JOE PHILBIN As usual, no great pearls of insight from the head coach or any shred of visible disappointment or anger about the four-game losing streak. Among Philbin’s musings: “I have a lot of faith in our guys. I believe in them.” Asked why the team went away from the running game in the second half, Philbin said: “I don’t know that we went totally away from the run.” The Dolphins had 21 carries in the first half, 9 in the second half. Philbin blamed the defense’s problem on “missed tackles here and there” and the fact on “a couple occasions, our gap integrity wasn’t what it needed to be.” On Mike Wallace: “I like what Mike’s done. To get the ball thrown with distance down the field requires precision by the route running and the quarterback and a certain amount of time to get the ball down the field. I would love to have more lengthy touchdown passes and I’m confident we’ll get more out of them as the season unfolds. Things take time.” Read more here: http://miamiherald.typepad.com/spor...-discuss-dislike-for-bulls.html#storylink=cpy
Such a load of crap.. This is all coach speak Im not sure why they have presser's if your never going to get real answers. For once I would like the Coach to come out and say you know what we called a bad second half, our players made some mistakes and that cost us the game.
he's a rock, he's been a rock. He's not too high after a win and not too low after a loss. Funny... BB sounds even more monotone in his press conferences. Don't hear anyone complaining about him being a HC and that he should return to being a DC... well, when he first started head coaching perhaps back with the Browns.
It's a must win on Thursday, they get that win, then they can justify that they didn't panic and are ready to take on the 2nd half of the season..and a new season it will be starting in Tampa.
Philbin is boring, monotone and insincere- not that he means bad, but I hardly believe a word coming out of his mouth- kind of like when he dumped Chad Johnson on Hard Knocks. Speaking of which, Johnson would probably outplay Mike Wallace this year.
oh so this is what you guys want from Philbin... presenting coach Joe EPhilbin Q: What is up with Mike Pouncey, big national story out here, are you going to comment on it, what's his status with the team? A: Well it looks like Mike is getting ****ed by the Massachusetts police. To be approached after a loss... talk about kicking us while we are down. Q: How do you explain the difference between first and second half yesterday, what's happening? A: It doesn't help that Mike Sherman has pictures of me when I was a child in his safe deposit box. There's nothing I can do. My hands are tied with him as the OC. Q: How come Dion Jordan isn't playing more? A: Well, he's a rookie. I can't put rookies out there that fast unless they play on offensive line. Then they start. Unless you are Dallas Thomas and just flat out suck beyond repair. Dion has made plays... impact plays. But we have to save him for the playoffs. Don't want him to get hurt again. Q: But you won't even make the playoffs at this rate? A: How dare you? Q: The penalty calls yesterday and questionable non calls, what can you say about them? A: If Goodell wasn't listening right now, I'd say they were flat out bull **** calls... BULL **** Calls. But I can't say that because I'll be fined and money doesn't grow on trees, unless you are Mike Wallace. Q: Speaking of Wallace, how do you devise a play to get him the ball deep? A: Well, it's a lot of moving parts out there, qb's need time, got to be accurate, receiver has to run a good route. Sherman has to forget he is no longer at Texas A & M afraid to be sacked by their AD. Everything has to come together. Q: How do you replace a player the caliber of Brandon Gibson? A: You don't, we are in big trouble. If I were Tannehill, I'd fake an injury.
When Philbin wins three SB's and wins the AFC East division 10 out of 11 years, I'm sure he will be treated just like Belichick. Until then, a 10-13 record over the last year and seven games doesn't merit Philbin the same regard from the fans that Belichick has earned in New England. Fair or not, that's just the way it is.
the point is, you can sound like a robot in a press conference... it doesn't mean **** about how you control or coach your football team. Has anyone ever heard BB during a practice? Has anyone ever heard Philbin?
They went up there last year and beat the Bengals in their stadium. This is suppose to be a better and more talented Dolphin team. So there is absolutely no excuses for them to lose to the Bengals this Thursday on their home field. A win Thursday is an absolute must or this season will basically be over as far as the playoffs is concerned. The only thing that will matter if they lose Thursday is, where will they select in the 2014 draft and who will be the new GM making those selections.
He's boring and he lacks charisma . Some sugar coating in a news conference after a bad loss is to be expected but Philbin takes it too far, almost in joke territory. He seems like a nice enough guy, just not a charismatic leader type.
Personally I don't care how a coach sounds on or off the field. All I care about is the results on the field. Belichick had poor results on the field as the HC of the Browns and he was fired because of these results. He has had great results with the Patriots and therefore he is seen as a great HC. Philbin's results so far remind us of the results Belichick had with the Browns and not with the Patriots. I believe he deserves the right to see how the rest of this season plays out, but anything below a 9-7 season this year would have to put him on the hot seat as this teams HC beyond this season. Especially if Ireland is fired and a new GM is hired for next season.
I actually disagree... there are subtleties to how he carries himself. Am I the only one that caught his response to Gibson being hurt? He got a little choked up there.
You can tell how frustrated Philbin is because he's completely clammed up to the press. When he's loose, he tends to be very honest and explanatory, and there's always good content in what he's saying. Right about now, there's nothing. And some of the answers seem almost explicit untruths.
It's something that has gone a bit under the radar, but Michael Egnew has quietly turned into a pretty good blocker, and at fullback no less. Which like Sherman was mentioning (I think) with the Ostrich comments, is kind of strange for a 6'5" guy, especially one who was basically a giant slot receiver in college.
You missed one. Q: After a 3-4 start, do you think your team has a chance at the playoffs? A: Playoffs?! You kidding me? Playoffs?! Don't talk about playoffs! I just wish we could win a game! ...Another game!
BB is sometimes illuminating in his PCs. Philbin saying he doesn't think they went away from the run game in the 2nd half reminds me of a certain fella telling the world there were no troops in Baghdad.
yeah I just assumed he meant long legs/high center of gravity. Though there could be a double meaning there with Eggnog putting his head in the sand as a rookie. Who knows lol.
Or, Omar: Coach, things looked pretty bad out there in the 2nd half as things began to unravel. A: You guys really don't know when it's good or bad, when it comes right down to it. I promise you right now, you don't know when it's good or bad, you really don't know, because you don't know what we're trying to do, you guys don't look at the films, you don't know what happened. You really don't know, you think you know, but you don't know...and you never will. Ok? Just for your own...information. Sometimes I can tell ya it won't be good and you see it won't be good. sometimes you'll think it's good, and it isn't any good. Sometimes you may think it's bad and it was pretty darned good. Sometimes you may think it's bad and it was bad. But basically, you really don't know. The only people that really know are our coaches. And that goes with run blocking, pass defense, all those things. The media, the public doesn't know, you guys don't know, not really, no.
Adam Beasley and Philbin had a little bit of a heated exchange during the presser and I have to say that it was kinda cool to see Philbin remain calm while he was getting grilled by Beasley.
There's a little bit of Jim Mora in there. maybe...someone did a techno remix version of this.. .will have to find it.
yeah this is one of the greatest things of all time.
yeah from what I've seen he's got a strong initial pop to him, keeps his big frame low, and has the balance and technique to stay on blocks. I thought he was an integral part of our run success yesterday. Plus what helps is I think he takes some real joy in winning these blocking matchups and planting a defender on his *** or driving him out of the play. Seems more than just going through the motions; seems like there's some passion to it with the mean streak he blocks with. I'm guessing the MMA stuff helped in this regard. Perhaps it created a mindset that winning a block is akin to an MMA match.
That's what I took from it, that he was scared and hid from confrontation initially. Calling him an ostrich is pretty harsh, but then saying he's overcome his natural inclination by stepping up, playing at fullback and pulling off some nice blocks is giving him high praise. Egnew stood out for me in the Pats game, I thought he had his best game as a Dolphin. I can recall at least two blocks that sprung Miller for bigger gains, and he had the one catch that went for a first down. If Sherman is impressed by him and is then inclined to get him more involved in the passing game we could have a decent player there after all.
I think the thing with Belichek vs Philbin is that Belichek has a history of making adjustments and kicking peoples *** and motivating them to succeed. I think "coach speak" with Philbin is all he's really got... Ho hum, slow and steady.
that is because it is Groundhog day and we have went over the cliff , we jumped off the ledge and we stood in front of a moving van so yes sir it s exactly like Groundhog day . only difference is Philbin is not a weatherman .
That's not what he meant. “A couple weeks ago we didn’t have a fullback and we were kind of one dimensional,” Sherman said. “The further your hips are from the ground, the tougher it is to play fullback in my mind. Mike’s like an ostrich type of guy. You don’t see many ostrich’s playing fullback. Literally, his hips are that high off the ground, but that son of a gun has become a tough guy. He’s like shot out of a cannon. He made some really, really good blocks in the game.” http://www.miamidolphins.com/news/a...s-Praise/c3fc2c4f-9821-424f-bfdc-dcfe6d94c557
