The Philbin Phactor: We talk so much about Tannehill’s anticipated improvement, don’t forget that Joe Philbin is entering his second season as well. Philbin has said on several occasions he expects to be a better coach this year in many ways. I look at Philbin and I see confidence, I see organization, I see an extremely bright man and I see someone who tries to be prepared for every situation. Don’t discount The Philbin Phactor.

    coaching! coaching! coaching!
the key will be quality coaching to piece together a play-off team with so many new players on the roster
it's all about the coaching cadre now

Fans completely underestimate how important a coach that is smart, dynamic and willing to make adjustments is in the game of football.
I've seen some really ignorant posts over the years on the importance of good coaching.

A good coach can put a team over the top.

How good Philbin will be is still yet to be seen but the signs are very positive up to this point.

Most here last year were posting negatively about Joe's views about all the little, so called minor details. Picking up things out of place, demanding proper dress, getting on guys about bad language, and his overall nictpicking ways.

His methods reminded me of Tom Coughlin's first year in Jax as its HC, not his personality but his methods of teaching and the thoroughness at which he does it. Ross hired us one hell of a HC the likes of which we have not seen since the glory years of Don Shula IMV.

Coaching is the key to sustained excellence. When people make the argument that the players in general and BQ in particular make the coach they can point to Don Shula having Johnny Unitas/Bob Griese/Dan Marino as the main QBs during his coaching years. Don can point to making the Superbowl with Woodstrock at QB.

Whether Philbin is a great coach or not is yet to be seen, but I am getting more positive vibes about Philbing than any coach since Shula. JJ didn't seem to have his heart in the job and wanted to coach the phins as if they were his Dallas team despite them having very different personnel, Wanny is/was a very good DC who did not understand offence, Saban is a college tyrant who could not manage adults, Cameron had a poisoned chalice in trying to clean up Saban's mess and then made it worse, Sparano was a sock puppet.

What will sort out whether or not Philbin is up to the task will be the development of young players.

I've been thinking about Philbin, and the characteristics which seem to be employed as coach.

    1. Attention to detail: he reminds me a little of Tom Landry in that.
    2. He displays character, and expects character, both innate in the personality, and able to be developed. Seems to be a prerequisite for players. There are no angels in football (Even Tebow admits he is a sinner!), but he doesn't want thugs either.
    3. He is not afraid to take chances - a wise gambler. He surprised me with some unexpected, possibly really gutsy calls. It helps keep our team enthusiastic, and the other team just enough off balance to make a difference in the game.
    4. He is not afraid to show his emotions in the game, but he is not so emotional that he loses control of the team. He uses his emotions to lead the team much differently than his predecessor.
    5. He THINKS! It seems to me that he is continually apprising the situation in the game as it develops, and it thinking about what he can do to the other team, instead of worrying about what they will do to his. I like that! It's much better than being stuck in the same predictable rut for 60 minutes of game play!

Now, I admit that I am not a psychologist, a football expert, nor a mentalist! These are just what I observe and what seems to be the approach to football that Philbin takes. I would love to know what y'all think would be a comparison with other coaches in style and execution, because I don't see a clearly valid comparison with any one coach at this point. And to me, that is the exciting thought to have in watching the development of a coach. In the vernacular:

    I think he's gonna be a goodun!

I've heard Joe several times on NFL radio. Every time, I end up thinking how much he reminds me of Shula when he speaks. Not exactly the same voice, but certain speaking mannerisms and expressions are really reminiscent of Shula to me. He also has a wonderful dry sense of humor.

On the coaching side, he does have the positive attributes that have been described by others in this thread. He's detailed, thorough, organized, very intelligent, very good on game day with his decisions. I don't see any significant negatives as of yet. He could certainly take the team a long way towards being a winning organization.

What I like from him the most here is that while we may question what he is doing or what he is thinking or how he is going about doing things, the team seems to know exactly what he's about and what he's trying to accomplish. That is something that was missing from every guy we've had in here since JJ. JJ was different in that he enforced his methods onto the team and they were a young team that was responding well except he left the offensive job undone before he cursed us with Wanny. We are very much like that JJ team, except that the emphasis has been on offense rather than D. The D is however, in decent shape. Now, if this group of offensive guys collected mature like JJ's defensive group, we'll be in very good shape in the coming years...

I can't compare him to Shula yet, although there are similarities. He does remind me a lot of Walsh (thank you Fin D)...cerebral, calculating, smarter than just about anyone else in the stadium. We'll really have to see how this group of players develop this year before we can really compare him to other great coaches... He seems to be a little less vocal and enthusiastic than Walsh or Shula, but every bit as smart...

For the first time in a long, long, long, long time, I'm very excited about this team and it's direction.
