Something that can't be ignored in this signing is that it is for 2 years. Both Soliai and Starks are FA next year along with a mess of other starters that need to be signed.
well here is my highly anticipated....Thoughts from the other side (TFTOS) http://forums.chargers.com/showthread.php?t=97784
If this guy is part of a design to replace either Soliai or Starks, we are in serious serious deep poohpooh. Smelly, sticky Ginger colored Poohpooh.....
IMO, either Odrick or Misi needs to be upgraded with someone who offers more pass rush and can play in the base defense, if not both.
Paul Soliai isn't that good that Vaughn Martin with some technical growth couldn't reasonably replace him.
Coaching up is the name of the game for this team. Several players need a ton of coaching up at just about every position.
They way we talk about guys being over the hill at 30 on this board makes me feel like 90 when I am just turning 50 this year LOL! I understand the age window in the NFL, but good grief.
Holy Crap!!! You're turning 50 this year? Honest question, did you have slaves when you were little? What were those wooden tires on cars like?...did they even have cars????
We had Pacers and Gremlins, and I don't mean the basketball team and little devils. Look up those cars if you haven't seen one. Classic.
Ahhh, good ole AMC. Brings me back to the days of the Mighty Maverick. Of course I've seen a Pacer. There was one in Waynes World
At this point in their careers I'm more confident with a player like McDaniel in relief over Randall.
Here's a Chargers scout telling Vaughn Martin not to hold back at his pro day.

Pardon the pun Mr C, AZ and Lee2k were discussing being old so what better to slyly bring up signing Vaughn then referencing the Man from U.N.C.L.E?
Vaughn Martin's profile before the 2009 draft: http://www.nfldraftscout.com/members/ratings/profile.php?pyid=70788
I just had to stop watching Vaughn Martin's tape. I literally couldn't watch anymore as Antwan Barnes tore **** up as a pass rusher in his limited opportunities. 3 years, $4 million. A New York Jet. I'm going to throw something. It didn't help that Vaughn was less than inspiring. He's one of those guys that damn well needs a scheme change because he's on his last ropes. On the bright side there were a few glimpses in passing situations where he played a little bit more of a penetrating style and did OK with it. On the negative side the fact that he's 330 lbs and I can't figure out where the hell he hides it doesn't seem to matter because nobody that's blocking him seems to see that 330 lbs either. He just can't overwhelm anyone with power for some reason. His hand use is not all that good, not very well coordinated. Gets kind of overextended and loses his power base. I still like the GAMBLE aspect of this signing because you're taking a guy with tremendous physical attributes that was just completely incapable of looking interesting as a two-gap player and you're trying to see if he'd look more interesting in your nickel defense on the interior...but the odds here do seem low. And the fact that he's making nearly twice what Antwan Barnes is making... ...I shut off the tape.
Well, there are the drug problem rumors with Barnes. Once caught he wont be sacking anyone but his cellmate. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
yeah its unreal how time flies, some days ago, i saw him in the magnificent seven and now he has already signed with the dolphins.
yeah it´s really strange, barnes seems to be a free agent every year now, gets basically paid very little given his sack numbers and we never get involved, does he have a history off the field ? maybe that "new" approach of character players only, is in the way
The Dolphins view defensive lineman Vaughn Martin, who agreed to terms with Miami on Thursday, as an upgrade over Tony McDaniel in their d-line rotation. Martin, who can play end or tackle, started 12 games for the Chargers as a 3-4 end last season, and Pro Football Focus ranked him just 33rd of 34 qualifying 3-4 ends, including 30th against the run. He had one sack. Martin started 15 games for the Chargers in 2011. He has three sacks in four NFL seasons. But several teams reportedly were interested in him. He could play some end in Miami's 4-3 if needed, but his primary role likely will be as a member of the tackle rotation with Paul Soliai and Randy Starks. All this being said, IF any of the teams we play line Scout's up as offensive linemen, I think we are set
We could really use an Picard facepalm or some sort of "not this **** again" image, you macro inclined peoples. For all his physical ability I'm not sure they line him up wide. His struggle on PFF pass rushing seems a lot of the time coming from when he's asked to be the outside guy.
Oh, I don't know. I think it depends on where the other team lines up their blocking sled riding scouts....
Yes, he was ranked lower in the PASS RUSHING aspects from a few charts you can find online, but when you watched Barnes fly around on tape untouched it was usually because V.Martin was eating up a double team. You should also point out that he was a Top 10 run stuffer as a 3-4 D end in 2011 and still top 20 this past season according to the same metrics & websites. Was misused in SD, not only did he not play NCAA ball, but he played 3 tech at a Canadian college, and also never had experience in a 3 man front. I expect big things in Miami...shouldn't have an issue with learning the system, scored a 38 on the wonderlic.
This. When a person just watches tape and fails to apply the proper context they are usually disappointed. i too expect good things from Martin. Great post!
