I don't know what the real answer is yet this much I do know. If Reshard makes that call and everyone else on the defense is supposed to follow his lead on that call...he sure did a horrible job communicating it to the other people in the secondary. Horrible time and place to have such a major mis-communication
Which means, at best, Reshad Jones did not communicate the play to Grimes. And at worst, he freelanced on a key play in the game.
That may help actually and help clear this all up. No need to argue with one another or accusations. Lets see what actually happened.
I would think Jones main concern would have been to pass that information over to Grimes. You could just see the double take on Grimes
still can't figure out why he didn't cut to the left he would of scored , he cut right back into traffic and we saw what happened.
If that's a Cover 1 then why was Grimes blitzing from the get go? If Jones audibled out to this "flip" or "B side" then what was the coverage out of interest regarding who had the WR because Grimes obviously didn't get the signal which as you say was on Jones to call. #30 for the Bengals was in protection. You say the way the D-Line was set up that it wouldnt work without Jones blitzing. Wake stunted into the A Gap. #30 wasnt protecting any A gap rush. You are right about Jones occupying the #30 as Wheeler took on the Tackle. My gripe is why Grimes didn't get the call. It didn't look smart. The communication was late and Grimes pulled out in mid blitz to cover which by then was too late. It was a messy play. The only thing that was very smart was the way Cameron Wake saved that from being a disaster if Dalton had checked his progressions and saw that wide open Bengal. It was a messy play in its execution and communication.
I was waiting for Miller to cut left and head for the M of the MIAMI logo in the endzone, instead he ran behind 2 redundant blockers and had the ball tomahawked out on a good hustle play by a Bengal defender. That's one that Miller will kick himself for when he sees it back on tape.
In reflection I agree with this. We were all confused as it was happening on the field in real time as Jones, Grimes, and Clemmons all look confused and the announcers even called them a such. Later I realized what a smart play it was, even if it was a screw up. So, whether by design or not, by Jones occupying the additional blocker by blitzing, he made damn sure that someone else would be singled up. Good chance that Wake doesn't get that clean shot on Dalton for the safety if that doesn't happen.
Thats what I asked as well. Why did Grimes blitz as well? Was the "plan" to let Jones just go free and have Clemons pick him up? That doesn't make sense. Grimes even points to himself to Jones right before the snap.
Thats not true at all. The RB was not going to go near Wake even if Jones didnt blitz. If Jones didnt blitz, Grimes was going to. So I don't see how anyone is crowning Jones in this instance.
Dunno how you can say what the back was, or wasn't, going to do if someone hadn't blitzed. The guy was occupied either way. Otherwise he does what, stands back and does nothing while Wake knifes thru?
He was going to pick up Grimes blitzing. Why would he go all the way to the A gap and pick up Wake and leave an unaccounted blitzer on the outside?
That's not what I was saying... I was saying that if neither Jones nor Grimes blitzed... I'd rather Jones blitz and think he made the correct call to do so. He is bad in coverage and brings more height, weight, and strength than Grimes.
just trying to point out the difference between him and Dansby/Burnett... no way either of them gets that far back on a drop in coverage to even get their hands on the deflection. Side issue on Ellerbe... man he needs a bigger helmet. That facemask is way to close to his face.
that's a great angle because you see Clemons covering that crossing route. i hadn't seen that from the sideline angle, but he was jumping it and probably would have tackled the receiver short of the first down like you say.
This is a great angle. Great endzone fan view. But with the mis communication on that play I see now why so many 3rd and longs are converted on us.
I just plain disagree with this. Dansby got that deep in his coverage frequently. Sometimes he lined up in a position that might more accurately be deemed a safety position than a linebacker position.
