For all the PC gaming fans out there, not that I have my PC all set up (thanks Desides and others) I'm looking for games to play. I'm not all too interested in console games. I have some of those, and I'm more interested in games that are PC only. Open world games. I've tried WoW (didn't care for it) and am screwing around with Star Wars a little bit but it's just whatever for me. I've heard there are some cool FPS open world type MMO games. Can anyone recommend some good ones?

    Thanks in advance!

Depends on what you mean by open world, because it's not as if there are many PC-exclusive open world games. The advantage on PC is that open world games are generally more easily traversed due to higher horsepower, and moddable to look better or improve mechanics.

So, try games like Fallout: New Vegas, Far Cry 3, Crysis, Saints Row The Third, etc.

I know it's on Xbox, but Minecraft is absolutely worth checking out on PC. Other games to try: STALKER series, Mount & Blade, and Torchlight 2. I will say though that don't expect too many PC exclusive games in terms of open world. Building a gaming PC is about getting the best graphical experience possible. A lot of the best PC open world games are also console games; so game like Sleeping Dogs, GTA, Just Cause 2, Far Cry 3, etc... should still be on your radar because not only are they good games, but you will getting a much better experience with your PC.

Just Cause 2 is supposed to be a ridiculous amount of fun, and can be found regularly for $5 or less.

Need for Speed - Most Wanted (newest one) is open world as well, and I think it's great. Same with Burnout Paradise.

I guess I should have clarified it's not that I don't want to play console games on the PC. I do and am playing some now. It's just that I know about most of those. I'm wondering what PC games there might be out there that I haven't heard about or maybe just ignored. Planetside 2 intrigues me. Downloading now.

DDO (Dungeons and Dragons Online) and LOTRO ( Lord of the Rings Online) by Turbine are both pretty good if you're looking for standard fantasy fare...

Mechwarrior Online (piloting giant robots) is pretty nice, too.

Also Fallen Earth (post apocalyptic) and DC Universe (superheroes).

I would suggest anyone being wary of games published/developed by Perfect World.

They have a very unique approach to "free to play" games, and it is worth mentioning now that they have really forayed into the western market rather than focusing on asia.

They essentially created the term "Pay to Win". Sure, you could enjoy their games without paying, but when it comes to competitiveness and especially anything PVP related - you are always forced to pay up with micro-transactions. Every single game where they are involved, you are purchasing power rather than something cosmetic or non-gameplay impacting like most western MMOs utilize.

I want this company to fail miserably in the west. Their model must not achieve any kind of success to where it spreads. Hopefully one day they realize that most westerners aren't satisfied with using our real world wallet to boost up our in-game strength.

Now, I understand this game was developed by Cryptic, so PW only got their claws in it at the last moment. After looking into the absolutely convoluted "diamond" system, I couldnt help but see more of the same and blame PW.

The one saving grace for that game is the engine. It looks like combat is pretty solid, and they have some active movement abilities like dodge, double jump that are nice. It's just a shame that Perfect World took it over, any other company that does F2P MMOS like SOE or Turbine could have done a much better job with it.

Guild Wars 2 is pretty fun. Not as good as GW1 I say but a great game nonetheless.

Loved Guild Wars 2...but dropped it a couple months back because they did dick all about improving WvWvW which was what folks loved about it.

So I've been giving Planetside 2 a try. After fixing the constant crashing issue, the lack of any kind of tutorial is maddening. I'll play it a little more but my patience is waning. I've watched some YouTube tutorials but they leave a lot to be desired. It has everything I'm looking for in a game, just poor execution and the learning curve it too high.

Any games out there similar to Planetside 2 that are better?

It is a great game man. Once you are done with the learning curve, you will really learn to appreciate the game. I stopped playing it because it at the time (three months ago or something) the bigger zerg rush won. I really should get back into it though. The teamwork is great if you find the right squads and stuff. I left before the bases had underground tunnels and stuff, to combat the vehicle zergs, but I really haven't given it another shot. Needless to say, it was great fun while I was playing, but I just lost interest with a new BF3 DLC release, Arma 3 Alpha, etc.

What's the zerg rush? Is that a type of vehicle? What's Arma 3 all about?

ARMA 3 is a hardcore military sim. If you're struggling with Planetside 2, you will be crushed by ARMA's learning curve.

I wouldn't say ARMA is hardcore. It just doesn't hold your hand, and its interface is garbage (best example ever of the phrase "meant to be played with other real humans"). There are some real hardcore milsims out there that make ARMA look like Quake 3.

But yes, it's a relatively open world, and it's excellent if you play it right. I'm still waiting for Tone_E to request my noob services...

I'm no pro myself. Trust me. Not compared to some groups that I was playing with on occasion in ArmA 2. The actually hosted courses for radio communication, formations, map reading, flying, attack maneuvers, etc. I mean, like real hardcore. They developed a custom radio system called ACRE that has long range, short range, distances. For example one mission the radio operator, yes, there were radio operators, had to cross signals for the entire platoon because the radio tower was in the middle of the map and once you passed it, you had to readjust all your channels. Ridiculous. I don't have the time or will to be that dedicated to a video game. Just youtube ACRE and or United Operations. UO are very condescending and arrogant and spiteful to noobs. They forced me to be a squad leader once, and got pissed because I couldn't lead them appropriately. ShakTak and Dslyecxi are better, friendlier groups for Arma2. You want serious milsim, join those groups, you will feel like you are on tour. LOl.

Des, we will get into Arma 3 soon. I haven't been on much lately man. Shh been busy.

Monster, a zerg rush is a term taken from Starcraft (even though I never played the game lol) and essentially means a MASS of people and vehicles moving as one. A swarm per se. In Starcraft zergs were very weak alien units individually, but people made masses of them because they were cheap and swarmed enemies. In Planetside, a zerg is any collection of forces that are moving as one and can contain tanks, galaxies, air assault units, etc. These things roll across the map capturing one territory to the next, obviously moving towards the Bio Labs, Tech Plants, etc. as that is where the most XP is gained. That is what I did usually, I rolled with forces as I was in a platoon, and basically went region to region camping opponents spawn points - the glowing shields that wont let you pass through doorways. The game became fun when there were true battles for regions and zergs clashed, sometimes three ways with all three races fighting. We weren't always the largest group of forces, but you have to roll with others in Planetside. The game was meant for cooperation. Planetside can be very rewarding, and until you get tired of it, I really encourage you to stick with it because of the amount of fun I had with the game. And for a free to play, it really isn't a pay to win game.

Oh, I know all about UO. They make some nice Youtube videos. Didn't know they were that anal, though. They seem like pretty decent guys just trying to get the most out of their game, at least in the videos. False advertising?

That's two of us. Work's slowing down little for me though. Finally getting some breathing room.

Right now the biggest problem I'm having with PC games, specifically Planetside 2 is the transition from being a console control pad player since 1986 going to keyboard and mouse. I'm just not anywhere near good enough yet for games like Planetside 2 to be entertaining. I'm trying though. Putting the hours in, but it's a grind. I think in an hour and 1/2 of playing yesterday I killed maybe 2 guys and died probably at least 20. Flying, forget about. Crashing into the ground over and over again. And by far the thing I'm hating most about PC gaming is having to press a button to talk using a headset. Anyone know any ways around this, specifically for Planetside 2?

Playing single player games like Bioshock, I'm getting better. I'm hoping it will come with time. But I'm also still playing Black Ops on Xbox, and that might be hindering my progress. Kinda like wearing briefs every other day while you're trying to get used to boxers...

Once you get used to keyboard and mouse, you will never want to go back to a controller. Flying, many games have compatibility for console controllers. Xbox controllers can be plugged right into the PC I believe. Logitech also has a $25 usb controller as well. May want to check that.

The push to talk thing may be an inconvenience. Best advice is to bind it to a key that you are comfortable with - or a mouse button. Some voip games have voice activation, but not sure which ones because I never use it anyway. Only alternative is a third party program like teamspeak, but again, you only talk to people in your TS channel, not everyone in the game obviously.

Check the options for PS2 to see if they have a voice activation.

Open mic is the most evil invention of the first decade of this century. In the hands of a prepubescent Halo player, one loses faith in humanity within two minutes.

If you read my review of PS2 on the individual thread you'd see it was pretty spot on. the concept of the game is a flat out 10/10... maybe even 11/10. but the execution of it is 1/10.........being generous. It's just too much, there are too many fun games out there to be even attempting to make a go at it.

As far as open world goes. There are quit a bit of them. at the peak of WoW when it was most popular there were just TONS of them everywhere, now not so much.

I'm starting to agree with you. I wanted to like it really bad. The no tutorial thing is just so criminal. How hard is it to have a quick in game tutorial? Even styles of games that I'm familiar with or series I know like the back of my hand, I still appreciate a quick refresher in the form of an in game tutorial.

Well you are missing out on a great game. Is not loading because the servers are down or is it the program itself?
