He's basing his rankings off last year so far. He said next week will be only 2013. I don't kow why now isn't only this year. SMH

Most people place too much emphasis on what already happened. They seem to believe that players will always be what the were. That's why you often see young pro bowl worthy players overlooked for name players that are no longer playing well. I don't see much value in that. There's a hundred places where you can read a recap of what happened. I'm much more focused on development. I prefer to look at what will happen going forward. I find that looking at a player or team's last four games or how they've done against a particular opponent or scheme (if it was somewhat recent) as a better indicator of what they're likely to do in the next game.

My prediction for RT was that he would be a top 10 QB by the end of the season and potentially a top QB by year 4 or 5.

So far this season he's indeed top 10 in WPA and EPA. He's lower in DVOA right now, but that's probably due to no opponent adjustments yet, and his relatively high sack\fumble numbers.

Yessir - 9. On pace for 72.... Good for us Atlanta has an average D-Line and just lost their starting End for the season. That matchup plays well. :train:

At this rate Tanny won't make the season. HAVE to fix that or he'll be on IR. I think the OL will find there groove. After the BYE they have to block Mario Williams, who is playing good this year, on a D playing better than expected, on a team playing better than expected.

Right now, Ryan is 7th in the NFL among quarterbacks in WPA. WPA stands for win probability added. It's one of Brian Burke's stats at Advanced NFL Stats. This stat assigns a win value to certain plays and situations and adjusts for competition level. Right now, Ryan is 7th in the NFL. The top 10:

    1. Peyton Manning 1.03
    2. Jay Cutler 1.02
    3. Aaron Rodgers 0.91
    4. Philip Rivers 0.85
    5. Drew Brees 0.82
    6. Michael Vick 0.76
    7. Ryan Tannehill 0.64
    8. EJ Manuel 0.53
    9. Andrew Luck 0.53
    10 Alex Smith 0.51

RT's outpacing my expectations for him so far this year. I hoped he'd be a top 10 guy by the end of the season. I'm sure there are several measures and that he's not top 10 in some. I said I would be satisfied with 4000 yards 22/12 and 9 wins. After the first couple of games, I think he'll reach/surpass those goals. I'm not talking about his pace b/c opponents will vary.

BTW I noticed I said top QB by year 4 or 5 in my post above. I meant to say top 5 QB.

As Tannehill keeps improving, I just want to let the feeling (of having a special quarterback) sink in deep inside. It's nice! And it's doubly nice putting him with the defense we send out there each week.

Interesting what Rosenthal says about a couple of the quarterbacks. I totally agreed with him that I thought Andrew Luck, while not having his best game, looked just fine against the Dolphins. The guy's great, or if he's not quite there yet, he's not far from it. Then, even after his team winning against Pittsburgh, I thought it was interesting to note that Rosenthal has Andy Dalton under the trending down section. Again, I agree. Dalton has pretty good weapons, I feel, but he seems pretty consistently inaccurate, at least in the games I've watched him (admittedly that's not a lot, but you get the lay of the land). He seems like one of those middle of the road QBs. With his team being pretty good, the Bengals (and Dalton's) record is probably going to stay around the 8-10 wins tally each year. And when it's like that, when really is the time to pull the plug, if Rosenthal is right and the Bengals make a decision (if Dalton doesn't improve too much) that it must be the QB that is holding the team back? That's a tough one, because you're generally not going to find a great QB in free agency (although there have been exception, i.e. Brees), and drafting a QB... well, it generally takes a year or so for the QB to develop, so your team ages and changes while the new QB sinks or swims. Maybe Dalton improves enough, though. Time will tell.

Back to Tannehill, it's hard not to like what we're seeing right now. And he seems to "get it" when something problematic comes along. Earlier in the week, I think Chris Perkins (it could have been Omar Kelly) put out an article about how Tannehill was taking one for the team by protecting his linemen in saying that he was responsible for nearly half the sacks. The author of the article begged to differ. Personally, I think Tannehill was correct. The effect in owning the responsibility doesn't hurt as far as being a good teammate, but I do think Tannehill has been responsible for quite a few of the sacks he's taken. Obviously, the one he held the ball forever until the Colts LB came free, and Tannehill curled up in protection and went down was on him. But at least two or three more have been because he hasn't stepped up into the pocket, pockets which have been there. He took a couple of just those kind of sacks in the Colts game, one of which resulted in his "fumble". Later in the game, he learned his lesson -- but just. On the play of the long pass to Mike Wallace, I think it was Mathis coming around Clabo's edge, and Tannehill stepped up just barely in time to get the throw off. A millisecond later, and Mathis hits the ball or Tannehill's arm. Anyway, all that to say, when he talked about it this week, it wasn't just to alleviate the media pressure on the linemen. It was taking accountability for his own mistakes, and saying he's going to correct that aspect of his game going forward. He did it in-game on that last play (but just by a bit!), but over the next few games, I bet we see him get better at stepping up. And that's just the issue I'm focusing on now. I'm sure there are others he's seeing in film and the coaches are talking to him about. But with all the positives of his better accuracy, better weapons, carrying the team in Game 1, winning the team over, etc., in my opinion one of his greatest strengths (and Mike Sherman seems to stress this about Tannehill as well), is that he corrects his mistakes. He's going to get better.

Agreed. Anybody who doesn't see how special Luck is, is just clueless about QBs.

And that's been my feeling on Dalton all along. I see him as a decent QB, but not one that is likely to ever be a franchise guy. I never lamented or blasted the team for not taking him.

RT is definitely responsible for about half of the sacks. That's actually usually the case with QBs. The Ireland critics tried to ignore that since it undercut their b*tching about the OL, but the QB is a huge part of the sack/pass pressure equation. I counted four sacks that we should have had (and would have against most QBs) that Luck just avoided. I saw at least 2 sacks that were clearly on RT against Indy. The one that pissed me off the most was that one in the 4th. He had all kinds of time but couldn't find anyone. Eventually a rusher broke free and RT didn't throw it away. IMO if he doesn't take that sack we pick up the first down on one of the next two plays and don't have that drama over the QB sneak/challenge/reversal. With that first we probably hit the FG (at least), score a TD or even run out the clock. It didn't cost us this game, but it was a mistake that killed a drive. All that being said, it's great to have a mistake to learn from that doesn't cost you the game. I believe that RT has the personality where he won't ignore the mistake b/c we won. He'll still learn from it.

I just want to see him have the dual threat consciousness as he moves thru a play, it's a fine balance between staring down the barrell or having the awareness to know when the play is dead from the pocket and knowing when to scramble with eyes downfield, or even when to make that transition from no more time to make reads to attacking the L.o.s for a gain..

It's interesting as hell to me that thru the first two weeks we haven't seen anything close to a moving pocket, nor Ryan stealing a few bases..yet were 2 and 0..lol..At some point, I'm hoping that light comes on as to when he needs to tuck and run, he's on pace to do it less than last year.
