I was curious last week when TH threw the deep bomb and Wallace just watched the defender pull in an easy catch. So I watched Wallace a lot more tonight, specifically how he was covered and how he FINISHED plays. In other words, I didn't hold it against him if he got stuffed at the line...it's what he does after the fact that really matters.

So in the first quarter, TH went deep and under-threw Wallace by a good 5 yards. With better placement it was an easy TD, but Wallace did try to adjust and make the play. This has to be frustrating as hell for a speedy receiver...Tannehill hasn't hit him in stride once the entire season and we're leaving at least 14 points on the field (per game) by bad throws in these situations. A few series later, however, Tannehill slightly overthrows Wallace along the sidelines. It's hard to say for sure with the camera angles I had to watch the replay, but it looked like a catchable ball if Wallace would have laid out for it. It was most likely out of bounds or right over the line, so it would have been a good catch....but Wallace didn't even try.

It gets worse though. On most run plays, Wallace would jog 4-6 steps and then just stand there, not even trying to block or help the team. Twice the play came to his side of the field and the RB (once Thomas, once Miller) had to run around Wallace to try and turn the corner. Both times, the CB made an easy tackle while Wallace stared off into space like he was on a picnic.

When Wallace saw help from the safety (which was fairly obvious on most downs), he would run 5-10 yards and then start looking around at the field. This didn't happen on every down but from what I saw, if he didn't have a chance of getting the ball, he didn't care what happened with the play. Again, the cameras don't follow Wallace exclusively but I saw this at least 7-8 times...all on double coverage.

When Wallace was 1 on 1, he came off the ball a lot quicker and immediately went for separation. This goes back to the earlier point of Tannehill not being able to throw an accurate deep pass, but at least on these plays Wallace did put forth a solid effort (which helps out the other receivers as well). The problem was, I only saw him in definite 1:1 coverage on 5-6 total plays so it's not a frequent thing. Here's the kicker though; Wallace was open for the TD lob on almost every one of these downs. Not wide-open, smoke your guy by 10 yards....but he did have 3-5 yards of separation.

Now compare Wallace's effort to someone like Wake, who is the only other one on the team that takes home comparable paychecks. Wake goes hard every play, regardless of where the ball goes, and he's chasing down plays from behind 10-15 yards up-field. Late in the game, Wake seems to go to an entirely different level and I'd feel comfortable saying that his efforts have sealed 3 of our 5 wins this season.

So it's pretty obvious that Wallace has given up completely, and only a few well timed go-route passes can change his demeanor at this point. On one hand I don't completely blame the guy, he does want to be the star, but his paycheck dictates that he should be a guy that plays every down regardless. Maybe things will improve going forward since Tannehill finally started scrambling, but I'm not optimistic quite yet. In my opinion, Ryan looked better tonight than he has in at least 5-6 weeks, but he still has to figure out the deep ball and how to use Wallace effectively. In any case, I couldn't fathom Wallace being in Miami next season...unless we start Moore in the next few weeks and they make a connection.

He will not get all of that disgusting 60-mil contract we have heard so much about and have been so ashamed about...first chance to dump him...we will (or at least should). Unless he goes off and gets 11 more TDs in the next 6 games or something stupid like that...he is a certified bust. Just needs the stamp to finalize it.

Wallace fought hard for the ball all game. He made some tough contested catches. If Tannehill doesn't underthrow him by 10 yards it's a touchdown.

You can see he and Tannehill just don't get along. Wallace is starting to act like a Diva.....I liked the signing at first, but now it looks like a mistake.

Last two weeks rishards been the best wr on the field for us. dude runs a 4.4 and his hands have been 1000x more reliable than that ****er wallace. the huge 1st down that Tannehill fired into a tight window with about 3:30 left? No way in a million years does wallace catch that. Wasn't a problem for Mathews though.

It's a bit of both of them in my opinion but at the end of the day the bottom line is that it just isn't working. I still don't want to bench the guy, I say we keep trying to make this connection work...We got him, might as well use him.

Just like winning overcomes, Tannehill hitting him a few times and getting his numbers up would help.

Listen, Wallace's antics, his key drops, and his inability to really do much other than a 9 route is frustrating. But it's also frustrating to watch a golden boy QB never hit the guy downfield.

The inability to get the ball downfield was a big issue with Henne too.

I love Matthews, Alls I'm saying is don't expect him and Tannehill to connect on a 60 yard go route anytime, ever.

I think he feels like he is being poorly utilized within this offence. I touched on it in another thread but I do recall Ben often connecting with him deep over the middle of the field. He is so oddly fast that it's tough to get a read on him. He should be given more field to attack and make adjustments on the ball...similar to how he was utilized in Pittsburgh. Isolating him deep along the sidelines just doesn't seem to be a recipe for success.

I think this team has too much invested in him not to do everything to make it work. I think just splitting him out to the right is greatly underutilizing what he can do for his team.

So across 60+ offensive plays, Wallace made an effort on about 8 of them. If Tannehill threw one pass on the money, it's okay for Wallace to take the other 52 plays off?

    Solid logic.

I temper my frustration as I remember plays like the rope that Tannehill threw to Hartline against the Browns. The arm and the accuracy are there. First, the timing is off with Wallace and maybe it wasn't going to be perfect during their first season together. Second, we need to attack other parts of the field with Wallace. That's how it was done in Pittsburgh but we've never done it here.

We all know Wallace is a one trick pony... Fly pattern or bust.. I contested the deal from the start.. He took advantage of Miami by using the market to dictate his salary.. Bottom lne is he is a package wr... He is not nor will ever be a true #2... He will always be a deep threat, nothing more.. We over paid and that's not the dolphins fault, it is the nfpa fault.. These guys can get what they want.. Mathews will be asking for a 30 million $ contract soon... Clay will be wanting gates money, it's simple mathematics.. It has nothing to do with how you play going forward, if your a starter your intitled to a certain amount... Tann if he plays well he will be upwards to 100 mil$ contract and it has nothing to do with him... It's all on the nflpa....

If Tannehill makes that throw we've still got loads of godawful play and abject failure from Mike Wallace.

The sooner they get his *** out of there the better, both in terms of benching him for Matthews and off the roster

Tanny has played decent this year imo. Wallace has dropped his share of balls but otherwise played ok. I can get his frustration with Tannehill or just overall. Tanny hasn't hit him deep in stride once this year. Actually maybe once and I think Wallace dropped it...go figure. Wallace has good reason to be upset though. He has been labled a bust this year and I don't think he has been at all. Sure his #'s are down a bit but Sherman doesn't use him nearly as much as he should and Tanny can't hit him deep for his life. I see an easy +5 TD's for Wallace if Tanny could make the deep passes his missed. Wallace has proven he can run other routes and be used differently yet we hardly make it an emphasis to do so. Like I said he has dropped some balls but he has done his share as well. A handful of plays separate him from having a great season so far as opposed to his current mediocrity.

I can understand how his frustration could affect his effort at times. Does it justify his lack of effort? No, not by any mean but I can't understand it at the same time. I would make it an emphasis to practice deeps routes over and over again between him and Tannehill. I just don't get how Tanny is always under throwing!! He has the arm....yet can't get the ball there deep. If anything under throwing the ball is 10 times worse than overthrowing it. Why is he constantly coming up short?? I just don't get it...

There are things that RM can do on the football field that Wallace cant that is for sure... and vis versa...

As a Dolphins fan I am glad to have Wallace on the field. The guy provides the Fins with something they have not had in forever... a guy that can get open deep. Now, if we can just get Tannehill to get him the damn ball.

Last, year I blamed Tannehills inability to connect with Hartline deep on Hartline's inability to shift into that last gear. This year Tannehill has prove me wrong... it is 100% on Tannehill... the guy just doesnt have a clue where to throw the ball on deep patterns.

I am by no means saying Wallace hasnt brought some of the critizism he get on himself... but really to label him a bust here is just nuts... Really, what it comes down to is Tannehill just cant get him the ball and if he could Wallaces numbers would be totally different and we wouldnt be talking about his issues.

    This is 90% Tannehill's problem.

No doubt Tannehill should have made that throw, it was actually a terrible pass but I can't be the only one thinking that Wallace still has to catch that. It hit him right in the arms, he is getting paid $60M to catch the ball even if the pass isn't perfect.

His "effort" or running plays is atrocious, he just refuses to block anyone.

dont know what play you are talking about but the under throw i am thinking was deflected by the db. fact of the matter is that Tannehill needs to get him the ball and has failed time and time again.

This will be my first ever post where I bash Tannehill a little bit. But the guy had time to step up in the pocket and still underthrew Wallace's speed, again. The guy needs to learn to not throw it to Wallace, but throw it well ahead of him. At this point, we know Wallace can't fight for the ball, so I'd rather overthrow him and give him a shot to catch up to it. We know for a fact that if Wallace has to slow down and get back into traffic that it's over.

This offense is about pin point route running. That is why all year Tannehill and Wallace have not been on the same page. Wallace isn't ending up where the ball should be, and throws like that get picked off. Tannehill has no trust in the guy and for good reason, he's not going to fight for you. He has shown that again and again.

5 yards behind the defense is where Wallace belongs, it is not his fault Tannehill cant get him the freaking ball... how anyone could defend Tannehills inability to throw the deep ball in just beyond me...

last year I spent the entire season apologizing for Tannehills inability to hit Hartline down the field.

Why do people keep saying this? The guy weighs like 100 pounds. He isn't going to out muscle anyone on a deep ball. He isn't Calvin Johnson. The deep underthrown passes are 100% on Tannehill.

I would like to know how consistent Mike is running his patters speed wise. Start of the season Tanny was over throwing him now he is under throwing him. Could the effort Mike gives each week in practice be a contributing factor to these two not hooking up? If the pattern requires a constant speed each and every time and Mike is up and down with his speed between practice and the game that would make Tanny look bad. Just an idea.

Mike Wallace's best weapon is his ability to catch the deep ball in stride.

Ryan Tannehill's big weakness is his inability to hit the deep ball in stride.

    It's not a good combination.

Ben Roethlisberger didn't have a problem with it.

Mike Wallace has proved for several years that he is an elite deep threat.

On the other hand, Ryan Tannehill has never had an accurate deep ball.

Seriously, it's like there's Stockholm or battered wife syndrome going on up in here.

Ryan Tannehill isn't the reason why Mike Wallace has been awful. Mike Wallace running routes poorly, leading the league in dropped passes, and not having any timing off his release is why Mike Wallace has been awful.

A better deep passing game would help, but it's lipstick on a pig. Even at that point, you're paying loads of money for a ****ty version of Ted Ginn Jr. or Donte Stallworth.
