Great work by Ireland. We have a Top 5 D on paper. fill out the remaining soft spots with all those draft picks...or at least the 5 picks in the Top 100.
Marshall is not up in the air at this point. If Marshall is dumped, who the he!! will play the other side opposite Grimes ?? Patterson ?? Yuuck... Carroll ?? Double Yuuck... Now that may change based on the draft...I still see us going after at least 2 CBs... but he's safe for now, despite Grimes...
This pleases me. Getting a capable CB was a must and we did it. One-year deal makes plenty of sense as well.
What I was thinking as well. Miami had a slow start last year and every CB gets burned. But, even if you took Marshall's productivity stats they'd be pretty good extrapolated out from the 4 games he played (he had 1 int and 5 PDs in 4 games). That would be 4 INT's and 20 PDs (of course doesn't go into other features). Nevertheless - I'd take that. I don't get the Marshall hate at all. Nor the D. Patterson hate. With Carroll, and a healthy Grimes, we would have a pretty good CB group even before what we should come away with in the draft. The other nice thing is that if we have confidence Grimes will be healthy in September, it frees up the draft much more.
I dont understand all the "overpaid" discussion. We have money to spend and need to use it on someone. These one year deals dont possess any long term downside.
In limited practice time and getting picked up late, I thought Patterson did a nice job for us. Maybe last year was a wake up call for him? After being cut by the Browns.
Wonder what kind of money Revis is going to pull in when he's healthy.....IF he gets healthy. Good signing. Could be worth every penny.
Exactly. You can never have too many good cover men. Look what happened last year. Davis gets traded, then Marshall gets hurt. Our outstanding depth was shot. The silver lining was that Carroll got a ton of experience, and with him starting and Wilson, one of the worst cover corners in slot, Coyle still managed to produce a very solid overall defense, other than getting takeaways. Your mock would rock, but I don't think Fluker makes it to 42. Any of those 4 corners have experience in zone, and been very successful.
Not too sure on this one. Did we need a CB? Hell, yes. Did we need an injured CB on a one year contract? I'm not sure we did. I like me some Brent Grimes, but I'd have preferred a two year deal just to make sure we aren't providing in-season recovery services and then get stuck with nothing. I still think we draft a CB relatively high this year.
I don't see adding a CB high as a priority. IMO we have five guys who could be very good in the scheme I expect to see. You still take a CB high (not in the first) if he's a BPA. There's still the injury concern, but based on how strong he looked in those videos, he's pretty close.
Asked his strengths, he said: "I play the ball in the air well. That's why they wanted me here - because of my ability to make plays." Read more here: http://miamiherald.typepad.com/sports-buzz/#storylink=cpy IMO this strength is the significance of the signing. That is an area we lacked last year. Almost all CBs get beat, at least half the time over any long period (3 yrs or so). But the ones that make plays are the few areas where they can have a significant impact.
IMO it's Austin far and away as the most likely pick. After that I would say pass rusher, Jones or Werner and then Eifert or Vacarro.
There's great depth at WR in the 2nd-3rd rounds as well, and we did just sign 3 WRs to multi-year deals in FA, so by your logic it would be a bad idea to draft a slot receiver at 12, no?
I think they're looking to try and create a high turnover defense that gives up intermediate gains but stiffens in the red zone and really ends drives like a Baltimore Ravens defense would. Grimes is one step in that direction. Jonathan Banks in the draft would be yet another guy. These guys are very different from the Nolan Caroll's and Sean Smiths. They play hard and they're football players not athletes becoming football players.
Philbin has consistently said he/we need turnovers. He stated that prior to last season and again reitterated that he/we need much more than were created last year. I am sure if healthy this is a part of Grimes game that they liked and anticipate.
Isn't Grimes a man to man guy? Which brings me back to all this zone talk. Where did it come from? Is this a case of fans just regurgitating what other fans say or has a coach actually stated we re running a lot of zone this year?
I don't think Grimes is a man to man guy. He can do both although the beat writers (Sentinel) mentioned he's stronger in man. That would leave you to believe that the obvious pick at 12 is Xavier Rhodes. Rhodes can play zone, it's not his forte but he can do it. He's a playmaker and a talent at that spot. Then you trade for Brandon Albert in the second.
Maybe not. I thought he was but I honestly don't watch a ton of nfc action. Regardless, where did all this zone talk come from?
Please stop, you're scaring me. I don't care if he's the best slot WR ever he aint worth a 12th overall pick to this team. 100 million in contracts given out on the position and we still need to use a first rounder to bolster it? If I were Ross I'd demand my money back. The only way Austin makes sense to me is if we're planning to ditch being a run first team and throw it 50 times a game. And even then we've still gotta protect the QB with some decent OTs. I'm more worried about making sure we maintain and improve the run game. If we can do that then the WRs we currently have, plus Keller, will be plenty good enough. A 2nd or 3rd rounder with some upside would be icing on the cake, a 1st rounder IMO would be overkill.
It was some mention from Armando that Coyle is a zone guy. I don't think he's a zone guy. They want both out of their guys and they valuable play-making. Xavier Rhodes isn't some scrub in zone, I don't see why he should be out of the picture. Most mocks have him as the Dolphin's pick. I don't remember Cinncy being a zone team the last couple of years outside of their LBs.
Well imo we will most likely go Passrusher since the "big holes" have been filled or maybe OL...we signed big money guys at CB TE and WR.
Don't ignore free safety then if that's the case. There's a reason Clemons deal is a short one. Jordan Poyer fits in the Brent Grimes mold as a playmaker with all around decent physical ability.
If hes back to his pre-injury form and we cant extend him, then we place the franchise tag on him. If hes not fully recovered, we let him walk after the year and dont have to worry about a bad salary eating into future cap years, where our financial health may not be as healthy as it is today.
Elam is a guy that seems to have fallen off the radar screen… not many people talking about him. Would love to have him but that would have to be after a trade down.
So basically all this zone talk fans keep pounding the table about is just an assumption? I'm pretty sure Grimes is more of a man guy. Which he should be, doesn't make a lot of sense to have a lock down type CB playing zone. In my opinion you play zone the majority of time only when you don't have the talent to shadow a CB. Good qbs typically feast off zone. I was just curious where all this zone talk came from.
Giving up a 2nd round pick for a guy that really didnt play that well last year AND is going to demand LT money is how
I do have to give Ireland props for all these moves. Look at the Browns, they have a ton of cap space and haven't done a god damn thing outside of Kruger.
Gotta disagree with you buddy ole pal. We dished out money to two starting perimeter receivers and minimal money for their backup. Bess will be gone, leaving a hole in the slot. IMO dishing out $100 million means we need to bring in a guy like Austin who helps us get the MOST out of that $100 million + the 1st round investment in Tannehill. If we can pay Patterson 4.5M to cover the slot we certainly can use a 1st on Austin to play the slot, as well as offer that Xfactor element. I don't recall it being stated Philbin's desire is to be a run first team. ??? Will we be a run first team when we're looking to spread out the offense more frequently? I thought we were run first last year out of necessity (mainly b/c we had nothing at WR). If you want to draft a tackle with our 1st round pick then you're essentially talking about using pick 2b to trade up for Fisher or Johnson, which IMO is too much for a tackle. If we're using 2b as a trade up, then package it with 2a to move up for the athletic Terron Armstead [whom we're interested in] and leave the 1st pick open for a rare player like Austin who doesn't come along every year b/c we can find decent tackles & zone corners every year, in more than just the first round, and in just about every FA. IMO the difference in impact between a good and elite tackle is slighter than the difference between a good and elite slot corner/Xfactor. I'm wore worried about getting Tannehill a full array of weapons and seeing the pass game really take off. Hey, since when did you become ok with Hartline as an answer at WR? It all depends on what type of role you want filled from the slot. If Irland & Philbin want an Xfactor type to open up the playbook and scheme possibilities then a traditional 2nd/3rd round slot receiver won't cut it. IMO Tavon could easily become the focal point of the offense [after Tannehill] that everything revolves around; I feel that type of impact is worth #12.
There is no doubt in my mind that the Dolphins DB situation right now is better than it was at any time last year. I'll take Grimes over Smith (even Marshall is more productive). Marshall will be healthy and will be an upgrade at the other CB spot. Patterson too will be better as he will have an entire off-season in this defense. And, I think Carroll will be improved as well - he has more experience and more plays under his belt and he's still young. Actually will take this group at the start of this season over the past two seasons. I think they will be much more professional than the talented Smith and Davis. And, these guys are much more productive in terms of PDs and INTs than Smith has ever been. At the same time, we retain two safeties who still have room to improve and will be better. Really love this move and like our DB situation right now. Not perfect and I'd still try to land a couple of young guys in the 2-7th rounds.
