As of yesterday that's what he was saying about Dion, that's the reason why it was fresh..

Back on topic, don't want CK to have a conniption.

His change of direction Pod, he's going to get so many garbage sacks ya know?, dude just leaps in all directions, man did I love him lining up over center, dropping, then reading that sh&$ perfectly...lot goin on there that just came naturally, I don't know if he will have the intellect of a JT but if he does, man

OMFG THIS IS CRAZY!!! Off topic, but what do I need to do to get my return/enter keys to work on this forum?!?!?!?!?! Works everywhere else online and off, but for some reason I must be missing something VERY simple (and I'm gonna feel like an idiot once I get it figured out). Anybody?

He looked much more natural in a three point stance than I expected. And looked better playing out of that down DE position in the HoF game than on his Oregon film.

He has been working on his body and his technique, imo.

This is a great problem to have but, with Shelby emerging, Dion's immense potential, and OV being much improved we suddenly have three capable pressure guys (it seems) for one RDE spot.

How will the coaches get all these guys snaps?

(Without taking Wake off the field)

You made that? Loved it if so!

Only thing that would make it better would be the commentary from the announcers when they are discussing him.

Awesome job man. Thanks for taking the time to do that!

You can assume they'll be rotation, and that Dion Jordan will get worked in as a linebacker.

Yeah, I just started clipping videos a few weeks ago and really liked it so I plan on doing a lot more with it.

I removed audio just in case it violates copyright. I'll include it next week though just to test it out. If nothing happens then going forward I'll leave the audio in.

Thanks, glad people are liking it.

Maybe its just me, but on that play where Bumphis gave up some yards to sneak it outside and get the first down I just didn't like the way he moved out there with the ball in his hands. He looked so rigid and tentative. He just didn't look fluid at all while moving. It was like someone grabbed some accountant out of the stands and threw him on the field.

But it may have just been the camera angle or something. I could be totally wrong.

DJ is not an every down player yet, he was stood up by a TE on the TD run, and they ran right at him, this is what I was worried about with him at DE, he was blocked quite a bit in college by TEs, he has a high center of gravity and it's easy to get under his pads. He did a decent job against back ups getting after the passer but he's a liability in the run game right now, as a DE you simply cannot get blocked like that by a TE, the problem is, the Cowboys scouted that about him, they would never have tried that with Wake, Odrick, Vernon or Shelby, you can't block them with a TE on a run play to their side, play would be blown up in the back field, truth is 2 TEs could not stop Wake or Odrick on that play. Maybe DJ ends up at LB, DJ, Ellerbe, Wheeler? or maybe at MLB? Ellerbe, DJ, Wheeler?

Great find, thank you. You have to like Jordan's size, but even more so his combination of sheer strength, quickness and speed- the earlier reports on him from CK & others as being strong/way stronger than Damontre Moore were spot on. The bull rush on the first play of the clip- outstanding, he walks the LT (granted Darrion Weems, not Tyron Smith) right back to the QB. A couple of plays in (goal line) he stands up his man at the LOS and sheds him/gets to #87 and shoves him right into the backfield, with force. It happened so quick I couldn't see it until the slo-mo from a better angle. Dude is fast and quick, can back pedal, drop in coverage and attack. I liked him coming out of the draft but surely didn't love him. That being said, he's growing on me and has the makings of an excellent joker/attack player.

But- the same thing is still bothering me that irked me before the draft- he gets tangled way too often with OTs, is not good at shedding them and going about his business, ie attacking the Quarterback. In my mind that's his biggest weakness, and specifically what is boils down to is poor hand use.

Remember Andre Tippett? On top of his size, strength and speed what he had was absolutely wicked hand use and knowledge of how to use leverage that he learned in no small part from his extensive martial arts training. He knocked LTs hands away, got them off balance and destroyed them on his way to opposing QBs, and actually on his way to the Hall of Fame.

Jordan needs a BIG dose of that, and maybe some martial arts training would help, just a guess. He shows knowledge of how to use his hands and leverage against the run, but as a passer rusher... not so much. Evidence of this is at 2:15 in your clip- look at the slo-mo of the play and how absolutely weak he is playing with his right hand, and not all that much better with his left hand. What is he doing? He's not even trying to rip the LTs arms out of the way or get him off balance- his arm use is absolutely pathetic and imo that's his biggest weakness, one that he better work on if he is to become the player and pass rusher that we all want him to be.

Get this guy some arm use training, martial arts training, whatever- and the sky's the limit. He got ridden outside WAY too often in college not because he's weak, but because his arm use while pass rushing is so bad. Correct that and you have one heck of a player, otherwise he's showing signs of becoming a beast. Btw I'm assuming that at this point his shoulder is ok and is not a significant issue in the subject of his hand use, or lack thereof.

It is the kind of play where if you do give ground to gain extra yardage and in this case a 1st down, you better be right. I was impressed with him in that his calculations on the fly were correct. He did not however have enough yardage before he gave ground though, so it really was his only choice. Bess would often make a catch just at or just past the sticks and all he had to do was sit down, and it would have been a fresh set of downs, but he'd try to get creative, give up a yard or two, and not be fast enough to get back past the sticks and we'd end up with it being 4th down.

I didn't see anything about Bump's movement on that play that made me think of him being someone they just grabbed out of the stands. :) He is one tough little dude, I like him, and of the UDFA's he is the one with the best chance to make the team.

If it makes you feel better... after practice on the first day of practice that he was cleared for contact... they coaches were working with him off to the side on that very thing... his hand use. So, the coaches are targeting that it appears. Lets hope that they can help him improve.

It does, thank you. Wax on, wax off, whatever works. Jordan is relatively thin, but he has some guns, good sized and muscular arms. He has to learn how to use them effectively- he is so bad at fending off and shedding OT's while rushing the passer (in stark contrast to the rest of his outstanding game) and I can't figure out why.

Look at the play at :07 in the clip below- Jordan uses strength, leverage and his powerful arms to rip a player sideways to the ground on a running play, Andre Tippett style. The defender is just dominated and dismissed- it's beautiful. The question is, why doesn't he do more of this while rushing the passer? His hand use is so passive during his pass rush, I just can't figure it out. It seems like learned behavior (for reasons unknown) that has to be unlearned and he has to be retrained to rip OL out of the way, and he can do it. What a talented player, I hope that Jordan and the coaching staff can get it done.

I think its the standard case of being such an athletic freak in college that the coaches didn't bother with technique since he was already so effective. Plus he did a lot of coverage.

After learning Jordan's story, I'm 100% convinced he won't have any problems learning and developing. The kid has a ridiculous drive and passion for football. He is special.

I try not to jump to conclusions too early, but what he has is not taught its inherent. And humans that size with that kind of agility just don't fail.

I'll jump on the overreacting bus...DJ will have 12-14 sacks this year....and the first time he plows through and DESTROYS Tom Brady maybe then we will applaud the F.O for obtaining such a dominant force.

I'd normally be with you, but in this case:

    1) His physical gifts are legit. I know that never solely translates into success, because you need drive and the mental make up which leads to.....
    2) His drive and determination are off the charts. He is a supremely driven man based on the reports of when he was burned and how he came back from that.
    3) His mental make up is rock solid. He is a leader on and off the field. He's inspired an entire town and even helped fellow teammates right their lives.

I just don't see (outside of injury) a guy like that doesn't excel.

I like what he showed. But being honest it wasn't a whole lot different from him in college. I don't know that pass rush success against Darrion Weems is a proxy for pass rush success against Joe Thomas.

Derrick Shelby actually had even more pass rush success than Jordan all told, and if we're all over Jordan as about to be some force in the league because of how well he rushed against Darrion Weems then we ought be equally pumped about Derrick Shelby's ascendence to stardom based on how well he rushed Edawn Coughman.

It's a nice step, something to be positive about. But the road in front of both players is still long and winding.

Then again, Shelby did not drop back to play MLB and he was being pinned inside relatively easily on toss plays to his side.

I don't understand this drive of yours to try and quash or temper enthusiasm for a player by also misrepresenting what people are saying.

You've either flat out said or alluded to, that people shouldn't be surprised by Jordan's showing in the HoF game, when nobody was surprised. We are just elated that in his first bit of live action he had a good showing, indicating there's hope his talents (that no one is surprised about) may make the jump to the pros.

Its also great Shelby showed what he did, but few are going to be more excited about an undrafted 2nd year player than the #3 draft pick rookie coming off an injury and less camp time.

Actually Deej, I'm not, for me that is low hanging fruit, what I want to see is a JT style stiff arm/foot work for the sack, not just rely on his athleticism as when you face elite LT's they can handle a speed rush rather well...you need a counter move as well.

I understand where your coming from, but he did it twice in this game, and the feet are a part of the deeks ( to het past your defender both feet and head work harmoniously), and they were both executed perfectly to beat the tackle and the double team, just a part of the repertoire, it shows me he's confident, if he can deek to get the tackle off balance he then can finish with power...he's got the arms and leverage, and large hands to execute that stiff arm you speak of..

He's got cam wake, but I would also like to see JT reach out to this kid, or vice versa, and have him show Dio the finer points.

How did he look compared to Shelby's first preseason game? I cannot remember. Box score had him with 2 tackles, but I don't remember if he had pressures like DJ did.

Im really excited about our pass rush this yr. Between Wake flushing qbs out of the pocket, DJ doesn't have to necessarily beat his man everytime. Also with Starks and Odrick applying the occasional pressures and our new quick lbs blitzing at times, it feels like DJ may have the opportunity to have a few cleanup sacks. I like the group that they have put together on D. Coyle also likes to blitz Reshad Jones. The pressure can come from several areas. Anyways, I like the potential that he brings. They rushed Misi a lot in passing situations and although he works really hard, Jordan will probably be much more effective. Also, if Vernon and Shelby continue to develop that makes this unit super deep. Way more than in recent yrs.

I was impressed with the quick change of direction when he dropped back into coverage to make a nice open field tackle on the RB.

Then again he made that play at Oregon so not sure why I care. :shifty:

I do like Dio, kinda rolls off the tongue..

Fun, hell yeah, and I will say it again, I think we saw on that drop and tackle why we shouldn't pigeon hole this dude into one position..he can make impact plays with his length, explosive COD, and tackling ability protecting that blood zone and seam..good luck trying to float a pass over the linebacker in this case..

Fun is watching him execute an alligator tackle on that back, wrapped the legs and twisted his opponent, popped right back up on two feet.

Teach him everything, hes the "Jack" player that saban envisioned when he coined the phrase, as in Jack of all trades..Defensive end..outside linebacker, corner ..I just happen to think the term jack of all trades master at none will not apply in this case..

"JACK this position is unique to Nick Sabans particular brand of the 3-4. This player is a hybrid linebacker/defensive end. He will play at times off of the line of scrimmage, lined up like a true outside linebacker, but more often he will play on the line of scrimmage, with his hand on the ground like a defensive end. He will typically line up outside the tackle box, alongside the defensive end that is inside the tackle. He will blitz, he will drop back in coverage. Ideally this is the guy who is your playmaker on the outside."
