Oliver has really disappointment this year for me.He is just having a lot of trouble setting the edge and the colts really took advantage in the first half.I was thinking this guy was going to have a breakout year but that has not been the case.I am starting to think Shelby should be given a shot to start because he has been been playing well the first 2 weeks.
I took the liberty of editing the thread title since Olivier Vernon is probably who you meant. As for Vernon's play, he played well the first game, the other day though Costanzo was his daddy. He will need to play much better.
Yup, he was getting praise for having a decent day against Joe Thomas, but he was embarrassed on Sunday. I've been OV's biggest supporter here and I will continue to be. Can't be jumping off the ledge after one bad game. I expect him to rebound this week.
Considering Cam Wake had a poor day rushing the RT too, and Luck is very dangerous at escaping the pocket I firmly belief both hd extra responsibilties in containment that interfered with them rushing as normal.
Not jumping off of ledge but I was really high on him coming out of camp and to tell you the truth shelby has been real impressive.
Yes. Shelby seems to be making more plays. I'm disappointed as well. I think the real weakness on the D is on that left side. He and Misi are serviceable but that's about it. They don't make big plays and often get blocked and engaged by blockers too easily. The only other concern on D is the number of injuries to the CBs. If the CBs are healthy I like the rest of the D a lot. Not perfect. Not dominant. But, there's a lot of playmakers. Much faster team than last year.
Same here, suspect Luck's mobility dictated some things to our approach to passrushing. Gap control mattered more than getting upfield
I think putting Olivier Vernon in that position might be a little optimistic size-wise. It's not exactly what Odrick was playing, but I think he might be better off backing up Wake and having Derrick Shelby playing that position. He's a little bit bigger and going to be more comfortable in tighter techniques.
that was my read on the days pressure as well...it looked like Cam in particular was holding back a bit to keep the edge set and pocket contained... but at the same time I'm no pro in analyzing this **** haha
That's also what I was wondering. The game plan may have been to keep contain on the outside and pressure him up the middle.
I think it's easy to forget that a fresh guy coming off the bench has more energy than a guy whose been battling on every down, including run plays. The great thing about our DL is if one or two guy has an off week, we have 5-6 other guys that can make plays. Vernon is still young and will continue to improve. If not, he will lose his spot to Jordan. Either way, the Dolphins win.
Yea I could totally understand this as it didn't seem like Wake shot up field much. However, it begs the question, if our ends weren't shooting up field to get after quarterback, why did they have such a hard time setting the edge? The ends really struggled with the run game in this one.
Hasn't Shelby been strictly used from the left side so far? Even in preseason, it seemed like every time I noticed him, he was rushing from the left. Most pass rushers seem to have a preferential side, one where they perform better on one side than the other. I've seen some stats on this site before referencing just that with guys like Wake (who rushes far better from the left side of the defensive line). Maybe that's the case with Shelby. Seems like the coaches would have a good read on where each guy plays best. But as far as Vernon, I do think he has struggled to this point. Read in the Sun-Sentinel that PFF had of all the DEs that had 25 snaps or more, Olivier Vernon was the worst DE in football to this point. One might not buy into all the PFF stats, but if folks are looking at every play and making valuations, it probably means something not so good.
Well Luck made it a point to release the ball as soon as it was snapped. So our defensive line looked very average because of it. Kind of hard to get any pressure on the guy when he's only holding onto the ball for 1-2 seconds.
All I know is the run before Bradshaws TD, Vernon was blocked by a WR. Which made him lose contain. IMO, that should never happen. He should have just thrown the wr away, but he did not even look to be fighting through it. So far (yes only 2 games) he has been a disappointment. Let's hope he just had a bad game.
I didnt have high expectations for Vernon last month, he has to rush against the LT which we all know is the dominant pass blocker on the opposing team. I just hope the Vernon/Shelby/Jordan rotation can reach a combined 15+ sacks, and at the very least break even against the run. So far they have 3.5 sacks in two games, thats approximately 27 sacks at the end of the season at the current pace. That would be a ridiculously good year for these three youngsters, but highly unlikely. One thing is for sure, our future is looking very bright on the defensive line.
He looks more comfortable on the left. He started at RDE in at least one preseason game. Seems like the HOF game and the last game. He had trouble setting the edge vs the outside run is my main recollection. He has gotten consistent pass rush pressure though during the preseason and the regular season. Edit: I guess his ratio of pressures to snaps was not that good in preseason. He had 81 pass rush snaps and 7 pressures consisting of 3 sacks, 1 hit and 3 hurries. In the regular season though, 22 pass rush snaps and 4 total pressures. That is very good. 2 sacks, 1 hit and 1 hurry.
I thought Derrick Shelby outperformed OV in 2012 from a pure efficiency standpoint. You know it's funny because I watched the film of the Cleveland game a few times and tried to see everything at once and I thought Vernon had some good moments in that game but just overall wasn't affecting the passer as much as he should be, given his opportunities. I thought the stats bore that out. When I went back and re-watched focusing on him and only him, I thought he at the very least showed some promise that I hadn't seen before. It still wasn't anything that I hadn't already seen from Koa Misi over the years as far as pass rush total efficiency and effectiveness, but that's kind of a step up from what I saw from OV in 2012 and preseason 2013. He was up against one of the best left tackles in the game and his speed-to-power move was genuinely giving Thomas trouble even when OV wasn't getting pressure. I liked that. But then this week...I mean, this week was so much worse than last week and I can't figure out why. If he could find Joe Thomas' breastplate to convert speed-to-power then he should be able to do that to Anthony Castonzo who is notorious making his chest too available. Either way I think Derrick Shelby should be getting more run at that spot. Or the rookie Dion Jordan. If his shoulder is feeling OK it wouldn't hurt to see how he does on some base downs. He's much more powerful than people give him credit for being.
Chris Perkins really presses Philbin on OV in this presser: http://www.miamidolphins.com/multim...ers_More/17f3a8e2-9e1c-4dd1-9eb8-9f29554a3042
If OV cannot generate better pressure going against Sam Baker, then we can really become concerned about him. He is the worst OT in the league by PFF's grading system. We have their worst DE going against their worst OT. Something's gotta give. For that matter, Wake should have a field day against Lamar Holmes.
Doesn't it make sense that if we have an effective rotation in the front four that we could wear down opposing offensive lines thereby getting a better push on the quarterback? With all of the talk about our depth up front I was just wondering on what the thought on that?
Whatta you mean Hondo? Do you not think we have an effective rotation that produces quality pass rush numbers through-ought?
