Incognito hates rookies... ironic because he used to be one.

 

Iggy is just Oldschool. He believes you gotta earn your stripes is all. That kind of mind set creates winners instead of pampered ******* like Sanchez.

 

While you would love any QB to cut back on the number of INTs, I don't see that as being the problem last year. RT had 13 INT which puts him right in the middle of the pack for starting QBs. That's not Sanchez 20 pick rookie season by any means. IMO it was the lack of TDs which is more of a concern. With the revamped wr corp I think that issue will take care of itself.

 

I'm super excited about the upcoming season.

 

I'd bet he would say he didn't like himself as a rookie either. It took him several years to just maintain a level enough head on the field to be more of a benefit than a burden.

 

What we kinda, sorta think we know right now is that:

a) the anticipated OL will gel (Clabo, JJ, Pouncey, Iggy, Martin)
b) Grimes and Marshall seem to be healthy
c) Miller seems to be ready to take on the primary role
d) Keller, it seems will also be healthy enough
e) Jordan can at least make an impact (ala Wake in his first year here).
f) Tanny makes the kind of improvement from his rookie campaign that we're expecting

We could be looking at a very exciting team this coming year. One that can be explosive on O and consistent on D... It might be really, really fun to be a Fin fan again...

 

Hard to not enjoy this stuff.

 

Heres what I would like to know:

What did the two scouts that said he was going to be a bust see? I can understand...not agreeing that he will be Pro Bowler...but ..a bust?

 

There was mention that he didn't win enough games in college. IMO that was based on the sort of superficial scouting that looks at stats (in this case wins) w/o looking at the circumstances (in this case a horrid D). Actually most of the criticism was stat based. There was also lots of talk about his few starts and how that made him a huge risk.

 

Even looking at the stats, I don't get how they didn't like what they saw considering his stats are more or less a photocopy of Aaron Rodgers' college stats.

 

Probably talked to two scouts from the Jets.

 

Why is everyone saying that he threw way too many INTs? I'll take 13 a year, every year. Its that lack of TDs that needs to be fixed. I'd take 30 TD 13 INTs.

 

I'm a pretty big Tannehill fan, and I love hearing good things about our team and players from the national media, but this is not that big of a deal.

There really is no other candidate to breakout at QB than Tannehill.

 

There are a couple. It would surprise me though. There are Blaine Gabbart and Jake Locker.

 

Aaron Rodgers was also panned coming out of college.

 

That's the point. These same scouts saw how those stats didn't predict a bust with Rodgers, yet they are going to look at Tannehill's and predict a bust, even though the stats are virtually identical.

 

Did these same scouts say the same things about Rodgers? They're sort of anonymous.

 

I focus a lot on a prospect's personality. It's hard to discern b/c 95% of the time you'll hear a coach praise the player's work ethic. Sometimes you can differentiate among the standard platitudes and real admiration for a player's work ethic. But most of the time I'm looking for some evidence that they work on the nuances of their game. That generally means that they put in extra time. With RT, I became sold when I noticed him do that little shoulder dip as he stepped up into the pocket. That is one of those things that you are taught to do (to avoid the swipe from the pass rusher), but really only get with experience (which he lacked) or by drilling it over and over. I started noticing all the little nuances and attention to detail that he had in his drop backs and play action and coupled with what his coaches and team mates said about him I was confident that he had the drive and personality to succeed as a QB. It was obvious that he worked on and thought about his game constantly.

 

Golly, i dunno.

Luckily for me I was addressing something specific that another poster said. And I was addressing it based on the assumption that what that poster said was true. This is how conversations sometimes work, you know. Apparently I need to use a disclaimer in every post.

 

I have high hopes for Tannehill but isn't this kind of a loaded question?

To discover the next "breakout" quarterback you have to look for a young starter who hasn't already "broken out". Well, Andrew Luck led a circus team to the playoffs and was in the running for OROY. Robert Griffin actually won OROY. Russell Wilson was arguably better than both and probably should have gone to the NFCCG. You can't pick those guys, they've already "broken out". Meanwhile, you can't pick Cam Newton because he's already broken out. You can't even pick Colin Kaepernick because he's already broken out, went to the Super Bowl and now he's being ranked right up there with Newton. Could you pick Andy Dalton? Maybe, but it doesn't quite fit because he was already somewhat of a revelation even as a rookie and he's led his team (the historically dysfunctional Cincinnati Bengals) to two straight playoff appearances. Nobody picks rookies for breakout predictions like this, especially from this draft class, so it's easy to toss Geno Smith and E.J. Manuel out of the running.

You're left with a smattering of Jake Locker, Blaine Gabbert/Chad Henne, Christian Ponder, Matt Flynn, Ryan Tannehill and Brandon Weeden. Those are the guys that really qualify for potential choice as "breakout" prediction. Among them, I have to agree. Tannehill performed well as a rookie, and now just got Mike Wallace added to his arsenal. That's got to be the chalk.

If people actually believed in Jake Locker then you could say he has favorable circumstances with Justin Hunter being added to a mix that already includes Kendall Wright, Kenny Britt and Nate Washington. They have a good line, too...having just added Andy Levitre, Chance Warmack and Brian Schwenke to a unit that already has Michael Roos and David Stewart on the outside. And Schwenke probably won't even start for a while because they've still got Eugene Amano and Chris Spencer. It's kind of ridiculous how much they've built that offensive line to be honest. The whole team is good. If Jake Locker were a good quarterback that team could coast into the playoffs. But people don't have faith in Jake Locker and I say there's good reason for that. They should've rolled the dice on Matt Barkley, IMO.

Blaine Gabbert/Chad Henne...hahahahahaa.

People aren't going to pick Matt Flynn for something like this. Especially being on a bad Raiders team. The last image everyone has in their head for Flynn is him getting beat by a rookie Russell Wilson. Never mind that Russell Wilson might be the best rookie passer I've ever seen. He was beat by a rookie. That's all. Already people are wanting to see the same thing happen to him with Tyler Wilson. You're going to read a lot of articles over the next 90 days angling for that to happen.

Brandon Weeden would be a nice candidate because of the system changes, the coaching additions, and the ground game that should really shape up with a nice offensive line and Trent Richardson hauling the rock. You WOULD think he'd be a candidate because of that, but only if Mike Lombardi had actually many any effort to significantly improve his pass catching unit. Instead they let Ben Watson go out to pasture, replacing him with...Kellen Davis?!? And then they acquire Davone Bess. That's pretty much it. Unless you count David Nelson, which I don't. I'd like to see Brandon Weeden beat the odds. If he does, it's going to have to involve making Cameron Jordan actually work as a tight end, getting the ball in the passing game to Trent Richardson and Dion Lewis a ton, being on the money with his deep passes to Josh Gordon, and moving the chains with Davone Bess. If he does all that I think it would be a little bit of an F.U. to a General Manager that never believed in him and may be attempting to shift all his resources into the future when he can acquire a new quarterback as well as the pass catchers to surround him, all in one stroke.

 

Most people or scouts don't adapt. I was always a big believer in looking at the prospects I was wrong about to try and figure what I missed or what I should have considered or given more or less weight to. Most scouts just tend to spout the same cliches over and over rather than learn from their mistakes.

 

Not to throw a damper on the party parade but theres no way Grimes is healthy. None. He tore an Achilles not an ACL. Achilles is a longer rehab. Week 1 was when it was torn. That was September.; nine months ago. He might be able to walk and run a little on it but if hes a 100% and in football shape by now hes either a miracle healer or on PED's. Thats an injury you think about every time you cut. I would think his confidence wont be where it needs to be til about 4-6 games in to the season. Maybe by around midseason we're seeing how good a player he is. I doubt hes where we need him by week 1 or 2. Actually, early on, I think I would go so far as to ease him back in to the role if Taylor is up to speed. As much as I cant stand Marshall, Id let him start til Grimes is ready and use Grimes only in dime packages to see how that Achilles responds and see how confident he is in game situations. Hes a very nice player and a signing I wanted but let him earn his way back up the depth chart.

 

The videos of Grime's workouts look like a guy who is healthy. There will obviously be usual confidence building when he first gets back on the field and takes contact, but I have no doubts about Grimes being physically recovered.

 

Not to mention that he threw nearly half those INTs over the first 4 weeks of the season (6)… and he threw two INT's over the last six game so he showed some improvement.

 

The more I look at the Titans the more I wonder if they could be a breakout team even with Jake Locker at quarterback.

Damn they really should've gone after a guy like Barkley, IMO.

 

Because, he only threw 12 TDs. The two play off of each other. Both are drive ending throws. Would you take 20TDs and 15 INts? No, but 20/5 would be ok. RT didn't throw a lot of INTs compared to his peers except RGIII (who had a ridiculous 1.3% INT rate). Wilson 2.5, RT 2.7, Luck 2.9.

But it's like saying a running back only fumbled twice all year. Oh yeah? How many carries, yards and TDs does he have?

 

Dream team 2.0 has arrived. The Dolphins basically picked up almost every household name they could get their hands on. They picked up a lot of talent we know all too well that talent alone doesn't win football games. They also made an aggressive move in the 1st round to pick up Dion Jordan. They have some nice pieces on their team. With all the noise they made during the offseason, has me curious to see how they put it together and see if they can make it work unlike Dream Team 1.0. With all that said, I believe Tannehill will have a break out season as well.

 

They have Ryan Fitzpatrick.

 

That's not true. they grabbed exactly one household name, Wallace.

The rest are just solid young (outside of Clabo) players hitting their stride.

Instead of throwing interceptions the last 6 games Tanny took sacks instead
with 16 sacks in the last 6 games

 

Not THAT comforting...especially since they're going to give Jake Locker every opportunity first before they find themselves turning to Fitzpatrick. But Ryan would no doubt enjoy throwing the football to talents like Britt, Hunter, Wright and Washington versus what he had in Buffalo. I could see them losing a bunch of games under Locker and then turning to Fitzpatrick and going on a streak to make a run at the playoffs.

 

I see Locker getting hurt as they use him more as a running quarterback.

 

Can't really compare to 13s rookie year though. Full season, in a passer friendly league. Context.

There are too many IFs for us to be special this year. Taken individually you can make a good case that each single element is more likely to occur than not. What you cannot do is assume that each and every one of them will occur.

IF we can get 4 out of those 6 to happen, the most important being Tannehill's improvement, then 2014 will be the year to be excited about. My strong view is that 2013 is the year that the phins get a solid base built for a dynasty.

 

I snapped my achilles ~10 years ago. You get 90% of your improvement in the 6 months following surgery and the last 10% comes in the next 12 months. The 12 month mark was when the confidence started returning.

 

I'm more focused on Lance Louis then Grimes', the right side of the OL has been in flux for as long as I've followed the team, along with Clabo he'll help solidify it.

I don't mind John Jerry's game, it's more to the point that I'm tired of waiting for his light to come on and just seize the starter's job with no question about it.
