Welp.. the final 53, the moment you've been waiting for... I've seen enough... WR Hartline, Wallace, Gibson, Matthews, Tyms OL Martin, Incognito, Pouncey, Samuda, Clabo, Garner, Thomas, Jerry, Yeatman TE Egnew, Sims, Clay RB/FB Miller, Thomas, Gillislee, Rodriguez QB Tannehill, Devlin, Moore DL Wake, Odrick, Starks, Soliai, Vernon, Shelby, Randall, Jordan, Francis LB Misi, Ellerbe, Wheeler, Freeny, Trusnik, Jenkins, Spitler CB Grimes, Patterson, Taylor, Davis, Carroll S Clemons, Jones, Wilson, McCray K/P/ST: Sturgis, Fields, Thigpen, Denney IN: Tyms, Jenkins OUT: McNutt, Kaddu Practice Squad candidates... Bumphis, Robinson, McNutt, Presley (not sure if he's eligible but between him Posey and Stanford, I'd take him here, nice INT at the end to seal it) After the Bucs game, I'm thinking I'm more unsure of the 53 now than ever... needless to say, there will be a lot of roster turnover at the bottom 5 to 7 guys... meaning we'll be bringing in guys from other teams to fill those spots... so this is kinda pointleess at this stage but here goes. WR Hartline, Wallace, Gibson, Matthews, McNutt OL Martin, Incognito, Pouncey, Samuda, Clabo, Garner, Thomas, Jerry, Yeatman TE Egnew, Sims, Clay RB/FB Miller, Thomas, Gillislee, Rodriguez QB Tannehill, Devlin, Moore DL Wake, Odrick, Starks, Soliai, Vernon, Shelby, Randall, Jordan, Francis LB Misi, Ellerbe, Wheeler, Freeny, Trusnik, Kaddu, Spitler CB Grimes, Patterson, Taylor, Davis, Carroll S Clemons, Jones, Wilson, McCray K/P/ST: Sturgis, Fields, Thigpen, Denney Out: Bumphis (just not getting the reps), Louis (nothing to see here), Marshall, Gray (that fumble was a killer) In: McNutt (runs nice routes, I like Tyms too for the PS if he's eligible), Spitler (special teams), Carroll (guess so), Gillislee (good game tonight) IMO there are clearly some guys who shouldn't be buying property in South Florida just yet. Gillislee and McNutt especially. after the Texans game, updated on 8.18.13, this is how I see the 53 now (and I'm going to try to post updated 53's as the preseason progresses): WR Hartline, Wallace, Gibson, Matthews, Bumphis OL Martin, Incognito, Pouncey, Samuda, Clabo, Garner, Thomas, Louis, Jerry, Yeatman TE Egnew, Sims, Clay RB/FB Miller, Thomas, Gray, Rodriguez QB Tannehill, Devlin, Moore DL Wake, Odrick, Starks, Soliai, Vernon, Shelby, Randall, Jordan, Francis LB Misi, Ellerbe, Wheeler, Freeny, Trusnik, Kaddu CB Grimes, Marshall, Patterson, Taylor, Davis S Clemons, Jones, Wilson, McCray K/P/ST: Sturgis, Fields, Thigpen, Denney Changes from previous: Out are TE Dustin Keller, DL Vaughn Martin, S Jordan Kovacs, LB Lee Robinson In is OL Will Yeatman, DT AJ Francis, S Kelcie McCray, LB Jason Trusnik Practice squad candidates... Kovacs, Robinson, Tristan O, Jenkins, Gillislee and McNutt.... Jenkins has looked really bad from what I can see of him. a 4th round waste at the moment. Maybe we can IR him somehow. he just doesn't look ready for anything. as of 8.11.13 this is how I see it WR Hartline, Wallace, Gibson, Matthews, Bumphis OL Martin, Incognito, Pouncey, Samuda, Clabo, Garner, Thomas, Louis, Jerry TE Keller, Egnew, Sims, Clay RB/FB Miller, Thomas, Gray, Rodriguez QB Tannehill, Devlin, Moore DL Wake, Odrick, Starks, Soliai, Vernon, Shelby, Randall, Jordan, Martin LB Misi, Ellerbe, Wheeler, Freeny, Robinson, Kaddu CB Grimes, Marshall, Patterson, Taylor, Davis S Clemons, Jones, Wilson, Kovacs K/P/ST: Sturgis, Fields, Thigpen, Denney And I"d say the PS is something like... Tristan Okpalaugo, Jelani Jenkins, Keelan Johnson, Jeff Adams, Marvin McNutt, Mike Gillislee
Might have a minor disagreement here and there but nothing major. Think you've got the most controversial stuff the same way I do.
Having the hardest time with linebacker. We could honestly go outside the organization and fill two spots there, for ST purposes clearly.
I think Gillislee makes the team. I think we carry only 3 TEs. -I think Clay and Rodriquez are fighting for 1 roster spot. I don't think Kaddu makes the team. I think Thigpen can go either way at this point as well.
Has anyone noticed who are the big contributors on special teams are? Think that will tell us more about our last spots at WR/LB.
What happened to that UF linebacker we drafted? Also what about that freakish athlete safety from I think it was the 7th round? Don Jones I think?
yeah, you are right, it does come down to ST"s. just from that Jags game, I know we had trouble on a # of punt coverages. The good moments I recall are Kovacs and I believe it was Kaddu combining on a nice stop in the 4th quarter. And Tyms had that hit on the punt / muff that Denney recovered to setup a score. Tyms beat two Jags players downfield and was right in the returners grill as the ball came down. I would venture to guess that had something to do with the muff.
Jenkins has been quiet, relatively speaking. And Jones has been even more silent. Jenkins was a 4th round pick... hmm... maybe I should add him to the 53, that's pretty high to not make the team as a rook.
So basically don't count out Tyms just yet. That 5th guy is going to have to show something on special teams (hell so does the 4th guy) to justify keeping them. That's probably why Bumphis was back taking kicks. If Bumphis can't show anything on ST's.....might have a hard time justifying him.
So basically, Jenkins and Gillisee, our 4-5 round picks, are going to cut, and you expect them to clear waivers? Not sherriff serious...
I thought the same. Does Devlin take up a spot? I forgot how 3rd string works. If he's declared inactive doesn't that free up a spot? Is it likely we keep Rodriguez and clay? Tough to see clay go but I'm not entirely sure he has a spot anymore. I never loved him but Nolan Carroll not being on this team seems odd to me as well
Was it Tyms that knocked the returner away from making the recovery? That was a smart, heads-up play. Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
QB Ryan Tannehill Matt Moore Pat Devlin HB Lamar Miller Daniel Thomas Jonas Gray Mike Gillislee FB Charles Clay WR Mike Wallace Brian Hartline Brandon Gibson Rishard Matthews TE Dustin Keller Michael Egnew Dion Sims OL Jon Martin Richie Incognito Mike Pouncey Lance Louis Tyson Clabo John Jerry Nate Garner Josh Samuda Dallas Thomas K Caleb Sturgis P Brandon Fields LS John Denney PR/KR Marcus Thigpen DL Cameron Wake Olivier Vernon Randy Starks Paul Soliai Kheeston Randall Jared Odrick Dion Jordan Derrick Shelby LB Koa Misi Philip Wheeler Dannell Ellerbe Jelani Jenkins Austin Spitler Jason Trusnik Jonathan Freeny DB Dmitri Patterson Nolan Carroll Brent Grimes Will Davis Richard Marshall Jamar Taylor Reshad Jones Chris Clemons Jimmy Wilson Don Jones Heavy on DBs and light on wideouts for me. I like she running backs as a unit, if not individually. I assume a fifth wideout will be carried and my guess is Don Jones or another bottom DB listed above will be lopped off. Ironically enough, the hardest one for me is Dan Carpenter as I simply don't trust Caleb Sturgis as our kicking option, but they aren't going to keep Carpenter and his price tag.
Devlin takes up a spot on the 53 roster, regardless if he is active or not. You can only dress 45 on game day though so most likely he isn't going to make that cut, barring an injury.
I thought this rule changed (last year maybe)? I seem to remember that you can dress 46 if you carry a 3rd QB. EDIT: looks like my memory was off. Seems that the 3rd QB rule was dropped altogether in 2011, but the active list was increased to 46, with no special requirements around QBs. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...arterback-rule-46-active-players-on-game-day/ Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
If we kept a 4th safety, I'd guess either McCray or Kovacs makes it before Jones. McCray may make over Wilson for that matter. Last year on a WR unit with marginal talent, we carried 6 in week 1. I think at least 5 is a definite and I don't see any way Bumphis doesn't make the team, unless he totally falls apart in the next 3 weeks. It is really early to say with much certainty though who all the backups will be.
hard to give up on Thigpen until we find someone that can return kicks like him. so far, I haven't seen it.
Looks alright by McCray makes roster over Kovacs. Tough call on some of position spots like 4/5 WR, 3/4 RB, etc as I really don't follow special teams to know who is rocking it out there...
Dont think Daniel Thomasl will be on the team,I believe they will trade him for whatever they can get for him.Id rather have Jonas Grey as our short yardage back.
Nice call Sam... I mostly agree. People are underestimating Thigpen, the guy is going to be a utility player. He can play running back and receiver, plus a good returner. JLane may knock someone off that list as well. Sunday he was making plays, and he knows the offense. Either Tyms or Bumphis make the team or PS.
Some tough decisions, that's for sure... In a WR heavy offense, I can't see us keeping only 4... Thiggy is an enigma at this point... We know what he can do, but he hasn't been on the field very much. Is that an indication that they are replacing him, or that they want to look at the younger guys ?? Lance Louis, while clearly at least equal to JJ and probably better needs to get on the field to make the team, however the same thing can be said about JJ... I don't know if Samuda is as good as some seem to think he is or is he just "not JJ" in many of the eyes of the fans ?? While the starters up and down the roster seem locked in everywhere but the OL. About the only question may be Patterson and Marshall battling it out. Could one of those guys be gone even tho we haven't seen what Taylor can do?? I'm too biased on Carroll...I just don't trust him...he may be better than Taylor at this point, but do you give up on him ?? My guess right now is like Paul said, the young guys make it, even if we haven't seen what they can do...
See? I don't buy the six wide receivers last year with less talent argument. I think because we didn't know what talent we had (or didn't have), they were forced to keep six. The emergence of Hartline and the signing of Wallace in the offseason, not only raises the talent level, but gives the staff an idea of what they have. I am sure they will roster five, but I only see four right now, that seem to have roster spots locked up. Bumphis is the leader in to clubhouse, but he shows a considerable lack of concentration having fumbled a punt return and tipping a pass that led to an interception. With the huge emphasis on turnovers this training camp, those miscues could cost him a job.
I'm not sure if Tyms has an practice squad eligibility but Bumphis certainly does. Just something to keep in the back of your mind .
I think it's possible for a 5th round pick to end up on the practice squad. 4th rounder, not so much, you're right.
Clay is solidly on the team IMO. Devlin takes up a spot on the 53. Side note.. if we were really in trouble cap wise, I'd dump Moore in favor of Devlin as the #2 in a heartbeat.
probable 53: (8/12/13) QB-3 Ryan Tannehill Matt Moore Pat Devlin HB-4 Lamar Miller Daniel Thomas (most experienced) Jonas Gray Mike Gillislee FB-1 Charles Clay (played FB before) WR-5 Mike Wallace Brian Hartline Brandon Gibson Chad Bumphis (will not be denied) Rishard Matthews TE-3 Dustin Keller Michael Egnew Dion Sims OL-9 Jon Martin Richie Incognito Mike Pouncey Lance Louis (starting LG) Tyson Clabo John Jerry Nate Garner Josh Samuda Dallas Thomas K-1 Caleb Sturgis P-1 Brandon Fields LS-1 John Denney PR/KR-1 Marcus Thigpen (a man of many talents) DL-8 Cameron Wake Olivier Vernon (will surprise) Randy Starks Paul Soliai Kheeston Randall Jared Odrick Dion Jordan Derrick Shelby LB-7 Koa Misi Philip Wheeler Dannell Ellerbe Jelani Jenkins Austin Spitler Jason Trusnik Jonathan Freeny DB-9 Brent Grimes Dmitri Patterson Nolan Carroll Will Davis Richard Marshall Jamar Taylor Reshad Jones Chris Clemons Jimmy Wilson
Mostly agree.. except: I don't think we keep Rodriguez. I think they let Clay lead block as an H-back and Sims as a TE, and ditch the FB completely. Jonas Gray can maybe try upback if we wanna give someone a short yardage power back carry. I think they keep Gillisslee or McNutt with that space (or Jelani) Doubt we go with only 5 CBs since Taylor has not been healthy and MArshall has fought injuries, while Grimes is returning from a major injury. I expect they actually cut Vaughn Martin (who has underperformed, imo) and keep another CB like RJ Stanford.
I'm not going to write out an entire one because it'll be 90% similarities, but I think a couple of considerations: I think they keep Miller/Thomas/Gray/Gillislee at RB Keller, Sims, Egnew, and Clay(FB) at TE I think they're going to err heavily on the side of keeping too many WRs with good performance. Wallace, Hartline, Gibson, Matthews, with either Tyms and Bumphis both making or battling for same spot I don't think Vaughn Martin makes the roster. Kheeston Randall has been better, and they instead go Soliai/Starks/Odrick/Randall and stash potentially both Robertson and Francis on the PS I think linebacker gets pared down a bit more than most lists, with one back-up for each position. Wheeler, Ellerbe, Misi, then Jenkins, Spitler, and Trusinik. Freeny is a bit of a hard cut, I think they need to look into the feasibility of someone else getting reps at MLB. I think there is a lot of flexibility to play with OLB/End rushers- Misi, Trusinik, Vernon, and Jordan have a degree of overlap as OLB/LBs. They are going to err on the side of caution with cornerback, with Grimes, Patterson, Marshall, Davis, Taylor, and Carroll sticking.
I think Vaughn Martin makes the roster. Judging by the ways they've been using him, I think they consider him a valuable reserve because of his versatility. I do agree they may err on the side of caution with six corners though because of Grimes' injury history and Jamar Taylor's missing half of camp.
Maybe I've not been paying appropriate attention but it seems as if he has been shifted rather than playing up to his versatility: Early on he was exclusively or near exclusively DE, was he exclusively DT the other night(I believe). That seems like they're looking for a spot rather than getting him reps in both spots. All in all, he's not really distinguishing himself either. I don't think you can put him better than 5th best at either position.
WR Hartline, Wallace, Gibson, Matthews, Bumphis, Thigpen OL Martin, Incognito, Pouncey, Samuda, Clabo, Garner, Thomas, Louis, Jerry TE Keller, Egnew, Sims RB/FB Miller, Thomas, Gillislee, Clay QB Tannehill, Devlin, Moore DL Wake, Odrick, Starks, Soliai, Vernon, Shelby, Randall, Jordan, Martin LB Misi, Ellerbe, Wheeler, Trusinik, Robinson, Jenkins CB Grimes, Marshall, Patterson, Taylor, Davis, Carroll S Clemons, Jones, Wilson, Kovacs K/P/ST: Sturgis, Fields, Denney Don't know who I'd select for the last three spots.
