Two things I wonder about immediately: 1. Did he leave because his position may have been directly tied to Ireland's? Or did he believe his work is done here? 2. Whose taking his place? I guess Ill really figure out how I feel about this once I see who his replacement is. If I feel his replacement is an upgrade I wont be upset.
Shoot, you beat me by a couple of minutes. As I said a while ago, Mike Dee appears to be a failed experiment for Miami.
Armando has some more information. http://miamiherald.typepad.com/dolp...eo-mike-dee-leaving-dolphins-for-new-job.html
Just to be clear, I doubt he was fired or told to leave. But I do think there's a mutual aspect to this decision.
The business side of the Dolphins. The stadium deal and their strategies for getting that done. Winning Super Bowl bids. Business ventures.
Well, he didn't seem to break anything while he was here. More of a baseball guy anyway, we got him from the BoSox right?
Right, but how are we judging his performance on the business side of those ventures? Did he do a good job with his responsibilities for the stadium deal? I think his position is one where we really know very little about what he is doing. There is so much involved with the business side of a sports team.
Here's just some of the things that have happened since Mike Dee took over: 1. Orange Carpet 2. T-Pain song 3. Attendance falls to lows 4. Local television ratings fall to lows 5. Gator Day on the day Tim Tebow is quarterbacking the opposing team 6. Failed Super Bowl presentations 7. Botched proposal for stadium improvements funding I'm not painting the guy as the anti-Christ or anything. I'm sure some of that wasn't his fault. But it hasn't been a good run.
Also, and anyone can feel free to actually look this stuff up as I don't have the time or patience, but I've seen some suggestions that the Dolphins' handling of the stadium funding thing was less than deft. They don't want a vote, then suddenly they do want a vote, not getting things done in time to ensure a proper vote, etc. I mean you can blame all of this stuff on Steve Ross but Mike Dee was supposed to be the guy spearheading all of this and making sure it goes down as smoothly and effectively as possible. Whatever happened, however you want to place the blame whether it be on Will Weatherford or others, it did not go down smoothly or effectively and Steve Ross lost millions on a vote that never even happened, and that all indications are he would have lost even if it had happened.
Based on what? You think Gator Day was Jeff Ireland's or Joe Philbin's idea? You think they were the ones spearheading the process for getting public funding for the stadium?
This is why I love twitter. People recounting various epic fails that had to fall under Dee's purview. Among the ones just brought up was that ridiculous half time contest where they were going to have normal people try and kick a 50 yard field goal or something like that and if they did it they won a big prize. Which is crazy because there are still NFL place kickers out there that you don't trust to try and make 50 yard field goals. The Dolphins had to nix the idea before it happened because of the idea being so obviously fail.
These are all pretty isolated and random issues. I think its pretty ridiculous to base an evaluation of the CEO on Gator Day or the orange-carpet stuff. JMO.
I really would be willing to bet that there's an understanding between Steve Ross and the head hunting firm he hired (Turnkey) that a lot of their attention will be focused on Carl Peterson. Carl is already business partners with Steve Ross on the FanVision thing. He is the Chairman of USA Football and was placed there by Roger Goodell himself in June 2009. In Kansas City, Carl always had a reputation for being much stronger on the business side of things than he was on the personnel side. I bet Ross would have hired Carl already, right away in 2009, if Bill Parcells had not basically said that if that guy even shows up in the building then I walk.
Really? These are things that are/were known NATIONALLY as sources of embarrassment for the Miami Dolphins.
Yes, they were embarrassing. Its embarrassing for Apple when a Foxcon worker commits suicide. But those are only a small part of whats actually happening on the business side. If you want to evaluate the CEO, I have a hard time taking that evaluation seriously unless someone actually has access to the books.
There's also the mishandling of the logo change complete with leaks that the Dolphins are actually suing people over they're so upset.
Anything that hurts the brand nationally, hurts your reputation as the CEO of the business side of the Dolphins. Sorry if you don't agree, but it's true. It was under Dee's leadership that Steve Ross developed this whole reputation in the first place for caring more about the glitz and glamor stuff than about football, and that's an image that has stuck...NATIONALLY. But...good job Mike Dee?
I never disagreed that they didn't hurt his reputation. I'm saying we are only privy to a very small amount of information, and nobody can make an informed opinion on how good of a job Dee did.
i can´t remember exactly what it was but didn´t he had a strange remark about a topic i cant remember right now, maybe it was after the stadium renovation failed ? hmm...damn can´t remember
Good riddance. Dee did not understand the Miami market, nor did he seem to make the effort to do so. The business has not improved under his watch. Gator Day was Nat Moore's idea. Mike Dee asked UM if they wanted to be involved, and UM said no. The part where Mike Dee's bad judgment enters in: after UM said no, he should have killed the idea. Instead, he went forward with it. The small amount of information we are privy to is generally referred to as "results". You don't need to work for the Dolphins to see the end results of Mike Dee's work.
Mike Dee said we were operating at a loss. http://www.miamiherald.com/2013/04/10/3336415/debt-stadium-costs-to-hand-miami.html
Right, but that doesn't really necessarily reflect on Mike Dee. A lot of the team's financial issues are because of debt incurred way before Dee was ever around. Now I'm certainly not saying Mike Dee did a good job. But his responsibilities include everything from the promotional stuff being cited here all the way to the operating of concessions, parking, etc. Nobody has a clue whether Ross increased their margins on concessions, or reduced overhead expenses for ushers. We are just basing our opinions on a few issues that are public.
Not sure about all those, but attendance is low for one reason and one reason only and that's not necessarily Dee's fault....Attendance is low because the franchise is not winning, period. If the Fins begin to win, the fans will come...
I dont care he is leaving, he can make it up to me by trading Chase Headley to the Yanks for a Single A prospect....
