy's twilight years (any four- or five-year deal, and I'd have to let him walk, despite really liking the guy), especially at a position like CB (or WR) where guys are running full sprints every other play.

I do think he's overcome the Achilles issue, and that wouldn't be an impediment to signing him.

Grimes and Patterson when healthy, has been one of the nest tandems in the league. DP's groin may be keeping him singable for next season. I'd love to enter 2014 with both these guys. We need a stud LB, and our safeties to play like its 2012, and we have as much as you can ask from a defense.

His body type is quick twitch, kinda like wake just smaller, I believe his athleticism will be there at 33 34 without losin to much of a step, and he's a smart corner, so extra savvy will be in play during these years, so I'd offer him a nice three year deal..

He really doesn't get phased by big moments, so unusual for a dolphin defender.

Ya, just how many pennies do really think we are talking about here??

Did you look at that list of the cap numbers for other top CB's in the league??

If Grimes stays healthy, he can legitimately ask for top 5 money.

You do realize that we are talking about cap numbers well in excess of 10 mil??

The franchise tag is looking like....what? 13 mil?

Awful lot of money, awful lot of money.

By the way. I don't get why everyone is so quick to let Patterson go. He's had a lingering groin issue which has kept him out, but he's been one of the better corners in the NFL when he's been in there. A groin injury is one of those that is hard to shake sometimes and that has certainly been the case this year. It is something that if given enough time to heal though, won't be an issue anymore. It's not something that should be any kind of worry next year.

If it were me, I would keep both Patterson and Grimes. The two of them give the Dolphins one of the best corner tandems in the NFL. It's been a long time since the Dolphins had that kind of stability in the secondary.

Grimes for me is a no brainer. He absolutely works in off man and zone coverage so as long as whoever is coaching here next year isnt playing press man that seems like a match. Id sign him to something like 3 years/22.5M(7.5M per)/12M (4M per)guaranteed.

Patterson is a different story. Scheme wise he works along the same lines but he cant stay on the field. Thats not just this year, thats over the last few years. He played a full season 1x. He played 14 games one other time. Hes a good 4th cb but hes shown he cant be relied on even though hes a good player when healthy. If he wants to come back at a salary reflective of that...something like 2 years/3-4M...Id say ok but I doubt that happens.

I havent heard anything about not being able to resign a player on a 1 year contract to an in season extension. Unless that was part of the newest CBA and I just missed it. That would seem to fly in the face of everything logical knowing that football is a game where players will jump at the money many times when its available knowing their career is a week to week proposition. It just wouldnt seem to make much sense.

The best CB we've had here since Madison and Surtain and it isn't close. Reminds me of another Zach Thomas. Undersized but his heart and athletic ability more than makes up for it.

I definately hope that we can resign Grimes. Hopefully, the two rookies can get healthy and ready to play by next September, and we'd be ok at that spot.

I think another part of it could be depending on how many other holes Miami has. I mean, they very easily could be looking at acquiring 3-4 new starters for the O-line. They're going to need to address the defensive line, primarily DT. Soliai and Starks both have expiring deals and Jared Odrick's only got one year left. I'd imagine you look at re-signing one of the two between Soliai and Starks (I'd prefer Starks) and it's likely that Jared Odrick is looking for an extension. If Jeff Ireland is no longer the GM, I would think whoever comes in, unless it's an in-house hire like Brian Giane, would look to lock him up as well as opposed to waiting until he's in-season as Miami did with Reshad Jones and Koa Misi this year.

I think you have to address both of the lines before you get to Grimes simply because Miami actually has bodies under contract at CB they can fall back on. Miami's got roughly $18.3MM to play with as of now. Unless they're able to dump some of the salaries that are currently on the books for a fairly palatable cap hit (Misi, maybe Wheeler, and some minor guys like Garner and Trusnik) they've got to be careful how they spend their money.

Samphin Κακό σκυλί ψόφο δεν έχει

I wouldn't franchise him, but a reasonable two to three year deal with the appropriate raise in pay should be discussed at the appropriate time. He has bee better than advertised out there.

Patterson has been good as well, when he is able to play. Something tells me he is gone to someone who wants to overpay him. With the rookies behind him though, I can't see Miami investing terribly heavy into D-Pat while they still have other, more pressing areas to concentrate on.

You think Aponte or someone could/should do that? Since he's already here. Sure in normal circumstances the GM would be involved, but these ain't normal circs.
