I feel badly for Griese. Us old bastards remember what he did for this team. No matter how messed up he sounds on the air, it would be sacrilege for me to make any disparaging remarks about the man. I can remember him leading Purdue to an upset win in the Rose Bowl. I can remember the first game he took over as the starting QB, and it was like magic how passes were suddenly being completed on a regular basis. I wish Jack Clancy could have stayed healthy so he'd have still been around for those Super Bowl wins. He was Griese's go to guy when he first took over the reins of Miami's offense.

I do not agree. I saw him in some plays in the Jags game.

Bump looks better at this point in 2013, than Bess did at this point of the 2008 preseason, IMO.

I thought Jelani Jenkins did more bad than good in the Jags game.

Maybe so, but to say he has done "absolutely nothing" would be inaccurate IMO.

Bad would be our offensive lines pass blocking for first 3 series. Had it not been for 2 penalties we would have punted two more times. Tannehill looks shaken, but I have a feeling the coaches told him to hold back on showing his cards. The play calling is so basic that the coaches imo are not showing anything. Lets see what we do 3rd week (4th game for us) as the play calling should look a little more game ready during this game. Can't wait. This week is a scratch week as we shouldn't expect to see anything good again.

Not much good. No first downs on the first three offensive drives. Open JAX WRs...not every QB will suck as bad as Gabbert. The Oline in Miami is as bad as its been since 2007. Tannehill's development is stunted because there is no blocking and he can't get the ball in the hands of playmakers.

Of course, its pre season, but since that is all we have to judge this team on, it's how I'll judge them. Right now, this team is a 5-7 win team. I had high hopes in the offseason, but after two games, I have seen nothing to justify any optimism.

I think the biggest disappointment for me was I was certain that Tannehill was going to be the answer for this team. Now, I am not sure he is. Of course, as I said earlier, its hard to evaluate him with the offense being so bad, so who knows? But he is certainly no sure thing.

OL (all four positions besides C) need to be upgraded as well as the CB position. And also as we look forward, I think it might be necessary to look at QBs...

    Very disappointing overall.

While Samuda had a couple of bad pass protections, I saw nothing to get overly reactive to on his play. His run blocking looked pretty good. He let a guy get inside on him during a running play, but stayed with his man and rode him to the ground. He and Pouncey most definitely had a miscommunication in the first series, and his man applied pressure at least a couple of other times, but I have seen worse. I noticed after Marks put pressure on the inside again (Samuda did stay with him), Garner was put in the game. Marks got decent push on him too, and Garner is much bigger than Samuda. Give a little credit to Marks. From what I am watching, I would be more concerned by the backup linebackers than Samuda.

Wow...this Nellie Negative determination after two PS games...check that, actually one glorified practice and one PS game ?? Glad you're not coaching this team or you might just give up right now...

One thing about Philbin's teams with us so far, they do seem to come out of the gates rather slowly....We'll see, but it's way too early to determine the fate of this team....

I will say, however, that I was of the opinion after the draft, based on the personnel we had acquired, that we were a 6-8 win team, unless certain players actually take the next step...it's too soon to figure out of they are or not though so I'll reserve further judgement till we see the final 53 and we see what these key guys (Tanny, Martin, JJ/Louis, Keller, Miller, Any CB opposite Grimes, Clemons, Jordan, VO, etc....We just haven't seen enough yet to make any determination...

I like what I see from Robertson, the DT from Baylor. He and the "O" brothers seem to be good prospects. Spitler and Trusnik just look a step slow. Freeny and Kaddu just look faster, as does Jenkins. If I don't see more from Martin I would wonder if Robertson doesn't give him a run. Good depth to DL this year. Inexperienced depth at linebacker.
While a number of people have talked about potential guards to play the left or right, I have like what I have seen from Garner. He could be a fall back guy at guard or right tackle. Another guy I am watching this morning is Adams, the kid from Columbia. So in summary I like:

    Robertson, dt from Baylor
The "O" brothers from Fresno St. and Louisiana Lay.
    Garner
    Maybe Adams

I am going to watch Kovacs in the second half. As well as some of the young backers.

I want to see Kaddu step it up this year. He has to for the Dolphins to consider replacing Spitler and Trusnik, who have value on special teams.

2nd half offensive line effort not very good. I don't see Burden making the roster. Moore seemed to struggle with the wr corp. Tyms, McNutt and Fuller were in the most. Bumphis didn't play much prior to the 58 yarder from Sturgis.

Seems to me that if defensive coordinators don't account for Wallace, or don't have film of how he's used by the Dolphins because they haven't seen him used in the preseason, he may catch some balls in the beginning of the season before they figure out what to do about him. But he does need to get in sync with Tannehill. They may not be throwing to him because he doesn't have the system down pat yet.

I think there is just this theory that Tannehill and Wallace must find their timing in preseason, I just don't believe in it, your a Qb a and a receiver, if he's open throw it with what your instinct tells you, it's called football, in the regular season the scheme will have Tannehill and Wallace in position, just let it go.

Aaron Rodgers has historically had near perfect numbers during preseason. His back-ups also had pretty good numbers so the difference may be that Packers offense was highly established while Miami is still determining the parts and roles. Sherman's presser last Wednesday indicated the core offensive players with Gibson in the slot and Clay playing with Keller; and I expect the staff will increase reps between Tannehill and his key offensive weapons. With a week to prepare for the Houston and Tampa games plus their different style of defenses, it's likely Miami will game plan for each defense. Performance by Tannehill and company in these games should be a good barometer on how successful the team will be.

As for Wallace, I have a theory that his advisers, including his father, may be a bit more football savvy than as presented in the media. Perhaps, Gruden's football camp video of Tannehill has overly influenced me, but I keep seeing parallels to the Raiders. That team has had a number of speed receivers with long careers, which I assume occurred due to the receiver becoming more effective at using his speed to get open on intermediate routes. Similarly, I believe Wallace's team watched tape of Tannehill and Hartline and came to a conclusion that Mike could have a long career by playing outside receiver in Miami. The Wallace and Tannehill combo; however, will be more a work-in-progress as the cushion Mike receives will vary from week to week, whilst Hartline had run such routes for years with QBs that lack arm strength and accuracy to make it a productive play.

He must not have gotten the memo last year since he went 21-43 for 234 yds and 1 TD and 2 INTs. It does look like he was stellar in 2011 and 2010 preseason though (didn't check further than that).

Good stuff... Completely agree on point 1. On point 2, in one of the sideline throws that was broken up as Tannehill was scrambling to the sideline, I think he was expecting Clay to hook back to the ball ala Hartline, who has great sideline instincts. Instead Clay seems oblivious to the LB shadowing him, never changes his angle to the sideline and allows the LB to get inside and break up a potential catch. If Clay had turned back to the ball, that would have been a completion. I think this is what Tannehill expects of his receivers at these times, but that definitely needs to be communicated and coached, since it isn't happening and makes these throws ill-advised and risky.

Agree on the points about Vernon disappearing. I think the hype and noise about him being dominant in camp was too early for a fan favorite type of guy and clearly shows why we took Dion Jordan. As for Jon Martin, I think he is continuing to learn and improve. I like his chemistry with Cogs and even if he is doing it ugly, he is exceeding most of the negative expectations that were projected for him.

I didn't change my expectations from April to August...that was the point. Apparently the OP has changed his opinions of the team based on the two games played so far... The most important thing is we still have several questions that remain unanswered, although we are starting to get the picture now on some of them. But to come out and declare that because of one PS and one practice with another team that we suddenly suk is going overboard... Just the same as saying that because we beat down the Jags that we're suddenly a lock to make the playoffs would be...

I disagree. There has been nothing from our starting offensive unit that leads a logical thinker to believe this is more than a 7 win team. Nothing. Can it happen? Sure, it can. But that would have to be with GREAT improvement. I mean, JAX can win ten games, if they improve mightily in many areas. But not likely. Neither is it likely, based on what we've seen in Pre season to think the Dolphins will be better than 7-9.

I have no problem with anyone having faith (something based on something you havent seen). I just base my judgments on reality. Its just a different means of analysis.

So wait, let me get this straight. My post was a "negative Nancy determination after two PS games"; check that, after 2 1/2 weeks of camp and two preseason games....Yet you had predicted after the draft (before any mini camps, training camps, practices, or PS games) we would be one game better than I predicted. And thats not a "Nellie Negative"? ROFLMAO. This is classic.

I know absolutely that what we've seen from the team MAY or MAY NOT be the result. However, based on what WE HAVE seen, there is no reason, IMO, for optimism.

Although, more than likely he's not throwing to him because he has not been afforded the protection required to take a seven step drop and set his feet, and let it fly deep to Wallace. I think Wallace will see less balls early in the season until this OL figures how to effectively pass protect. Keep in mind, we aren't seeing elaborate blitzes or stunt packages, or anything exotic. Our guys are getting whipped regularly on one-one matchups.

Mike Wallace is going to have a very limited role in this offense; or certainly a far different role than we envisioned if we don't figure out how to protect the QB.

I have changed my expectations...and I caveated that change by saying "its only preseason, and thats all we have to go on"...If we shouldnt' make any determinations on Preseason or training camp, then why come here and posit ideas at all?

I know its early. I know it "COULD BE" meaningless. But right now, I see Cleveland getting 5 sacks on this Oline in our first game.

I reviewed Cleveland's 1st string D against the Rams' 1st string O. I have to say...I'm a little concerned. I knew they were good on the D-Line but Jabaal Sheard looked even a little better than I thought, and he was already a guy I've always had a higher opinion of than most. But then again it could've just been another data point that points to Jake Long sliding into an early retirement. Big Jake got the job done against Sheard, he gave Sam Bradford about 2.7 to 3.0 seconds to throw the ball on each of those occasions he had trouble with Sheard, but only JUST. If Bradford had held onto the ball any longer Sheard has hands on him several times. Jabaal looks lighter than I remember, more explosive.

The reason we argue about Jonathan Martin so much is because there's a lot at stake. We literally JUST caught a glimpse of what is at stake the other night. Was the pressure coming from Jon Martin's side? No. However the pressure WAS coming, and it prevented the offense from functioning, and prevented new $60 million acquisition Mike Wallace from catching a single ball. I speculated that perhaps Miami just wasn't showing their cards because they didn't make an effort to get him the ball despite the shell coverage, and then a poster here pointed out that after the game in his interview Tannehill expressly said they did have several calls to get him the ball but the protection wasn't there.

That's what is at stake here. You don't want a minus in pass protection to completely nullify the benefit you could get from adding a $60 million weapon to your offense. And Jonathan Martin will face Jabaal Sheard, Paul Kruger, Barkevious Mingo, Bjoern Werner, Robert Mathis, Osi Umenyiora, Will Smith, Terrell Suggs, Pernell McPhee, Mario Williams, Chandler Jones, Michael Johnson, James Harrison, Da'Quan Bowers, Adrian Clayborn, Dwight Freeney, Greg Hardy, Antwan Barnes, Quinton Coples, Jarvis Jones, Chandler Jones (again), Mario Williams (again) and Antwan Barnes/Quinton Coples (again). That's the full accounting of the year for him and it's no cake walk.

That's not Kyle Wilber and Andre Branch. And Jason Babin would rank amongst the worst of those guys.

So there's a lot at stake if the pass protection isn't sound.

Chad Bumphis only had 7 snaps during the Jacksonville game. I knew it had to be low but that's real low. Lowest on the offense.

On the other hand he led all WRs in snaps during the Hall of Fame game. So it's probably just being fair and giving others their chance at the bat.

However, I find it significant that despite only being around on 5 pass plays, quarterbacks looked for him TWICE and he caught both balls and made good things happen. He produced a 23 yard catch on 2nd & 10, and on a 3rd & 2 they looked to him to be the chain mover, and even though the defender was on him and the ball was poorly placed, he moved the chains.

Considering the quality of our reserve LBs, his draft status could likely earn him a "redshirt" year as a reserve. The coaches seem to love Trusnik though, and Spitler has been sound on STs, so we'll see. If it were me, I'd keep Robinson, Jenkins, Kaddu and Freeny, with M. Clay on the practice squad.

It seems to me that they may already have made a decision on Bumphis, so no need to overuse him. They do need to know though if any of the other WRs are good enough to be the 5th or 6th ones.

I agree with this. However, my main concerns about who to worry about are still in transition. For all intents and purposes, Jon Martin has done his job in the first 2 PS games and has done well against lower competition. I will be a little worried when he goes up against those cats whom you listed for 4 quarters. But, the right side of the line has become a little concerning. Samuda and Clabo took turns looking mediocre in the first quarter of the Jags game. Samuda was actually taken out after several bad plays. Not sure if that was because of the hand injury or what. Clabo also just looked average. Wallace actually would have been open deep a couple of times, but Tannehill simply did not have the time to get him the ball. CK is right on target about Wallace not being the receiver this team needs him to be if the oline doesn't get better. They simply have to improve.

Here's the thing, people are going to say it's preseason, Tyson Clabo getting whipped doesn't matter...he's been good all through camp.

The problem with that is the very opposite is true of Jon Martin. He's been getting whipped all through camp but has put together a good string of 19 pass plays in the preseason against Kyle Wilber, Andre Branch and Jason Babin. So if Clabo's struggling in limited reps isn't anything to worry about then Martin's not struggling in limited reps shouldn't be anything to suddenly give us confidence, either.

I also really like the formations that the offense uses. I don't see any room for Lane or Erod on the team. The ability to put keller or clay at fb enable them to place the top 3 receivers on the field as well as an h-back. If they are ever able to effectively run out of this formation, and the oline could actually improve to being adequate, the passing game could really take off. I'm hoping for the best.

This is true. I am just hoping that they choose a starting RG soon, so he and Clabo can develop some chemistry for the regular season. I think you or someone stated it earlier, but it looks like some of the problem on the right side is communication on the handoff of the dlineman in the zbs. Hopefully some experience playing with the guy beside you will alleviate some of that. In the passing game, that is.
