Honestly, I think this is more about saving money than it is a vast difference in overall kicking ability. It does help that Sturgis appears to be better. Also, not sure if previously mentioned, but I believe Carpenter (with NFL experience greater than 4 years) is not subject to the 24 hour waiver process. Which is unfortunate, because I was wondering if someone would have picked up that contract. Guess that's a reason why we couldn't net anything for him in trade. As I'm sure we tried.

Looking at those percentages, the nickname DC-Money (DC$) seems like a misnomer.

Unless he had burgeoning businesses outside of football?

I always liked carp as a kicker, thought he was a real solid kicker, I believe he had a slump, now he should of stayed in better shape but I had a good opinion of him and felt like he could make any kick under pressure..I'm sure he's gonna make another team and have success..

The dolphins and Ireland cut him early so he could do just that, they could of held on to him hoping that another team suffered an injury at the position and possibly negotiated a trade, but they didnt Ike Rosenhaus said, the put the player first.

They also freed up more cash if that is needed if a player or situation arises , but yes they did a solid for carpenter by releasing him when they did.

I've never felt he was anything more than average. I thought it was a mistake when we cut Jay Feely to keep him in 2008.

Saw no reason to cut feely either..

Can't underestimate the ability to kick out of the endzone, take it at the 20 every time if we can..

I like Carpenter. But, he was inconsistent last year and I also think it's to his benefit to be released now (though I have to say it's tough to lose your job - hope he catches on and does well in another city - surely he's not the worst kicker out there).

Instructive lesson on how the Dolphins value draft currency.

Did Brady and the pats deserve to lose after those great drives to get his kicker in position to win superbowls in the final minutes ? I hope we win a Super Bowl on Sturgis's leg so you can talk about how we deserved to lose while we celebrate.

If your team can consistently put the kicker in position to do his job and make the kick for a win in tight games.... The team doesn't deserve to lose, that's asinine. That's like saying if you can't win by 2 scores you shouldn't be credited for besting your opponent.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports free agent K Dan Carpenter "already has work waiting" for him, but he's waiting for his wife to deliver the couple's first child.

As of Thursday, Carpenter's wife was three days past due. The longtime Dolphins kicker was released by Miami on Wednesday, and Schefter reports the Packers, Seahawks, Bucs, Browns, and Jets are teams "likely" to have interest.

Carpenter was kept and Feely was cut because Carpenter was the cheaper alternative at the time. Now Sturgis is the cheaper alternative to Carpenter and the Dolphins decided to go in that direction.
Sturgis appears to have the stronger leg at this time. Hopefully he will make the kicks during the regular season and will prove to be an upgrade over the Carpenter who played for the Dolphins in 2012.

I suspect Carpenter will be kicking for another team this season. According to reports, several teams have already shown interest in signing him but he wanted to wait to visit teams until his wife gives birth to there first child. The baby is due at any time now.

The Packers, Seahawks, Browns, and Jets are reported to be teams which have shown interest in Carpenter at this time.

Mason Crosby was terrible last year for the Packers so I could see that..... and Carpenter has statistically been better kicking in <40 degree weather (8 of 9) than 81+F.

The big difference is Sturgis is just a better kicker than Carpenter, even if they made the same money. Carpenter was not and currently still is not better than Jay Feely. Not for my money anyway.

I agree. Money aside, I would have taken Feely or Sturgis over Carpenter.

I agree Sturgis has a stronger leg than Carpenter. Whether he will end up being a better kicker in the NFL is still to be determined. It all comes down to converting FG's and hopefully Stugis will be better at that than Carpenter was last year.

As far as Feely goes, I always thought he was a great kicker and I agree he is better than Carpenter.

Well if he misses a fieldgoal in overtime this year in a Miami-New York Jets game, we'll be the better for it.

So, now that Carpenter has been released by the Cardinals... one of the teams which defeated us based on a missed Carpenter field goal, he has been reported to be picked up by the Jests, the other team which defeated us based on a missed Carpenter field goal.

Gadzooks! Does the shade of Tony Sparano remain haunting the Jests' facility? Or, are the Jests counting on needing a Carpenter field goal to beat the Dolphins and relying on the power of retribution to reinvigorate the [golden] toe of Carpenter?

What is that team's fascination with former Dolphins?

I mean I get it when teams always fight over the Patriots' leavings or the Packers' leavings. But the Dolphins? The Dolphins are and have been a mediocre team (at best) for a while. And the Jets keep picking up the guys that aren't wanted by that mediocre team.

In the division, you want to know about it. But otherwise it's just human interest and conversation.

I was so angry and upset when JT went to New York. Thought I'd never forgive him but in the end, one unmemorable season there doesn't change all the great he did for the Dolphins. I thought it was pretty obvious when we re-signed him in 2011 that he never wanted to go to the Jets to begin with, but had no other option.

Not to mention, he ended his career abusing the Jets just like old times. I'll be making the trip to Canton when the time comes.

I considered all that, but then compared him to Zach, who chose to go outside the division for his final season or two, and still didn't buy it. He chose to sign with the stej, when he could have played outside the division, then came back after Parcells left. It was Parcell's doing all along, but still - he chose the stej...

All is forgiven on my end. Watching Zack, JT and even Madison play together was an honor as a Dolphins fan. They were so dominant together. Breaks my heart we couldn't even get deep into the playoffs in all those years.

No, the stej just offered him the most. The Chargers, for one team, were wanting to pair him Merriman at the time. The stej offered him a $13M deal for 2 seasons, which was overpaying, but he took that for a chance to get back at Parcells.

Did you consider that he chose to play on a team that had no chance of beating his beloved Dolphins? That he chose to play on a team that would allow him a twice a year reunion with his friends and fans? And even if that wasn't the case, after everything JT did for the Dolphins, only to get it stuck to him by Parcells, can we REALLY blame him for signing with a rival? He was screwed and we all hated Parcells for what he did. Didn't JT deserve a little retribution against those who screwed him?

First you draft a kicker in the 5th (not something that happens very often)
Second, after spending the offseason and part of TC evaluating the younger guy, you make the obvious choice of cutting the guy with the larger salary, given that you feel comfortable enough with the rook...

All makes perfect sense (and cents)...

It wasn't much about his ability as it was his cost....

Nah...at this point in his career, at least for this season, it was what he needed to do to get a job for the year...the jests need a kicker and he can kick...
