Pick Analysis: Jerry Reese doesn't get enough credit for his willingness to add talent to positions of strength. Austin is a legitimate first-round talent with the potential to be a dominant interior player in their one-gap scheme. His combination of strength, power and athleticism is off the charts, and he should be a terrific contributor as part of a deep defensive line rotation

Austin has first round talent, but he did not play football last season and there are concerns about his character and work ethic. He appears to be a prototypical 3-technique defensive tackle, as he is a big boy with outstanding athleticism. He has great feet and the lateral agility to move quickly down the line and make tackles on the edge. He uses his quick heavy hands to shed blocks and has the closing burst to make plays in the backfield. Austin's off the field issues may prevent him from being a first round pick, but he could be a major steal in round two.

Austin had lots of talent. But beyond some flashes. It never showed at NC. When I watched him play I came away very unimpressed. Had him graded in 5th or later. Giants took him in the 2nd based on talent and potential.

I think it's a pretty good project to have sitting around, but he's another 3-technique isn't he? It's a little *** backwards to sign another one when we've got like 4 3-techniques and a single hurt 1-technique on the roster.

I believe Francis is on the Patriots practice squad now.

Austin is a pick-up with a high ceiling. But whether they can get him there or invest enough time to do it is another question.

Both this signing and the Danny Watkins signing is interesting. The Phins are pulling former high-round picks off other teams and seeing if the coaching staff there can "flip" them, and I'm cool with that.

    Here he is this preseason:

Austin initial start in the pros has been one of injury and lack of experience. He did play in 8 games.

I thought he's had experience at both, but he does strike me as more of a 3-technique. I wonder if the short-term plan is moving Randy Starks to the 1 technique spot, at least until Soliai is back.

Either way, I think this signing could pay more dividends in 2014 than this year if he sticks around.

As far as a roster spot, I wonder if they move Dimitri Patterson or Jamar Taylor to IR with a designation to return at this point. I believe that still frees up the necessary roster spot, at least for the time being.

It's a good risk to take. The guy is an exceptional athlete if he can ever stay healthy.

Sounds like another reclamation project like Watkins. High upside if the light comes on and they make it, cut them loose for little cost if they don't.

My Giants guy says Austin is very talented, but they were in a numbers crunch at DT. Only so many of them you are gonna keep. He played well in the preseason. He talked to Austin's college roommate. Austin is a good ol' boy type, and a good kid, but kind of follower. He needs to be around strong leadership. If he is, he has the ability to be a real gem.

I'd tend to doubt Stanford gets cut. I'd bet they'd move someone to IR before cutting someone. If they do cut someone, I'd imagine it would be someone like a Josh Kaddu, who hasn't played a snap all year. Stanford has contributed on special teams.

Just spitballing trying to think of a name. Teams dont usually carry 11 DBs, and if Taylor and Davis are ready, then Sanford maybe expendable. Also, doubt he'd be claimed by another team, and you maybe able to sign him back in a few weeks if need be. With Patterson and Taylor healing slowly though, Kaddu may make more sense.

One of the beat writers described him as a "Phillip Merling type". The context suggested he meant a guy with a very, very high ceiling and a very, very low desire to play the game. If being out of football for a few weeks turned the light on for him then we have a steal but the odds are against it. I would have preferred taking Francis back from New England, off their PS and onto our 53 but I guess that boat has sailed.

Change of scenery could do Austin good and potentially leave us walking away with a DT of the future. Dealing with competition in NY is an understatement. Cullen Jenkins, Linvall Joseph, Shaun Rogers, Mike Patterson, and this year's 2nd rounder Johnathan Hankins. He's definitely better suited as a 3 tech and is in the mold of a Randy Starks IMO, a guy who's quick off the snap and can be disruptive in the backfield but also has enough strength to hold his own against the run. He's been behind the 8 ball in the reps department at NY and dating back to missing his final year at UNC, so there's still some upside to be attained.

With the injury issues on the line I don't think they would cut Martin, who can play multiple positions. I think a linebacker might make sense given Misi is going to be ok.

It is a long season, so Francis could wind his way back to Miami. But Austin is a good risk here.

Any player that puts a jest out of action (so long as it was a clean hit) is fine with me...he deserves a shot just for that reason...hehehe

Seriously, don't know much about the guy, but likely a fill in until Big Paul is back, as most have said...

Remember he was a 2nd rounder just 2 years ago. This is a low risk high reward signing. We shouldn't be surprised if he is cut in 3 weeks, nor would it be a surprise if he impacts to the point he becomes part of the 3 man DT rotation next season for us.

This is what a good staff and locker room can do...make your lazy *** realize that your playing a game, and that if you don't get your sh&$ together, your *** will be broke on the street one day..If that message is communicated the right way, sometimes you can get thru the lazy player.

Well, depending on Soliai, he very well could see 10 snaps or more this weekend as we now have -0- Dline depth atm, not even another DT on the roster and no one who can simply slide over to fill in.
