Seriously with this melodrama? Is it Ireland's fault that we're 3-2 right now and not 4-1? The product on the field was more than capable of beating Baltimore, even with our defense riddled with injury. We should have one loss at the moment, to the undefeated Saints.

Just curious, but what has Brian Gaine's job title/description been as it pertains to names on this list?

Pounced and inginto are the only two we should keep on the oline the rest should be gutted and than they can tell us we need to be patient again while they gel for 2 more years. It's always the same here

The only consistent is Ireland being here throughout. He's the problem.

Stretch play, or sneaks? It doesn't matter, if you can't pick up inches on multiple occasions you have an execution/talent problem.

Gaine was promoted from lead pro scout to assistant GM before the 2012 season. So he was responsible for the scouting reports on free agents up until about August 2012. That's not to say he wrote them all or that he handed out the contracts, just that he was ultimately responsible for the reports.

We can basically say that Brian Gaine highlighted guys like Jake Grove, and that his boss--whoever we've retroactively decided his boss was at the time, whether his name started with a P or an I--pulled the trigger on those free agents.

After Ross/Ireland went out and spent something like 90 million dollars on players in the off-season you're going to ask if they're being cheap?

I asked. No one says I don't regret asking.

    LOL.

I actually forgot that cap space rolls over. I thought we lost the $19 mill space if we didn't spend it, which is what bugged me. Also, I needed a scapegoat to roast and eat with tzatziki.

Welcome to Ross trying to be Jeffrey Loria, its what it sounds like to me. God, to have ONE Loria in town is bad enough, but 2 ? :pity:

Except it's not. The one year deal stops Ireland from being a lame duck GM. It's not a real extension by any means. There's nothing holding back Ross from firing him, if he chooses to do so.

Martin is no better this year then he was last year. In fact I would say that he is a worse LT than he was a RT and he was only mediocre as a RT. Just because Thomas is still on the roster doesn't mean that he is any good or will ever develop as an NFL offensive lineman. Ireland has drafted two decent offensive linemen in his six years as this teams GM. Long in 2008 and Pouncey a few years ago. Other than these two players, Ireland has never drafted an offensive lineman which has been anything more than mediocre at best.

I don't expect Martin or Thomas to ever be anything but mediocre or worse as offensive linemen for the Dolphins. History clearly shows that Ireland just doesn't know much when it comes to drafting quality offensive linemen. Long was a can't miss as the first pick in the draft and Parcells wanted him over Matt Ryan. Based on all his other offensive linemen picks over the years, you have to conclude that he was merely lucky with the Pouncey pick. Because he certainly hasn't had any other luck with all his other OL picks over the past six years.

What I recall from Hard Knocks was that Steinbach was Philbin's guy and Ireland deferred to him on signing him. The argument can be made that Ireland should have said "No F*ing Way", but it was an example of him deferring to the experience and expertise of the HC and OLC (be that as it may...)

Not necessarily aimed at you - but it's funny that a large portion of the fan base STILL thinks Ireland makes decisions in a vacuum without any input from others, even with there is video evidence (HK) to the contrary... it's like they literally think he consults a magic 8 ball for each decision and doesn't listen to the coaches.

That's one hell of a straw man.

The argument is that Ireland has ultimate responsibility for the personnel because it's literally written into his contract that he has final say on personnel decisions. Doesn't matter if someone is "his guy" or not--he has final say on the roster and therefore bears responsibility for its membership. The coaches can say they want someone, but it's up to the GM to decide to offer a contract.

A vocal artist always wants to make their music their way, they think because they can sing or rap, they can produce the music just as well...big mistake when they get their own way, it's why you have the producer on the track..

If it was a charity signing for a 1st year coach, I guess I could forgive him, but if he signed off on the guy after the evaluation, I question what he's doing in that dept.

I don't have a problem w/ that. They bring a guy in to check him out, kick the tires, and realize the guy doesn't have it anymore. I'd be curious to know how many days out of the year that they are working guys out like Marvin Austin for example.

Just what I was going to mention. From an ability standpoint, Fiedler was definitely good enough to win with. He was not very durable though. Even the year he did get us a playoff win, he was playing with his left shoulder in a harness. Had he remained healthy in 2002/03, I firmly believe the team makes the playoffs both years and probably wins a playoff game or two at least.
I also think Wannstedt should have had a better contingency plan, given it was already known that Jay was prone to getting dinged up and missing some games or playing at less than full strength. Spielman knew it and was trying to trade for Matt Hasselbeck, but had to clear it through Wanny, who hemmed and hawed long enough for the Seahawks to swoop in and pull the trigger on a trade.

First of all the earlier post regarding Spielman and Jay Fiedler is wrong. Fiedler was Wannstedt's pet and he takes all the credit or blame for that one. At one time in the early 2000s Wanntsedt was asked why he didn't make an effort to get Trent Green when Green was available? This was prior to Green's concussion problems and prior to Greens 4000 yard seasons and his 90+ rating for 4 straight years. Wannstedt's answer was, "What can Trent Green do that Jay Fiedler can't?" Yea we finally got Green but after his severe concussion in 2006 and he was never the same player.

Honestly, I just don't trust Ireland and his judgment any more regarding offensive linemen. Seems to me that after his attempts to build a line for several years we would have more than two reliable offensive linemen. It seems like the line has gotten progressively worse rather than better.

"Too cheap" is entirely way too ambiguous, but IMO its very clear that there is an internal cap for the Dolphins. The team's financial condition is one of the worst in the league.

Everyone is going to say that the cap space can be carried over. How many years has that been said now? At what point will the Dolphins use all the money available to them?

The team gets the same amount of money from national TV contracts that the other 31 teams get.

Anyone who defends Jay Fiedler know very little about the Quarterbacking position in the NFL. If Jay Fiedler was healthy he wouldn't have gotten us JACK, which is exactly what he got us JACK. and he was healthy, he was just that BAD.

I think the talk of trading for Branden Albert might've been more smoke screen than anything as I do believe we were gonna go after Dion Jordan the whole time...BUT...Branden Albert is a FA at the end of this year. Perhaps they are giving Jonathan Martin this year to prove his worth at LT, and if he fails he goes to the right side and we sign Albert. I'd much prefer that to drafting a guy in the first giving this regimes scouting of O-linemen..

I get the logic. Thing is, the only linemen we DO assess well are first rounders.

Jake Long was great until injuries deteriorated him.

Pouncey is top three at his position.

If we can get a guy at that level, that's great.

On the topic good article in the sun Sentinel today, had we moved up to number three and taken an offensive lineman, this board would've erupted like a volcano and in the first 11 pics I believe there were eight OL taken so the pickings were slim had we not moved up for OL.

There hasn't been a lack of spending money or draft picks on the Oline, the moves just haven't panned out for the most part. I don't see anything to indicate we are trying to be cheap. The left over salary cap space isn't an issue, we don't have a 20 million dollar Qb and we have a lot of young players so that space is needed when extensions start being handed out. A team that is young and rebuilding should have cap space.

    Thanks, I was aware
What I meant was all the good OL were gone by 12 where we would have drafted had we not moved up to get Dion, and had we moved up & taken OL I think there would have been a meltdown on this board.

We have no idea what is in his current contract. Its impossible for him to have ultimate say, because he doesn't have control over finances.

We don't have the actual contract to examine, sure. But we do know what Jeff Ireland has stated himself. He has final say over Philbin:

    http://blogs.sun-sentinel.com/sport...-over-miami-dolphins-personnel-decisions.html

And yes, he had final say when Parcells was here.

    http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/dolphins/2008-01-03-cameron-fired_N.htm

And your piece about him not having ultimate final say because he doesn't control finances is stretching it. That's like saying Ross doesn't own the team because he can't make a lot of decisions without league approval.

Stretching it how? You're essentially saying that middle-management is making final decisions for a billion dollar enterprise? Is a product manager for Apple deciding the budget for manufacturing the iPhone? Thats *** backwards if true. Do you really believe that Jeff Ireland has the authority to decide whether they spend $140M or $120M on player salaries??? Jeff Ireland isn't qualified enough to make decisions on things such as say, offset language. Hell, even the Miami Dolphins state that he doesn't have final say over the salary cap and contracts:

I'm not sure how "he helps" equates to having final say.

Now here is what they say about Aponte:

I'm not sure how anyone can say Ireland has "final say" (which is an awfully ambiguous description). The team makes it clear that there is someone else above him in regards to negotiating contracts, and managing the salary cap.

You're stretching because you're reaching for a definition of final say that supports your position but doesn't resemble the commonly accepted definition and usage of the term. Everyone knows what final say means. No player gets added, no player trade gets consummated, unless Ireland agrees.

Philbin doesn't go and execute a trade on his own. Ross doesn't surreptitiously add a player without Ireland knowing. Ireland consents, or it doesn't happen.

Are there restrictions? Yes. Once Ireland gives the green light, the restrictions and concerns come into play. Ireland can't add 53 Pro Bow Players and bypass the salary cap. Salary cap, contract negotiations, terms etc. are handled by other people. But they don't negotiate contracts with players Ireland hasn't given the green light on.

Let me get this straight. You're not sure, how Ireland can say he has final say? This isn't something we're inferring here. This is Ireland telling us he has final say. How you can dispute that in the face of actual quotes is beyond me. I mean, you're really close to telling us there are no troops in Baghdad ;)
