Expect personnel shakeup in Miami with Parcells now in charge
    By PFW staff
    Dec. 20, 2007

Although the sequence of events unfolded more like a soap opera than a football transaction, the end result is straight forward: Bill Parcells is going to the Dolphins. Just hours after it was reported that Parcells would be heading to Atlanta to replace Falcons general manager Rich McKay, Parcells agreed to a four-year contract Wednesday evening to serve as the Dolphins’ V.P. of football operations.

Parcells had apparently been in talks with the Dolphins last week. But, reports out of South Florida earlier this week that owner Wayne Huizenga was shopping the team to a pair of real-estate moguls served as the impetus for Parcells’ waning interest in Miami and subsequent interest elsewhere. Huizenga has the reputation of being comfortable relinquishing football decisions to his coaches and executives, and Parcells didn’t want to be faced with the prospect of new ownership undermining his authority. Reassured by Huizenga that he would remain majority owner for the near future, Parcells finally agreed to the Miami job where he will only have to report to the hands-off owner. The financial terms have not been disclosed.

I love this hire FFIC, he brings much needed toughness and presense to an organization that desperately needs it, he's a man thats all about football, he could care less that he's in south beach, he could care less that our stadium sucks,TOUGHNESS is the key characteristic that the new miami dolphin player must have because if you don't have that, playing in this town in that stadium, your going to have a 1 and 16 team.

There are so many side deals and blurred lines of Authority on our team right now, I do think we will see a housecleaning of large proportions.

Houck, Dom, Armstrong, Robiske et al are likely to be gone along with Mueller.

Dom has connections to Parcells so I'm not sure if he is a sure goner but the other guys are defitnitely not going to be back along with Mueller who I think is a goner before the draft. I would like to see Robiskie stay but it is unlikely.

I am dying to know why you believe Houck will be gone.

The OL has turned the corner this season. Bright spot in my opinion.

The idea that "Dom is Head Coach of the Defense" simply won't work in a Tuna chain of organization, it smacks of one Coach rowing his own oar to their own time...IMO.

Houck because I "think" he runs a different sort of blocking scheme then Parcells teams run, but whether or not Parcells will expect that level of adherence to what he wants remains to be seen, and the Houck one pick a yr side deal may not fly at all, like Dom, it may look like he is looking for a "Side Deal" outside of an vertical chain of command.

    Speculation, nothing more..

very true houck needs to stay, the OL has a lot of potential especially with satele who has been very good

the oline is a very bright spot, i think the dolphins with ronnie and chatman were second in the league in rushing

I agree, it would be better if we kept Houck, Parcells may want a sort of vertical chain of command, not one coach doing "X" one coach with "side deal such and such".

So who knows, to me Tuna just doesn't seem like he would go for that sort of deal under "we are one organization, no side deals, no one is treated specially over another one"

Our bright spot still has us sitting at 1-13, that is why everything might be steamrolled and youthanized, I think we all need to understand just how large of a failure this season has been in order to understand what might be coming next.

We came within a missed field goal and poor play calling on the Ravens part to avoid a record for futility, let's not sugar coat that, we flipped our roster over 50% this season, we may see that happen again, or maybe even more players may be shown the door.

    The howling may be legendary....

Here we go again, you guys would have fired Tom Landry of the Cowboys, he was winless his 1st year.

Gone also would be Chuck Noll of Pittsburgh and Jimmy Johnson at Dallas both 1 game winner their 1st year and maybe Bill Walsh at SF, he won 2 games, hey maybe Cam wins 2 games.

Landry was 3-13 when he was fired in 1988...

Things change quickly in the NFL, even a Super Bowl winning dynasty building coach is not immune from being shown the door in order to improve a team.

lmaoo WOW. a lot of potential? from who? a 31 yr old RT who failed at lT? or a 32 yr old journeyman LG?

It was said in an article earlier today, Parcells will fix the o line especially with 3 spots. Satele will stay and it said he will most likjely like Carey as well. it was on ESPN (the article). He wont sit pat with this crappy Pass Protecting O line. and a shaky run line. If u look at the GW TD pass, only reason why we won is we got taht extra second to let Cam to finish his route properly.

Satele and Carey are locks, no doubt. I can't wait to see who he can lure here. Faneca, maybe?

Point being, you are only as good as your last season in the NFL, even Landry and Noll are not safe, so a rookie coach may not be either.

Naah, we are rebuilding, 34 or 35 yr old guards aren't really in the cards, especially expensive FA Guards.

First up for the chopping block is Dom Capers. Who Tuna replaces Dom with is anyone's guess. Could be Bowles, the secondary coach in Dallas. I smell something afoot in Oakland with Rob Ryan, and if he gets the ouster then I could see him ending up in Miami coaching Parcells' 3-4 defense.

Parcells will give it the old college try with Mueller, but they will invariably butt heads with each other and I wouldn't doubt Mueller does something stoopid like try to push for Darren McFadden just so that he can draw Parcells into overruling him on a draft issue, which would get Mueller to quit and give Randy the ammo to say that he quit of his own volition because Parcells didn't heed his own job description.

Cameron will be retained for at least another year, I'm 95% sure of it. When Mueller leaves after the 2008 Draft, he will likely be replaced by Jeff Ireland. Ireland arrived in Dallas in 2001 from Kansas City where he was a regional scout and once worked for Marty Schottenheimer. Almost immediately in Big D, he impressed enough to have Larry Lacewell earmarking him as his eventual successor. In 2004, Lacewell retires and Ireland becomes the head honcho. Right away his 2005 draft goes down as one of the best in Dallas history. Aside from that he's just a really nice guy. Very family-oriented, heck I could imagine he and Cameron going to the same church. Everyone in the Dallas organization loves the guy, from coaches to scouts to administrators right on down to assistant trainers. Best of all, the guy considers Tuna a "mentor" and they saw eye to eye on many, many issues...most of all character.

Speaking of which, that's why Ireland could leave Dallas. He and Jerry Jones don't see eye to eye on the character issue. When Tank Johnson was released, Ireland went on record saying they would probably not pursue him at all, he can't imagine it...because when he scouted Johnson coming out of college he had all kinds of character red flags and then what he did with the Bears made it even worse. But, Jones sent the directive that Tank would come aboard anyway...and that's a bit of an embarrassment for Ireland, who got caught telling the press they wouldn't be interested in the guy because he's a rotten egg, only to find out that Jones would take him anyway. Also, the Director of College and Pro Personnel position in Dallas is known as a nameless, faceless, thankless position since Lacewell took it over in 1992. Try and find Jeff Ireland's bio on the Dallas Cowboys website. You won't even find it. Yet, he's the guy that really runs the entire scouting staff.

So far, that is the extent of the shakeup I see happening, although once Capers goes, all his assistants are fair game as well...especially late-comers Brett Maxie and Diron Reynolds. Also don't be surprised if Hudson Houck retires. He should be finishing up the third year of his 3-year deal, which was a record deal for an OL coach. They hired Tim Davis from Houck's alma mater to be Houck's understudy and successor. Houck should be around 64 years old. Parcells is 66 years old and he admits he'd never coach again, that this is a younger man's game for coaches. Don't be surprised to see Houck hand the reins over to Tim Davis...and I'm cool with it. But, it will only further encourage Parcells to have Mueller focus on the OL...which brings Faneca and Jordan Gross both into play as free agents.

    CK,

I'm not so sure about your prediction on the Mueller front. Randy and Cam have worked hand in glove so far so provided they're kept together I can't see Randy pulling any power plays as he really needs to re-establish his rep for future GM positions that may become available. All bets are off 2 year from now or if CamCam is not retained.

Randy and Cam have worked well together but Cameron is a very submissive personality when confronted with dominant personalities. He allows Randy Mueller all kinds of leeway and doesn't step on his toes about anything. That's probably more a reason why Cameron will get along fine with Parcells, rather than a reason Randy will get along fine with Parcells. Randy has a history of not playing well with others. He didn't play well with New Orleans ownership/management because he felt they were too meddling, he didn't get along well with Holmgren probably for the same reason, and lord knows the relationship between Mueller and Saban deteriorated significantly into a lot of in-fighting and blame-mongering. When Saban left he accused Mueller of flat out ignoring Saban's priorities on what to look for in certain players.

You think that stuff will work with Bill Parcells? Not on your life. Parcells WILL meddle in personnel affairs. It is part of his job description. Sure, he says he doesn't want the GM job, but he's damn well going to oversee the GM job and he's damn well going to go on scouting trips and be part of senior bowl and combine interviews, etc. He's going to be a part of the process, you can bet your life on it. And for Mueller, that's going to be way too much interference from above. He doesn't deal with it. He just doesn't, it's not in his history. Nor is it in Parcells' history to deal well with a man that isn't very accomodating or submissive. That's one thing about Jeff Ireland, he knows how to keep a handle on Parcells without pissing Bill off. He knows how to get his input heeded without starting a feud. Randy doesn't. He'll want to dominate and so will Parcells and that will create tension and eventually Randy will ask to be released from his contract.

And just because Cameron is loyal to guys like Randy Mueller and Dom Capers, doesn't mean they are loyal to him. Capers has been blaming everyone but himself for this horrible defense since Day 1. Now, Pro Football Talk has a rumor that Capers wants out of Miami and is angling for his release. Meanwhile, you think Mueller and Cameron are tight? I have no doubt that Cameron would go to bat for Randy, but I think Randy would sell Cameron down the river for a pack of chewing gum. Already, Pro Football Weekly (a different, more reputable rumor mill than PFT) is reporting whispers that Randy Mueller is attempting to distance himself from Cam Cameron and this failed season in order to save his own skin. The PFW rumor even noted how ironic it is, since Mueller's actions probably have had a lot more detrimental effect on the year than Cameron's coaching.

It is what it is. Cameron's a guy that will stay loyal to his people and that worries me a little because I would want him to approach Bill with an open mind and not get his nose bent too out of shape when Tuna starts canning everyone around him. That would be a huge shame, because in all reality neither Capers nor Mueller would shed a tear if their reputations were to be saved and Tuna were to fire Cameron.

Parcells wants to be a resource for a young coach like Cameron. He said it himself in his NFL Live interview, and I have been talking about it in phinchat since before the interview. If you had a Bill Walsh working in your front office, and you were a second year coach trying to find success in this league...wouldn't you go to him for some pointers? Hell, Cam and Randy sat in the office with Bill Polian, the GM of a rival AFC opponent, and picked his brain for pointers on how to run an NFL franchise. Why wouldn't Cameron use Bill as a resource for how to run a training camp without turning it into Club Med, how to tighten up practices to make them more productive, etc? When Bill got on NFL Live he alluded to the same things, he said it's a young man's job at coach nowadays and he'd rather help a guy out on becoming a great coach, and if he needs help on some of the more technical aspects he could come to him and use Bill as a resource.

How much do you want to bet that is something that Huizenga and Parcells had already talked about, possibly as a result of that internal review they conducted? SOMEONE out there is telling Jorge Sedano of 790 The Ticket that Cam's practices "have no rhyme or reason" to them, and whichever player it is, he's claiming that he's not the only one to think so. There have also been complaints to Sedano about other technical aspects like how whoever it was and Ted Ginn tried to go to the facility to watch film on an off day and got turned away. How much you want to bet that in Huizenga's internal review, he found that Cameron needs help on the "technical" aspects of coaching a football team...the nitty gritty, the stuff that Saban was exceptional with? How much do you want to bet Wayne and Bill have been talking about that in particular while playing golf together for weeks, and that is why on NFL Live Parcells used that term, talking about how if the younger coach needed help on the "technical" aspects of coaching, he could come to him and use him as a resource?

And btw, it's not about "replacing Houck". It's about the fact that Houck's contract is expiring and he will likely retire, IMO. If Houck says "I want to come back" then they'll have a new contract drawn up within the hour.

    ck,

do you really think parcells sees that much potential in cameron?

some may figure that parcells would look at cameron's shortcomings and say that he simply doesnt have what it takes.

I think that Parcells knows damn well that he arrived as head coach of the New York Giants and inherited a similarly BAD situation, and went 3-12-1 his first year. Parcells was a fledgling head coach at the time, and he damn near got fired after that first year. I think Parcells is awful glad that his owners had an open enough mind not to fire him after that year and let him continue down his hall of fame path.

For that reason alone, unless Cameron screws it up by being too bent out of shape about Parcells' front office and coaching shakeups, I think Parcells will keep Cameron.

But there are other reasons. First off, when we first heard about this weeks ago, I believe it was Ozzy told me that the radio rumor was that Parcells does not think Cameron needs to be fired, and that is part of what drew Huizenga to Parcells in the first place...the fact that Parcells had no preconceived notions that you need to fire a head coach after one year because he's having a poor season.

Second, I know it gets disregarded, but I have no idea why. Cameron and Bobby Knight are friends, enough that Bobby has gone to bat for Cameron on several occasions. He got Cameron a job on Bo Schembechler's staff in Michigan. When he's been asked before about Indiana firing Cameron, Knight has candidly blasted the Indiana athletics department saying that it was plain stupid because they fired Cameron just as he started to get the program turned around and was starting to build some reputation that would help them in recruiting. Knight and Parcells are tight, real tight, have been for decades. That means something. You want to say it doesn't, but it does. This is how coaching positions are FILLED in the National Football League. You don't have a plethora of statistical breakdowns, game films, etc to go off like you do with players. You have references and interviews. If Parcells turns to Knight and asks what he thinks of Cameron and Knight says I think he could be a good coach, Parcells is going to give him a second chance. That's the bottom line.

Third, Cameron and Parcells see completely eye to eye on one of the most important issues out there for Parcells...character. Parcells is a big planet theory guy, hell he practically invented it. But, even planet theory stuff takes a big back seat to Parcells compared with character. He didn't want Terrell Owens. No way, no how. He never would have stood for signing Tank Johnson. When the Patriots front office took Christian Peter in the 5th round of the draft without knowing the extent of his criminal history, you know what happened once Parcells found out? He didn't sign him, period. Never offered him a contract. You know how wherever Bill has gone you've always seen him take some of 'his' players with him, guys you don't really know are all that talented and you wonder why he brings them along? That's character. He brings them along because he knows their locker room character and uses them to establish his locker room.

Cameron and him are practically identical on that issue. Cameron has said many times I don't care if a guy maybe isn't quite as athletic as you'd like, if he's a good character, a guy that gives 100% effort every day and has a will to get better, they'll find a way to make him useful. If Cameron weren't that type of coach, I would say that Parcells might ditch him in favor of Tony Sparano. But, he is that type of coach, so I think Cameron is on for another year at least.

I think we're going to have a complete overhaul of the coaching staff with Bill bringing in his own head coach. Mueller will be gone. I was hoping Cameron would be kept on. I think his offense coupled with a Parcells defense would be a great combination. But after watching Parcells ESPN interview and seeing Cameron's press conference it seems the writing is on the wall. Parcells doesnt like to share credit. Cameron and Mueller did the tough stuff this year of gutting the team of its overpriced talent and we are now in great cap shape. I think Parcells is going to bring in his own coach (maybe Tony Sparano or Baltimore's Rex Ryan) This way when we invariably improve next year its going to be completely because of Bill Parcells and his legend will remain intact. If you keep Cameron then he's going to share in the accolades and one thing Ive learned about Bill living in New York and seeing this guy week in and week out during his tenure here, is that Bill doesnt share. Its a shame because I think Parcells and Cameron would be a great combination

Just to reiterate, I would be shocked if Parcells let Cameron go. I didn't see anything in Parcells' NFL Live interview or in Cameron's press conference that suggested a "writing on the wall" situation for Cameron. When Parcells says he has no preconceived notions about whether he's going to be firing people or not, I believe him, because otherwise Huizenga would not have released language that said stuff like "We have a great coach, a great GM, and now we have a good guy to be in charge of them." or something to that extent. He also wouldn't have said something like "They're both safe as far as I know" even if he did qualify it at the end by saying Parcells is now in charge of those decisions.

If they walked into this thing with preconceived notions about firing the head coach and GM, they would have started to butter up the fanbase for such maneuvers. Or, at the very least, they wouldn't be conducting misdirection by reiterating confidence in the guys even though they already plan on firing them.

Houck needs to stay.. GOOD OL coaches are hard to find, We need to keep some stability for the players and allowing Hudson to stay on board is a smart and good choice..

Looks like Mike Malurky Dom Capers and the other messups are going to be gone..

I hate Dom Capers Defense Even when we were better we would always cave in at the end!

We're just reading different things in between the lines. I viewed the fact that Cameron wasnt praised by Bill in typical PR speak as a sign. Plus I have close to a decade of listening to the guy's press conferences. Personally I would love to see Cameron kept on. I think that would be the wisest move for this franchise. I really think these two would be a deadly combination. The problem I think is that Parcells isnt going to want to share any of the glory. If he gets rid of everyone then the inevitable improvement we'll have next year will be attributed solely to his doing. Noone's going to remember that Cameron laid the groundwork with Mueller by gutting the team of overpricwed veterans and putting us in a strong salary cap position. Noone's going to remember all the injuries we took. Noone's going to remember all the young players we added. All they will remember is the record 1-15 or 2-14. We're going to improve next year even if we dont add a new piece. 6-10 if we do nothing 8-8 if we have a great draft and free agency period. We'll be healthier and all our rookies will have one extra year of experience. Parcells is going to want to grab all the accolades for himself. If Cameron is kept on then it isnt all Parcells

Hopefully I'm wrong and I do leave open the possibility that Cameron gets along with Bill and Bill decides to retain him. I just think Cameron is going to be upset by the development as well. He bit the bullett the first year and did all the long range things he needed to to make this team competitive long term and he's never going to get the credit for it. Parcells will. I dont think Cameron is going to be as suckup as he probably needs to be to keep the job

On a side note good to see you back CK. I think I'm going to owe you my phin dollars if I stuill have them on the Harrington culpepper bet - LOL. Its funny I think they both proved this year that they are strictly backup material from here on out. I think you may have won by decimal points once we get back the formula.

Had a question CK. I see you mentioned Tony Sparano. That's who I think Parcells is going to bring in as head coach. We disagree right now but if it were to happen what type of coach would Sparano be. I really dont have a read on him

I don't know Adam... IF Bill wants success as a VP, then he has to be sure to have the right guys in place supporting him. And to keep Cam on board would be a step in the right direction. As said above in bold, he made some good decisions to get the team headed in the right direction. By Bill keeping Cam, it would not steal from his parade, but rather add to it as HE, BILL, made the decision to keep a guy that has shown he understands what it will take to move forward...

EDIT: And on a side note, even if Cam is let go, he will still be the one that will be remembered as starting the rebuild...

Me and you both agree that that would be the sensible thing. Bill is an egomaniac though and I fear he will want all the glory even if it means wasting another year installing a new coach. Dont get me wrong, its not out of the realms of possibility that he keeps him. I dont know what their relationship is like or how strong the Bobby Knight influence is going to be. I think Cameron, if he isnt upset by having an overlord placed on top of him, could be a perfect fit for Parcells but I think Parcells is going to want a lackey and I'm not sure if Cameron is just going to roll over for Bill. If he doesnt he's gone. If Cameron is willing to have the course of the Dolphins be in somebody else's hands then maybe they work together. But I think that's doubtful. What could keep Cameron on board is if their philosophy going forward is almost identical. I dont know if it is

We'll just have to see, I guess. With Sparano, I think KB21 can offer more insight. He's just well-regarded in the Dallas locker room and by Parcells himself. He would have been in line to take the OC job if Garrett hadn't been brought on board.

  36. I was calling for this exact move by WH when jerry jones shoved TO down Parcels throat. The writing was on the wall back then and when Saban pulled his stunt Parcells was the the guy I wanted here. Let me retract a little, I was thinking of putting him in the HC postion, but this spot I think is even better suited for Parcels. I for one am thrilled to have him here.

He is going to come in here and make some evaluations of who he thinks fit into his picture and if your not one of them you will be gone. I dont see player ages as a big of a factor as performance. He will keep middleaged players around for now if they fit his schemes unless he sees someone exceptionally better out there. There is too much building to do to be picky about age. He will hold onto to any talent he has and use his resources to fill holes where we need them filled.

Coaching I think the same is true, if they fit they stay if they dont they go. I think Bill will be more likely to clean house on the upper levels in order to put people he trusts around him. I dont think it's a matter of him unwilling to share credit rather more a case of him not wanting to be blamed for another failure for miami.

I'm not going to speculate who he is going to keep and who is getting cut. I trust him to restore us back to what we once were and he has my fullest support to get in there roll up his sleeves and get er done.

I am going on record as saying this is the singlest best move WH has made for this franchise since he has had control of it.

Thats what I find funny about my hesitation to have uncontrolled joy at the hiring. Parcells was my number one choice to coach last year. I think Cameron was 3rd or 4th. I only wanted offensive guys after Parcells. The young kid who was 32 or 33 I think was my 2nd choice. Parcells wouldve been a fantastic hire last year. My only fear is having to go through another wholesale change. I think alot of good things have been put in place where we dont need to take a step back to go forward again. Cameron and Parcells share one common trait. They really understand the big picture. Cameron had the gonads to strip this team and start from scratch (yes we still have to do a little housecleaning on the defensive side but we did have to field a team) He did it his first year as a rookie coach which I think showed great guts. I really think Cameron concentrating on the offense and the defensive philosophy being put in by Parcells chosen defensive coordinator could be a SuperBowl combination someday. I just fear we're going to start from scratch all over again. I dont want to waste another year installing another offensive system.

i didnt know getting rid of players was the 'tough' stuff. i thought bringing in good ones was tougher.

also, adding someone like joey porter does not really contribute to getting rid of old, overpriced players

True regarding Porter but obviously we werent looking at that position in the draft. It saved us a draft choice. cant fix everything in one year. As for the talent brought in : Ginn, L. Booker, Satele, Mauia, Moses have all showed promise their rookie years. If they take another step forward in their 2nd years they will all be solid picks and pickups. Add the names Mormino, Beck, Fields and Soliai who hopefully step up next year and that could be a grand slam of an offseason. Hell, even Gado and Camarillo helped us out and they came real cheap

As for it being tough to cut players, that is far tougher than getting new ones IMO. You are bound to regress and you risk losing your veteran players and your fanbase not to mention your job. Add the fact you're a rookie coach with no track record and that takes alot of guts i my book
