The only thing that you said that was a fact was he came In as a freshman and is viewed as a 4th round prospect. The rest of your post was just opinion.
didn't help with Matt Flynn who Oakland just got for a 5th and conditional 2014 pick. Preseason & blowouts alone won't net us a quality return on Barkley. He'd have to fill in for much to all of a season in impressive fashion like Cassel did to get any type of return worthwhile, but he'd first have to supplant Moore on the depth chart, which won't be happening as a rookie, so IMO any return on investment, if at all, would take too long to be worth it.
He won't have to do it as a rookie. He's signing a 4 year contract, not one. Preseason, blowouts, and taking over late In the season will be enough within the next 4 years if he plays well. Hell Schaub barely played and went for two seconds.
no, actually it's a fact he was coached up since he was very young, and done so by the best QB guru in the country, Steve Clarkson. Not to mention what he received at Mater Dei. That's an unfair advantage right there. B/c of this he was versed on X's & O's mechanically developed from an early age; other QBs will gradually catch up to him on this. Barkley simply physically matured earlier than everyone else and it got him into Clarkson's door who sped up his development like no one else received with Mater Dei furthering it. It was a slanted course in Barkley's favor when entering college, but fortunately for these other kids they get a chance to close that gap by also maturing and finally getting solid coaching themselves. I said it nearly 2 years ago that if Tajh Boyd received Barkley's early outstanding coaching and grew up playing for Mater Dei rather than in Hampton, VA that we would've seen Tajh getting all the national attention and hype as a freshman b/c it wasn't talent that had Barkley as the better player back then. Fast forward to this year and you see Boyd easily surpass Barkley as the better player after having the level the playing field by being coached up. Now with another year of coaching and learning under his belt Boyd will cement himself as a first rounder when 2 years ago people would've laughed at the idea of Boyd going well ahead of Barkley. It's also a fact he was media hype b/c the NFL people making the decisions clearly didn't view Barkley the same way. It's also a fact the NFL believes he's just about maxed out b/c he's still on the board. It's also a fact the NFL believes other more talented players will continue developing and surpass Barkley b/c teams are drafting these less productive, less refined players ahead of him.
Having great coaching and development as a young kid is not a negative. Keep thinking that, but you're wrong.
I'd rather continue developing Pat Devlin who's pretty much a Matt Barkley w/o all the prior coaching.
i didn't say it's a negative. I'm saying the coaching allowed him to develop earlier than everyone else and set the tone for this media hype that he's some great talent. I'm saying the other kids who weren't afforded all the early coaching will be afforded it over time; not sure why you think it's exclusive to Barkley. As these other QBs get that extra coaching etc that Barkley was afforded they'll start closing the gap until the more talented ones eventually surpass him. Cmon man, that's what he's STILL on the board. All 32 teams didn't just forget about him, accidentally thinking someone else took him earlier on. It's easy stuff. If you mature early, are groomed early on, and get more reps than everyone else in the country you'll obviously be further along in your development as a freshman & sophomore than your peers who didn't mature early, weren't groomed early, and who weren't afforded extra reps. However as those other QBs got a chance to mature, develop, and gain reps we saw them close the gap and surpass Barkley quite quickly, and it started LAST YEAR with Luck, RG3, and even Tannehill who pushed Barkley into this draft b/c he wasn't going ahead of those guys even though he entered USC well ahead of them on the recruiting trail. Then he entered his senior year thinking it's now his time with those other top QBs of 2012 out of the way, but what happened?....this year's class gets an opportunity to catch him as well and they surpass him, too. Barkley was at USC with the best pair or receivers in the country and he still couldn't make marked improvement from junior to senior year. He's nearly tapped out and the NFL knows it.
Rd #4 106 109 Rd #5 164 166 Rd #6 -0- Rd #7 250 Now what would be fun for me as a faux GM, is if I had those picks, and they were my #1-#3 picks, which players would fill needs for my roster?
Barkley's probably better but I'm not sure it's worth a 4th round pick to barely upgrade a future backup who hasn't done anything to disappoint us in preseason.
Had he entered the draft last year, he would have been a Brown. He was projected ahead of Tannehill. Tannehill didn't push him anywhere. He fell this year due to an apparent poor senior season. There wasn't a close in development from the other prospects. Pick him in the 4th, develop him and trade him for a second. Simple.
How many USC games did you watch? They were painfully predictable on offense and seemed to try to rely on pure talent instead of play calling. You watch some games and swear the defense knows what is coming right when they line up.
If Franklin is there with our first pick in the 4th I would run to the podium to select him. I wouldn't touch Lattimore, he is more of a name than a talent now.
106 - Patton/Swope 109 - Bahktiari/Quessenberry That's what I'm hoping on to start I think. Dion Sims in there would be ok too.
Had a B grade for our draft after the first 3 picks but that silly trade up in the 3rd for a corner with a 5th round grade dropped it down to a C. And when we had picks 77 and 82 wouldn't it have been smarter to use that first 3rd on Wheaton or Goodwin instead of Thomas who probably would've still been there 5 picks later? especially with Buffalo and Pittsburgh on deck and both clearly needing receiver...i mean no surprise they took Goodwin and Wheaton back to back... If we draft Josh Boyce tomorrow I'll raise the grade back up to a B- ...
I wouldn't draft Lattimore period. People will rag on me for that but he isn't the same player he was early on. Even before his latest injury he wasn't running the same.

I have a feeling the fact that the Steelers took Wheaton could have played a role in us trading down...
you don't know that. This is by the same people who said Buffalo loves him and might take him at 8. Nothing changed from last year other than the media rightfully tempering their expectations. He had a poor senior season b/c he's just about tapped out. Playing at USC with the best receiving corps in the country should've been an excuse for a great season had he had more room for development like most juniors do entering their 4th season. Blaming his drop on a "poor season" is the media's way of rationalizing being wrong about him to begin with. He dropped b/c he doesn't have a high ceiling, and he's certainly not Drew Brees 2.0 as he's missing a few key Brees traits for that to happen. And stop with this poor season stuff please. EJ Manuel didn't have any more of an "up year" than Barkley but that didn't stop him from being a 1st rounder. Jake Locker had a "down year" and went 8th. Mike Glennon had more of a down year than Barkley and he's already found a team. 2 of these guys weren't really on the radar last year yet they've surpassed Barkley in the NFL's eyes.
I would draft alex okafor if he's there tomorrow I don't think you can go wrong trying to hit on a de
This is what happens when you have the horizontal drafting... and sorting players into needs, wants, etc.
stop making excuses for him. You whine about it like every other QB was in paradise, with great coaching, a great offense, and outstanding NFL caliber weapons to throw to.
Check this out: A GM who only had 4 picks in the final 4 rds could come away with: -Matt Barkley or Landry Jones -Johnathon Franklin -Quinton Patton -Matt Bakthiari That could make a nice core of an offense
I'm pretty confident in that. Everyone had him as a top 5 pick and rightfully so. If he's tapped out, how did he have excellent Junior season? And how was he projected top 5? Keep using that reasoning but it's false. He's not tapped out potentially. He had a poor senior year so dropped. Simple. It happens to the best of them. Pick him and develop him. Then trade him for a higher pick.
so it doesn't have anything to do with him being injured and unable to work out? He would have been a first round pick in the 2012 draft... we both know this.
Not just first, top 5. He would have been a Brown. He was highly, highly rated. That developmental and coaching excuse is just BS.
his OL was ****. **** with a capital S. Answer me this, how did this vaunted offense you speak of play after Barkley went down?
Lol you're telling me to stop whining when I made one post defending Barkley? Look at how much trash you have thrown his way; post after post after post. I mean this as tongue in cheek as possible but what could Barkley possibly done to you to make you hate him so much?
If the right team takes Barkley tomorrow, they won't regret it. I can see Green Bay, Oakland, San Fran, Seattle or us doing it. Off the top of my head. Would be a great place for him to go in Seattle.
