Sansa Stark is probably one of the more average characters IMO. She's by no means stupid but she's very naive. She continuously sold her family members out [Arya and then later her own father] believing the Lannisters cared for her up until it was plainly obvious they didn't. Even when the queen ordered her direwolf killed she did not grasp how cruel the queen and Joffrey were. She may prove me wrong in chapters I haven't come to yet but for now I'm not overly impressed with Sansa.

Arya Stark is a smarter and stronger character than Sansa IMO.

Daenarys is a great character. Essentially a scared little girl that was bullied by her brother learns to be a ruler through a bad*** horse lord that she was scared to marry to begin with. In the book she's only 13 or 14 when she's forced to marry Khal Drogo.

Mind fried. Several of those did slip past me admittedly. I do remember the mention of Rhaegar crowning Lyanna the queen of love and beauty at the tournament in Harrenhal. I didn't make the other connections to think that maybe Lyanna loved him back. That's something I'm going to be keeping an eye on was I read further. Dany has asked a lot about Rhaegar in this third book. I'm sure some more information will be dropped soon.

Arya is my favorite character (She has the exact same personality as my wife). My wife's favorite? Daenarys, lol.

How old is John Snow in the book?

He's fifteen when the story begins. He's close to the same age as Robb Stark. They aged all of the Stark children for the show except for Sansa. She's thirteen in the show and in the book.

I'm curious how much if book 3 will be in the next season. Without revealing too much I'm wondering if we get the RW this year. If you read the books...you know.

My guess? It's either the end of season 3 or opening of season 4

I'm leaning toward opening season 4 because of the audience shock factor

  7. I agree about Sansa. I was not talking about her seeming smart. I meant his new fiancee. The one he broke his engagement to her for.

If they end season 3 with it, there will be people threatening to bomb HBO so your re probably right.

Can't wait to see the general reaction when it happens :)

Arya has a fascinating story arc. Who and what she becomes is pretty cool.

It is going to be interesting to see if the show is going to take the lead of the storytelling over the books. In the last episode of the season 2, Dany goes into the House of the Undying and tries Westeros' version of LSD. Here the TV show does its own thing in portraying her visions/prophecies. Are the TV show visions going to happen? Does she go to the Wall at some point? What will she find when she gets there?

For those that have read all the books or are otherwise spoiled:

Putting aside that he might be dead, will it be Jon that she meets at the Wall?

Its so sad, I feel like one of those girls in the audience of a Beatles concert. I am way too excited over a TV show.

Some strange changes from the books in this episode. Not going to elaborate due to spoilers. I hope this season and the next live up to the best book I have ever read.

This may sound odd, but there are a million great books out there. But great tv shows are getting harder to come by. I don't want the books to ruin it for me.

This show is so good. There are so many story arcs, and they are all excellent. So rare. Walking Dead has/had weak arcs. Dexter too. But this show is so strong.

Waiting till tonight. My wife goes to bed too early to watch any show coming on at 9 or after. So we always watch it the next day.
But we started 20 days ago watching an episode a night to be caught up and have everything fresh. Watched s2e10 last night.

This show isn't as sexually offensive as the FX shows. Americans and Sons? Not even close.

I only agree with that with book 4 and 5. I thought 1 and 3 were pretty dense books with lots of stuff happening without much wasted space. Then in book 4 and 5 he was taken over by the spirit of Robert Jordan.

If memory serves me right, he originally planned on the story jumping 5 or so years into the future after A Storm of Swords.

    Spoilers up to book 3
Which in my opinion would have been perfect. Arya would be an awesome assassin, Dany would have some experience, ready to march on Westeros. John would have been leading the Wall for a while. Sansa would be learning how to manipulate nobles by little finger. And Tyrion, imo, would have met up with Dany to help her gain her power. Then the story can start, with **** happening, instead of the HUGE STEAMING BALL OF NOTHING in the 4th and 5th books.

However he fell in love with some characters, my guess is Cersei and Brianne and wanted to write their stories. Which, imo, really messed things up. Especially after a bunch of stuff happening in the 3rd book, which I can point out 4 things that would make an amazing ending to season 3 and I have no idea which of these amazing things that happen are going to be the awesome episode 9. I read 4 and then 5 with this feeling of, even though they are both pretty much one book, it is pretty much one book of so little happening. Plus, so little growth.

Yes I think that is right. Well...the the original story was to be 3 books, then 5 books, now 7 books....

I think the 5 year thing is right, but I think some characters like Arya are ahead of others. Jon actually did a lot of stuff, but god knows how martin will work him back in. Yeah Sansa. wtf. She barely did anything. It looks like there is a huge setup for her to put down Littlefinger, but when where and how is anyone's guess. I liked the Cersei chapters for getting into the mind of crazy person, but yeah it was way too much. Oh you didn't like reading Brienne walking around and around and around for a cause you knew was lost? lol.

And then Aegon. How am I supposed to give a crap about this kid? A random blue haired kid introduced in book 4 that never really died and is supposed to be the heir? I'll be fair and add that I like Connington.

I despise the Ironborn and see them as a completely unnecessary detour. I can't say I read those chapters very carefully. I also have to admit I skimmed a lot of the Dany chapters. It doesn't seem like anything bad can really happen to her until she gets to Westeros. Her chapters were full a characters that were confusing and don't seem like they will mean much in the end

I'm struggling to see how books 4 and 5 will make it on the screen. Book 3 is a solid 2 seasons, but 2 seasons of filmable material from books 4 and 5 looks tough. If I, as a book reader didn't give a crap about Euron and Victarion and Brienne walking around, how is a TV audience going to care? Is the TV audience going to wonder when the **** Dany is ever going to arrive. Will they get tired of her talking about taking the Iron Throne when she is making little effort to do so?

Not that you don't remember but in season 1 Tywin ordered The Mountain (Gregor Clegane) to raid the Riverlands and then he rounded up a bunch of smallfolk into Harrenhal. Robb Stark's bannermen would have been caught in the net as well, but in season 2 it looked like most were smallfolk. In last episode they were primarily soldiers to my eyes.

My only guess is that Robb had sent some forces out near Harrenhal and the Mountain caught them and we see the result.

Things have been shuffled a bit. Almost everything that has happened at Harrenhal is different and we shouldn't be done with that ruined castle yet

I think the Cersei POV chapters make her a stronger antagonist in the story. He could have trimmed a lot of fat and advanced many things along faster though I agree. I'm halfway through A Dance with Dragons and have given up on seeing any type of major changes or resolutions. He has created such excellent characters that it's still worth reading to me.
