I just wanna know why a guy who just starts bashing everyone and telling people to have thicker skin, starts bleeding from his vagina when someone calls his posts stupid.
Holy ****, football can't come back fast enough. Yes, the name is offensive. Yes, there are thin skinned little babies in this world. No, not every Native American themed mascot need changed(see FSU, UND Fighting Sioux off the top of my head), but some do(see: Cleveland Indians, Washington Redskins). Full disclosure, my HS mascot was the Indians, which ironically was changed to the Patriots.
Redtail Hawks isn't too bad of a name. I don't think the NFL needs another bird team. Washington Presidents Washington MinuteMen Washington Marines Washington Soldiers Washington Americans Washington Revolution Washington Rattlesnakes (due to the don't tread on me flag)
The Washington Pigskins would be my choice if the name was changed. It keeps the skins, and also pays homage to the hogs identity with their fans
Problem is this name has been implanted into the Washington culture since before WW2, the area is not going to easy give up on this name. My mom and her family is from Potomac and its a second home for me since I was a kid so I do know what I'm talking about here.
How many NFL teams have a non-plural name? ZERO. And you're talking about one of the most oldest, proudest and most traditional teams in the league and stick their fans with a name like that? Yeah good luck.
And? Just because no non-plural names doesn't mean there can't be one. What is wrong with sticking their fans with a good name?
It is a good name for a soccer team, not the NFL. If you like I can poll my brother and cousins - all fans of the team - on this name.
This actually has some traction in the DC community, as does Warriors, which I'd be ok with. Love the new avvy, BTW.
Sheesh you are sensitive. Lot of NFL teams have birds or cats as their mascot. I don't know why you are getting so offended.
My bad then, honestly thought you were trying to be cute. I honestly have no clue on which way to go, just know which way NOT to go.
Off of the top of your head, what are 5 names they should consider? I do think Pigskins is interesting, however I am not a fan. Of course it is totally hypothetical at this moment. It is going to be a while before they change.
I can barely think of one lol. How about this - Washington Skins I mean alot of folks call them by that name anyway, just drop the "Red".
People might ask what is a "Skin", well what the hell is a "Giant"? You will have to modify the logo but everything else stays the same.
Are you seriously getting into trademark law because I (a nobody) said I liked a name proposed by another person with no power or say in a situation that isn't even happening yet? Effing really?
Yes, really, I did. Fill this out and give it to someone who cares. http://www.militaryreligiousfreedom.org/legalfiles/gates_letter_sept09/attach_1.pdf
For context: You're not making fun of anyone. That would involve a higher level of sophistication. No one is getting self-congratulatory in this thread other than you, and you've more than made up for everyone else.
They should just change their name to "The Skins" and wear no uniforms. Uhhhmmm on second thought maybe just the cheerleaders with no uniforms.
I grew up in the Washington DC/NVA area and I can understand that the fans that have been there for decades want to keep the name and they really don't associate it with a racist slur, which it is. Just because offense isn't meant doesn't mean it doesn't happen. The change has been overdue for a very long time, its just always been a matter of money, the Redskins make so much money for the area and the owner has so much invested in keeping the name that they don't want to change it. The Redskins are probably a top 5 sports franchise in the United States money wise so it is asking a lot to rename the team. However its something they need to do and are going to be forced by legislation at some point to do if they don't do it voluntarily. The Washington Bullets changed their name for FAR less of a reason but fans got on board with it, its not the end of the world. I mean if the Dolphins changed their name I wouldn't like it but I'd still be a fan, its not that big of a deal.
