By no means am I advocating that nothing should have been done. Some of the moves the article questions are moves I loved. Signing Wallace and signing Grimes. It's not so much that I question the moves made, but rather the players that were not retained. I don't know what happened with Long, but it would have been nice to retain his services and STILL add a guy like Clabo. It would have been nice, if at all possible to retain Sean Smith and STILL add a guy like Grimes. I also know there's something called a salary cap and you can't keep sign every free agent and then add several others at a high price. It just seems to me at the end of the day there's a very real possibility that when all is said and done, you add up the additions and subtractions and you could be looking at a zero sum game or; worse, less than last year. We know Wallace is an upgrade. We can also reasonably assume offensive line could be worse than last year. And let's call Sean Smith for Brent Grimes an upgrade. Depending on how big an upgrade Wallace is, and how big a falloff there is in O-line play, maybe it's a standstill. Which brings us to the point a lot of you have already made. It's going to have so much more to do with Tannehill's progression. I just worry O-line play could be a real roadblock.
How does Marshall not fit a scheme? If he was on a team with good complimentary WR's there are enough passes to go around. He only averages 6 catches a game usually. Maybe 7 or 8. There are 300 completions to go around.
My thoughts as well. When Marshall was released, Philbin/Ireland commented it had nothing to do with personality issues. Which lead many to speculate that Marshall didn't fit the scheme and the claims that Philbin's offense doesn't require a "True #1." Lettuce be reality for a second. Brandon Marshall fits every system, including Philbin's. What can't Brandon Marshall do that Jordy Nelson can, again? Marshall is whacked in the head and Miami didn't want to deal with him anymore. The last straw was Marshall allegedly punching a woman. The same offense that got Ocho canned.
Nobody has said that. Basic reading comprehension would lead to the understanding that people here are saying Wallace is a better fit for what Miami wants to do. The only other comments on the comparison have been about how Marshall has more baggage than Wallace. That's a point I doubt even the most ardent critic would contest.
Better than the Jets', yes. Better than the Bills'? The Bills have a prototypical QB with more college experience than ours, and their depth has been hurt by injuries, not incompetence. I think we're sleeping on the Bills a little bit. I'm still waiting to see evidence of this supposed Terrell Owens attitude Marshall had. Also, there is no scheme in which Marshall doesn't fit. He's 6'4'', runs a 4.5 40, and routinely outsmarts defenders. It's embarrassing that we couldn't get more production out of him.
Their TV stuff is better than their sports content. Barnwell is a complete buffoon. His gambling stuff is laughably bad to anyone who even has a passing knowledge of sports betting.
Was reported that Karl Dorrell moved from WR coach to QB coach because of Marshall: http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/01/30/dolphins-coaches-found-brandon-marshall-difficult/
I really dont know what to think of the Fins (as a fan who IMO keeps up with what they are doing and how their players are / have performed) 1. Jake Long's last couple years with Miami were pretty bad and it was clear to me he was on a decline. He may respond to a new environment (with the Rams) a revive his career but I think he is done as a franchise player in the NFL. 2. I love Miller but that is as a fan, he really needs to show it on the field this year. 3. Ryan's safety valve is going to be Gibson once they get on the same page… and I expect Sims to have a big impact on this offense later on in the year. 4. Grimes is the best CB we have had since Surtain or Madison. AND he is so much better then either Davis or Smith that is would be ridiculous to even try to compare the them. Patterson might be a notch below Smith and or Davis but not enough to worry about it. It isnt like we Smith or Davis were ever playmakers for the Fins… Hell, Davis cant even stay on the field having missed almost 1/3 of the games played over the past 2 seasons. Not to mention all his off the field issues that got him traded from Miami to begin with. 5. I really dont have an opinion on Jordan right now… just have not seen him play enough. 6. Keller loss is huge 7. I have always been a fan of Odrick's I think the guy is a much under rated player by everyone… including many Fins Fans… and I will leave it at that. 8. As for the Dolphins over paying… are they not like 5 mil under that cap right now?
I wouldnt say that Wallace is a better WR but there is no doubt they play a different style of game. Wallace fits what the Fins need much more then Marshall does (style wise). What people dont understand or dont want to understand is that Wallace is going to have a huge impact on this offense even when the ball is not thrown in his direction. Wallace is going to influence what defenses do and he is going to open up the field for other players…. that is something Marshall never could did in Miami.
Manuel is now a prototypical QB? And even if he is… he is a rookie… let him play a couple games in the NFL before you start pouring his bust for Canton...
You could replace EJ's name with Chad Henne's, and his premise would still fit but be equally incorrect.
This constitutes evidence when similar events have not happened in Denver or Chicago? He's been prototypical. That's why he went in the first round. He's a risk, but he at least fits the mold.
Similar events did happen in Denver. Which is why he was traded. The most damning piece of evidence is Marshall's diagnosis, though.
Cant speak for Chicago yet but Denver got rid of him because he was a headache they no longer wanted to deal with. as for EJ…. the guy is going to be a bust, he wasnt very good at FSU IMO and he is not going to be a very good QB in the pros either (JMO)
Good thread...I was pretty down after reading Barnwell's article, but some posters had some pretty good ripostes. Still a skeptic, but a slightly more optimistic one.
I just think we all have to get used to the idea that if the Dolphins have a winning season and maybe sneak into the playoffs, only us fans saw it coming. This isn't unusual. Fans tend to overrate their team. Us fans seem to be much higher on Ryan than just about everyone else. Grantland (again) puts Ryan as the 6th worst QB in the league http://www.grantland.com/blog/the-t...terback-league-2013-spread-your-wings-and-fly Oh and #26 in the power rankings http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/9637362/afc-power-poll
