You mean they would have changed the schedule so we opened the season in Denver if Ireland had just signed Leach? Damn.

Sadly, I did too once I saw the play. Even though I know it was bumped as a joke... its still sad that it was.

That being said, I really wish that deal had gotten done.

He can block and catch. Everything you look for in a FB. We get Clutts instead.

Why did we even bring him to Miami if we had no intention whatsoever of signing him?

We brought in a lot of offensive linemen also. We could have used a couple. We could definitelty have used Leach at fullback.

If that idiot Ireland would've drafted Oher, WE would've won the Super Bowl thanks to Jacoby Jones. :pity:

It's a fair question to ask: Why isn't Leach a Dolphin?

If the Miami FO had decided that a prototypical blocking FB wasn't needed, then fine. But to then sign Clutts, a very poor man's Leach?

Just another in the long list of puzzling decisions by our front office.

Is that all Clutts is? A poor man's Leach? Is Leach also a core special teams player that can and does play on every ST unit? Clutts can and does.

  20. pdaj

The Dolphins had a top special teams unit last year, and will have one again this season with or without Clutts. IMO, adding Leach's nastiness to our offense, especially in short yardage situations, easily supplants Clutts' ability as a ST player.

Maybe the coaches think Clutts is close to equal as a blocker, but younger, and cheaper. I think we should give Clutts a chance to show what he can do, before lamenting the non signing of Leach yet again.

I'm not quite lamenting ... yet. And had Clutts been chosen over Leach, your theory would have more credence. Instead, Clutts was claimed off waivers long after the Leach decision was made, perhaps after Ireland lamented passing on the Raven.

But, regardless, I just think the subject is worth discussing. If Clutts proves to be a valuable member of this team in the near future, I'll have no issue admitting my error in this thread.

I have seen the theory broached that Clutts was brought in to mainly replace Spitler on STs. That seems odd to me. If the backup LB who took his spot cannot replace Spitler on STs then we have a problem.

I am fine with the Clutts signing at this point - likely a better player than any of the other FBs on the roster.

But, not signing Leach is still a mystery to me. He was, and is, head and shoulders better than any FB on the roster and it really wasn't that much more of a cap hit or money doled out than another player. Minimal stuff.

I also think that having a guy like Leach on a team with several question-marks on the OL would have only given a significant security blanket to two young, core players (Tannehill and Miller); as well as adding a few receptions here and there.

I just do not understand that decision before training camp (before we knew anything about Clutts' availability - so one can't really compare those decisions).

Oh wow... that's great logic there. According to you, Ireland just brought him down for a vacation. Use that little brain in your head, we brought him down because we intended on signing him.

Why didn't the deal get done is another issue all together, but there could be a multitude of reasons. Just because you bring a guy into town, doesn't automatically mean he's going to sign. It appears to me that nothing we could have done would have made Leach sign. Reports are we offered him deals, which it looks pretty obvious he just brought back to Baltimore, where he wanted to stay all along. Baltimore is pretty well known for letting their guys go out, shop themselves and come back to get a deal done. So are some other teams out there.

We all know you hate Mr. Ireland, but its beyond ridiculous now. Let it go...

I don't think Leach wanted to leave Baltimore. I think he was just trying to gain some leverage in negotiations with them.

If Leach is so good and so cheap, why did he ends up back with the ravens and not with another team. Smells like another leverage deal to me.

Perzactly! He got the bid from Miami he wanted to get to go back to B'more and get what he wanted from them! Like buying a car, only with a lot more money involved, and the team is doing the buying!

May have been a leverage deal, who knows. Probably wanted more to leave Baltimore, which makes sense.

Really would have liked to have him in Miami. Very small chance Clutts does anything near the level of Leach, save for special teams. And there's the leadership factor....

Knowing this team's history, I wouldn't be surprised if Clutts isn't on the roster in three weeks.

Seems like everyone's so rubbed raw by the personnel discussion that people can't be honest about it.

Vonta Leach is a pro bowl caliber player at a minor position that the Dolphins happened to need. He got cut loose and wanted to sign with the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins seemed interested in him, brought him in to talk, and never made an offer. He went back to the Ravens on a cheap contract and had a very good game last night.

Is it damning? Not really. It's kind of a minor position in the modern NFL. But is it nothing at all? No, it's not that either. Miami probably should have signed him. It probably is exactly what it looks like.

$2.00 million up front in 2013 and $1.75 million in 2014. Tyler Clutts makes $555,000 this year. Difference of $1.445 million in 2013. Considering the team is $22.3 million under the 2013 salary cap, I don't think that's that big a difference. If you want higher quality you're usually going to pay a bit more for it.

I have no problem with Clutts..I really don't know anything about him at all, positive or negative.
Although I think as a coach you'd rather have a guy who has the history or Leach, even if it does cost you 1.5 million more.
