I'm not sure I can agree on Cam Wake being so undervalued when he's actively considered a premier player in this league.

Was Brock Marion overrated, or underrated? I find that to be a fascinating question.

The dude went to three Pro Bowls for the Miami Dolphins at safety. That's as many Pro Bowls as Dick Anderson, Nick Buoniconti (counting only his years with Miami), Mercury Morris, Keith Sims or Mark Duper. That's as many Pro Bowl appearances as Doug Betters, Kim Bokamper and A.J. Duhe combined.

So in one way, you could say that he was overrated...he was more recognized than his play on the field actually deserved.

But I kind of see it the other way. The dude never gets mentioned, ever...as being among Dolphins greats on defense or on the team period. Patrick Surtain went to just as many Pro Bowls as Brock Marion, and played in the same era for the Dolphins defense. He gets talked about, usually with Sam Madison together as a pair, representing an era of Dolphins defense. Brock Marion gets nothing. Gets into as many Pro Bowls as Dick Anderson, Nick Buoniconti or Mark Duper and he gets no love.

The other guy that's like that is Bryan Cox. He's another three time Pro Bowler for the Miami Dolphins. But for some reason when talking about Dolphin greats at middle linebacker it's John Offerdahl to Zach Thomas. No mention of the in-between where Bryan Cox manned the middle and went to three Pro Bowls.

Actually I think Rob Konrad was overated. So much ink for so little performance.

Most of the underated have been talked about ad infinitum .Players like Zach Thomas,Manny Fernandez ,Bob Kuchenberg. They may be underappreciated but they are still well known and they are heroes in Dolphin fans minds.

So I am going to pick someone most of you probably have never heard of .

Mike Kolen LB better known as Captain Crunch because of his hard hitting style. You could hear his hits up in the bleachers. He started as a LB in that perfect season in 1972 .He was a 12th round pick in 1970 and he had to struggle to make the team .He even had to play as a scrub during the first strike shortened season .
    ,
But eventually he won the coaches and teammates and fans hearts and respect as he played 8 seasons with the Dolphins during the glory years. To me he reminds me of another big hitter although he was not as talented, John Offerdahl.

And thats why he is not well known :wink2:.The famous Sea of Hands game when he could have prevented a miracle game winning TD.
Still he was in position to do so .He was a LB and a DB should have been in position to knock that ball down...not a LB .

John Denney. 8 years of money snaps, 2 Pro Bowls and the average fan has zero clue he is on the team.

I'd have to say my favorite Dolphin of all time is highly underrated outside Phins circles, and even inside some, Jim "Crash" Jensen. I have a very hard time thinking of a player that was more entertaining, uber talented or not, than Crash. WR, QB, RB, C, whatever...he was game.

    Back in Miami
    Underrated:
Jon Giesler OT. Rarely gets credit for how good he was and how he toughed it out through a lot of pain at the end of his career.
Tim Bowens Guy was a rock in the middle.

    Overrated:
Tony Nathan Slow plodding RB that was solid but not at all as dynamic as some Phin fans like to make him out to be.
Jay Fiedler: Guy that never should have been a starting QB in the NFL. Took advantage of an idiot named Wanny's talent assessment and his ego that would not let him move on once it was obvious this was a poor choice. Rode the coattails of a championship caliber defense to a winning career record as a starter.

Jmo, Jake doesn't belong in the great class..not with a couple of injury plagued years on a rookie contract who then bolted for another team after being the first overall..I consider that a failure for the franchise.

I put Cam Wake on underrated because of the insult that is the top 100. He was what, in the 90s? Cant remember, thats how bad it is. Alot of people still don't know his name and he is one of the top 3 pass rushers the last 4 years. underrated.

Tough call on underrated and overrated.

I also don't put much stock in Pro Bowls because once in one or if you put up some stats - without players / fans really seeing a lot of games - you have a good chance of getting there.

Marion had three good seasons but also played with two great DBs imo - Madison and Surtain and I think that caused the ball to be sent his way a bit more which opened the door for more INTs for him. I think those CBs were both phenomenal players - especially Surtain. I'd lean a bit more overrated or just about right where he is.

If anything, of that group of those DBs of that era - I'd say Surtain is the most underrated as far as the NFL community is concerned.

I really don't think there are many Dolphins that have been historically overrated - largely because they have gotten so little respect through the years from the NFL.

The other challenge with over-rated / underrated is whether its Dolphin fans or the national media. Those can be two different things.

    Overrated:

    1. Channing Crowder - always got more pub than I thought he deserved and I think his tackle rate was deceptive (other than 1 or 2 games) - often getting in well downfield rather than in the backfield.

    2. Brian Cox - A home fan fav (in part from his trash talk ability and in part because of his flipping off the Bills fans - that was pretty funny if poor taste). He had a phenomenal 2nd year (14 sacks) but I think he mostly rested on that year and the rest of his career it was more talk than walk (esp. after his 3rd season productivity went way down).

    3. OJ McDuffie - a fan favorite, and got pub as the #1 WR target for Marino for a while after the Marks bros were gone, but given his being a first round pick I never thought he lived up to that; he was not an explosive player and ultimately was disappointing for the popularity (though he had some decent seasons and was a solid player). He never approached the level of a Clayton.

Underrated (I think there are TON of these):

    1. Mark Clayton - put up great numbers. If Marino is one of the all-time greats and none of his receivers are in the HOF - then either he should be the greatest ever by a mile or at least one of his main targets should be in the HOF. Clayton and Duper were both phenomenal but I'd give the edge to Clayton for a HOF vote. I think he should be there.

    2. Tony Nathan - as with many RB's his career wasn't really long - but he was a great player, imo, and the offense really went down a bit when he was gone. He averaged 4.8 yards a carry for his career and was a tremendous pass receiving back (Nathan also had six seasons of 48+ receptions and nearly 400 career receptions - in only 63 starts).

    3. Jeff Cross - he had several very good seasons as a pass rusher on some very mediocre defenses (with some of the worst DBs - like Lankford, Judson and J.B. Brown - burn city right there). Give that guy some great DBs (Madison & Surtain) and he probably has 3-4 more sacks a season.

    4. Keuchenberg - Also should be in the HOF. Underrated only b/c he's not in the HOF. But, many fans rate him pretty highly - appropriately so. That said, he clearly should be in the Hall - for the Vikings SB alone!!! The inner three of Kooch-Langer-Little were arguably as dominant as any inner three O-linemen in NFL history. They were at the core of the two SB wins and all the success of Miami in the early 70's.

    5. Manny Fernandez - Should be mentioned for HOF, at least.

6 (tie). Jake Scott / Dick Anderson - I think either or both should be in HOF. In the first half of 70's this was the greatest Safety combo and all I remember is both of them regularly making plays - game in and game out they were phenomenal players and had a tremendous nose for the balls. Still the two best safeties in Dolphins history.

    8. Surtain - See above.

    Here's NFL.com's list of their top 5 over/underrated:

    http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap10...dolphins-alltime-underrated-overrated-players

I never really thought of Parcells as overrated, as nobody in Miami rated him at all for his time here! However, I suppose their list is from the point of view of all the NFL, so he gets my vote. I wouldn't have put Cox in the overrated list, we were very lucky in having Offerdahl, then Cox, then Thomas, and he maybe is overrated when compared to the other two, but he was still a very good inside linebacker. If anybody, I would have put Dansby on the list ahead of Cox.
