53 Opinions Let's get the convo goin' on the final 53. For starters, I believe we should keep Spitler and Trusnik above all backups, unless we want another Ninkovich. I believe they are both very good quality backups, and could even start for a team. Belichick would grab either IMHO. I'd like to see Matthews and Tyms at WR, rather than inconsistent McNutt or Bumphis. Thigpen...? I dunno. I honestly wouldn't care if they traded Moore while he has value. I don't think he played well this preseason, and Devlin is Philbin's pet. Would there be any takers for DT? Maybe involve a TE here for one or both? Miller and Gray will be a great combo, with a dash of Gillislee. I'm a little concerned about the depth on the OL, and CB... Front seven should be scary.
Tyms is a feel good story and looks to have a world of potential. Just ain't been playing football that long. I'd hate to give up on him. The young WR who could help us most right now, and also has a lot of potential in his own right, is Bumphis. If I were to pick the 4th WR that I wanted most, going into the season, it would be Bumphis. He is the best choice as a backup to Gibson as the slot. In 4 wides, Gibson and Bumphis in the slots, with Hartline and Wallace outside. That's how I'd do it. If we carry 6 WRs, McNutt or Matthews. It is a toss up to me. One of the two, at least, should clear waivers, both have PS eligibility.
I mentioned this in a different thread, but Matthews has disappeared since his injury. No one is getting him the ball, and none of the quarterbacks seem to have developed any chemistry with him. I liked him before the injury, but I'd like to see him reassert his place as the number 4.
Matthews showed so much more last year in preseason and regular season than any of the guys were talking about this year..Mcnutt, Bumphis, Tyms.. If he's healthy and someone takes his place on the roster I would be shocked.
I agree that he showed enough last year and even earlier this year that he seemed a lock for the 4th guy. But since returning from injury he has been invisible. I'm wondering if he's still hurt. You know how these decisions go when it comes to the final cut. I'm concerned he's not showing the coaches enough to make it. I hope my concerns prove groundless.
I don't know his rep count since injury but it seems far less than the others..far less, which tells me he wasn't ready for game action..they know what he brings to the table, what he has on tape has not been outplayed, I would bet he makes it.
If it is a lack of reps that would make sense. Here's to RM tearing it up tonight. I imagine he'll play quite a bit.
Thanks Deej... trying to go with the clean look of the new uni/logo. True enough on Matthews. Tonight they'll be playing plenty.
my final 53... of course we'll add at least two guys not currently on the roster... but... Welp.. the final 53, the moment you've been waiting for... I've seen enough... WR Hartline, Wallace, Gibson, Matthews, Tyms OL Martin, Incognito, Pouncey, Samuda, Clabo, Garner, Thomas, Jerry, Yeatman TE Egnew, Sims, Clay RB/FB Miller, Thomas, Gillislee, Rodriguez QB Tannehill, Devlin, Moore DL Wake, Odrick, Starks, Soliai, Vernon, Shelby, Randall, Jordan, Francis LB Misi, Ellerbe, Wheeler, Freeny, Trusnik, Jenkins, Spitler CB Grimes, Patterson, Taylor, Davis, Carroll S Clemons, Jones, Wilson, McCray K/P/ST: Sturgis, Fields, Thigpen, Denney IN: Tyms, Jenkins OUT: McNutt, Kaddu Practice Squad candidates... Bumphis, Robinson, McNutt, Presley (not sure if he's eligible but between him Posey and Stanford, I'd take him here, nice INT at the end to seal it)
Andrew Abramson @AbramsonPBP 21m Philbin: I'm not opposed to keeping a fullback but we don't have to go into the season with one #Dolphins hmmm Evan Rodriguez.. nice knowing ya.
QB Tannehill | Moore | Devlin RB Miller | Thomas | Gillislee | Thigpen FB Rodriguez (likely will look for replacement) WR Wallace | Hartline | Gibson | Matthews | McNutt TE Clay | Sims | Egnew OT Martin | Clabo | Garner | Yeatman OG Incognito | Jerry | Thomas C Pouncey | Samuda DE Wake | Vernon | Jordan | Martin | Shelby DT Soliai | Odrick | Starks | Randall LB Ellerbe | Wheeler | Misi | Trusnik | Spitler | Robinson | Jenkins CB Grimes | Patterson | Carroll | Taylor | Davis S Jones | Clemons | Wilson | McCray K Sturgis P Fields LS Denney Practice Squad Candidates: Bumphis, Brenner, D.Jones, Okpalaugo, Francis, Kovacs, T.Robertson, J.Gray, B.Tyms
I don't think Bumphis made the team. He had the biggest stat line tonight with 99 Ytds and a TD but he just frustrates the crap with extreme highs and then other times he doesn't even seem like he's trying. Rodriguez and Egnew didn't help themselves any either. Egnew on the Pats would have been cut. Gotta cut your losses. Mathews will make it. Spitler definately makes the team, Shelby and Trusnick are definately in. Presley is practice squad.
I think McNutt is going to be on the practice squad. I don't think Bumphis makes the team. WR Wallace, Hartline, Gibson, Matthews, Tyms TE Clay, Sims and waiver wire pick up. I think Egnew will be cut by the 2nd game.
I don't see what some people see in Tyms. I'd take Tyms over Keenan Davis... that's it. And I really dislike Keenan Davis so that's not a glowing endorsement.
Size. He's 6-3 we need that in the red zone. Sims is 6-4 but he needs to learn to run routes and find openings on the filed and in the endzone.
If size is your determining factor then you should prefer McNutt IMO. The only argument I can understand for Tyms right now is athleticism but that should only get you so far.
ERod is more than just a FB. It would be very short sighted to cut him over one drop. Right now, he maybe our best H-Back too.
The only reason to keep Tyms is because you think his skill set has down the road potential and you think he wouldn't clear waivers to make it to the PS. If I think my 4, 5, or 6 WRs have to contribute this year, he is my last choice. If we keep 5, it is Matthews and Bumphis, and if we keep 6, then it is McNutt if it were up to me.
Yeah, it seems like in preseason, most take the what have you done lately approach. If one looks at the entire preseason as a whole, IMO he deserves to make it.
McNutt flashed big play potential tonight. That's good enough for me. Give that man a spot! I think Bumphis is odd man out. Wallace-Hartline-Gibson-Matthews-McNutt-Tyms. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Seems like a dig at me but whatever... I'm sorry man, the writing is on the wall. He hasn't played much in the first half in games outside of punt returns.
WR: Wallace, Hartline, Gibson, McNutt, Tyms, Matthews TE: Sims, Clay RB: Miller, Thomas, Gray, Thigpen FB: Rodriguez C: Pouncey G: Incognito, Jerry, Garner, Samuda T: Martin, Clabo, Yeatman, Thomas QB: Tannehill, Devlin, Moore CB: Grimes, Patterson, Carroll, Taylor, Davis S: Jones, Clemons, McCray, Wilson LB: Ellerbe, Wheeler, Misi, Freeny, Robinson, Trusnik, Kaddu DE: Wake, Vernon, Jordan, Odrick, Okpalaugo DT: Soliai, Starks, Francis, Randall
No it's not. Unless you think it pertains to you, that I do not know. I mean just fans in general. Why should what happened tonight carry more weight than what happened vs Dallas or any game in between?
I won't pretend to know what is on Jeff and Joe's minds on keeps and cuts. I only post who I would keep if it were up to me.
actually thought Bumphis had a good game last night. But I still think if we're prioritizing from #4 wr on... it's Matthews, Tyms, McNutt, Bumphis. McNutt did have the TD, and a nice back shoulder catch as well that stand out, but he also made two rather large mistakes. The facemask comes to mind. Tyms made the same move McNutt did that resulted in a TD to win the game, except Tyms drew a holding penalty.
I'm sure the coaches spend rigorous time coaching wide receivers how to tackle when the ball is intercepted. The only mistake I saw was not laying out for a pass when he tried to one hand it.
Well, I have been a McNutt advocate since training camp so I don't see how I am weighing this game over the rest.
Dolphins may be able to stash Chad Bumphis on the practice squad. By having three games where he got a total of like 11 pass snaps...the Dolphins may have successfully "hidden" him. I don't care so much who is on the 53 man roster versus who is on the practice squad. I just want certain guys to continue to be associated with the team.
Since you apparently don't understand... it's 15 yard penalty for making a stupid mistake. He didn't MISS a tackle. Does he or does he not play on special teams coverage as well? Something a fifth wr should do if he is going to make the team.... learn how to tackle!
If we're talking about McNutt's facemask penalty then it isn't so much learning to tackle as it is learning not to grab a dude's facemask. Not complicated. He should know better. If we're talking about Chad Bumphis' failed tackle attempt on the interception well, I do kind of chalk that up to a receiver being a receiver. Chad actually squared up, went right at the waist, delivered a nice blow, had his arms out to wrap the guy up, and he still fell off the tackle.
