  3. I hate to say but I can see them having a 7-9 season again. A lot depends on RTs performance this year.

Interesting that you bring up Phil Wheeler. I thought most agreed he had a rough outing especially in coverage.

I don't understand why people feel the need to talk down to other people just for sharing their opinion. If it's negative or positive, whatever, but everyone doesn't need to react to it like the person is the stupidest stupidhead in the history of stupid.

This game was nothing more than a way to get a look at some bubble players and get younger guys some experience. No real game plans. No game plan practicing etc.

I dunno what you saw but I saw a guy with tremedous sideline to sideline speed for a ILB and a guy that jammed blocks and played off them well and was ready to stick his nose into a tackle. A tough guy with speed and a complete keeper.

He might lead this defense in tackles - Top 3 for sure.

Pathetic outing. I'm still waiting for some of the roster player to show they can actually play professionally. Bright spots, Egnew and Keenan Davis.

Preseason W-L actually has a negative correlation to regular season W-L, so this game could be viewed as a positive.

Spare me the fake outrage. Also the reason I said thanks is that I get tired of knee jerk overreacters like you. "Omg, Miller fumbled the ball in the first preseason game, he sucks! Omg Tannehill threw two bad passes, he sucks!" They played two series if that and you are calling it a losing season. A game where our two starting Wrs and most of the defensive line didn't even play. Ellerbe didn't play. Get a clue.

On closer viewing of the replay of Chad Bumphis' drop which led to a pick-6, some notes:

    1. The main issue was the miscommunication, not the drop. Chad Bumphis was crossing the middle and tried to throttle down into the hole between the zones, thinking he'd be on the same page with Matt Moore. He wasn't. Moore threw it as if he'd run through the catch at full speed, even though Holloman was waiting on the left side. When Chad saw how Matt threw the ball, there was an "oh sh-t" moment and he lunged as far as he could to try and catch up with it to secure it, but it was just a little too high and out of reach for a clean catch. This is not necessarily a mistake for either player, it's chemistry you can only get with time and reps. Chad Bumphis has probably been way down the depth chart most of his time with the Dolphins, and he's new. He and Moore probably don't have good chemistry or understanding of each other yet.

    2. DeVonte Holloman made a really nice play and you can see that this guy could make some noise at the NFL level. He's a former safety/corner and plays like it at times.

He threw two bad ones to McNutt and also had to scramble for a 1 yard gain when he held the ball too long and didn't find anyone to throw to. I didn't see the coaches film of that play, but I thought Dustin Keller looked very open over the middle.

Let's call it for what it is. Ryan Tannehill looked rusty and not ready to start the game. Maybe he was perturbed by the fumbled exchange at the beginning which wasn't really his fault. I don't know. But it took a little bit of time for him to get settled and then he got taken out of the game the first time he made a 1st down.

I try to ignore the HOF game every year..but some things stood out.

Dallas Thomas. whoa. I like George Selvie. Namely because I am stubborn, and I wanted him for the Dolphins coming out of USF. But..he is just "a guy". Well, he looked like a cross between Lawrence Taylor, Demarcus Ware and Cam Wake in that game. A bad sign.

Lamar Miller. Dumb fumble. But his two carries where things of beauty.

    Tannehill looked god awful.

Derrick Shelby. Yawn. Made plays, but I don;t ignore how soft he was on two positive runs by Dallas early on.

The collection of Safeties we have behind our two biggest guns, looked like trash.

Michael Egnew. Yawn. Nothing special. He caught the ball, perfectly thrown to him on soft coverages. I guess I should cream myself. He still has a TON to prove.

The play calling was passive, and did not show me a proclivity for aggression. A bad sign.

after going back and looking at the Jonas Gray 29 yard run. like to point out how well that was blocked on the right side. Starting with #67 McDonald at right tackle, gets a pancake sealing the edge wonderfully. #62 comes off his double team block at RG with the C and gets to the second level. It wasn't perfect but it got the job done. Then #3 Keenan Davis crashes down the line of scrimmage to pick off more players. Lastly, #48 Evan Rodriguez essentially has nobody to block until he gets well beyond the LOS and runs with Gray as his bodyguard half way down the field. Beautiful running play from all facets. I even think Daniel Thomas could have got a first down on that.

Both passes to McNutt were poor and behind him. A receiver shouldn't have to adjust his body like that on a slant or a screen (it appeared to be a designated screen to me at least).

I don't expect this to be a reoccurring problem for Tannehill but he had a bad showing IMO. Luckily it was the first preseason game and he was playing with his #3 and #4/5 receiver.

It was a really well blocked play. I thought the best blocking job for that play went to Andrew McDonald, who surprised me. Might have to revisit him in the film view a little bit on him. I know he's athletic and he's stood out to me in preseason before, though only in very short spurts.

I'm really hoping Lee Robinson can replace Austin Spitler as our main backup inside linebacker. Spitler really gets blocked out on that 25 yard run by Tanner in the second quarter (the one where Trusnik, another guy on my hit list and Jimmy Wilson miss tackles).

I agree with you. On bang-bang plays, ball placement is of the highest priority because the receiver has virtually no time to adjust to the ball's flight in the air. One of those plays appeared to be a 1 step drop. That's a tough throw to make, and a tough catch to make if the throw is off by even a little bit. I really don't like those plays in the playbook to be honest. They're GREAT if you've got the execution down between the QB and WR, but it's so incredibly difficult to execute consistently with the precision needed that I would swear most of those throws end up caroming off the receiver's hands and that to me is more danger than it's worth.

A couple of issues with this. If Derrick Shelby was a yawn then Dion Jordan was as well. And most people are really giddy about what Dion showed.

Also, if those two were yawns then so was Lamar Miller, who fumbled the football and then ran through two paved highways.

I think even objective fans of other teams would've watched last night and come out with positive things to say about Michael Egnew.

I'm just trying to get a feel for your threshold on what is or isn't significant enough to be considered a positive. If Shelby and Egnew don't count then I'm not sure who does. Chad Bumphis? If even he doesn't count then clearly you're not going to find a single positive from last night. Which is OK, your prerogative, but I tend to watch those games looking for what I can glean about the bottom of the roster and to that end I thought there were positives to be noted.

There is a different standard for Dion Jordan and Shelby. Shelby has a larger threshold to meet, because we EXPECT Dion Jordan to be good to great. Shelby is trying to crack the rotation.

Lamar Miller had a good rookie year, and expectations are high. One fumble doesn't change either of those facts. His two runs, were what was expected, and he met the expectation.

Michael Egnew looks competent for the first time in 2 seasons, and I am supposed to ignore his draft status and his bust of a rookie year? Keller and Clay are better as of now, so why get excited about a 3rd TE?

and Chad Bumphis looked slow to me, and once again..when we field "our team"..the best he can hope for is the 4th spot and let's face it..that is gonna be a chore for him as well.

I just didn't see anybody move themselves from "bottom of the roster hopeful" to contributor, and there was opportunity.

    Here were the opportunities:

Dallas Thomas could have dominated Selvie.

Shelby could have played those two runs better, with more physicality. He drops his left shoulder and extends his arm, he might even get a holding call. But, no. He just got blocked.

Egnew..well, I am just in wait and see mode after his disappointing rookie year.

The receivers..they don't really matter, although you want one of them to push Gibson for playing time. I don't think any of them really distinguished themselves.

That had more to do with it being the HOF game than anything else.

Aggression as far action, not down and distance.

I think all the players got a feel for a real game and the next time will show what they're really made out of. This was the first time some of them played at this level. With some good film work and coaching, we'll really see how they play on Friday.

First off are you really sure that you can recall Michael Egnew ever looking NOT competent, during a game? Be careful with that one. Most people have manufactured memories of things that didn't really happen. His greatest crime over the two years you speak of (and let's be honest we're talking one year because this is the first we've seen him since that year) is just that he never got playing time and keeps having teammates talk sh-t about him to the papers. That's not good, but let's not confuse it with him actually going out there and playing bad football.

Chad Bumphis looked like he should be the team's slot receiver. So yeah that's a positive to me.

I disagree with the threshold on Derrick Shelby being such to where he can successfully beat the pants off the offensive tackles at least three times last night in limited opportunities, and look good on other plays, get two sacks, and we're sitting here talking about how on two plays he didn't quite do all that he could have against the run. The definition of nitpicking, to me.

Egnew...Tampa Bay game last year? Semi-competent. That one? I really struggle to remember when he made me say "oh..there it is."

As far as Bumphis, that performance was not enough to forget the money and investment we made in Gibson. (Investment as in, we traded a bonafide top performing slot receiver in Bess)

In the Tampa Bay game he had literally the 2nd biggest catch any tight end made for the Miami Dolphins all year, regular season and preseason included. Only Fasano's diving catch in the end zone was a bigger play.

Does it have to be, in order to be noted as a positive?
