Some interesting tidbits in here on how Wallace will make the offense better while also possibly hurting the Steelers offense. Some interesting quotes from Philbin as well on how teams might have to tilt zones towards his side of the field or declare a safety early. Good stuff.... http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/NFP-Sunday-Blitz-7873.html Of all the players who have changed teams so far this offseason, the one who has the potential to affect two offenses the most is Mike Wallace. The old Steeler and the new Dolphin wide receiver might not be the most productive acquisition in the NFL next year. But if he is healthy, he is almost certain to have a major impact on the way the Dolphins do their offensive business. And his absence is certain to affect the Steelers.
Brian Hartline will earn every dollar with Wallace on the other side. Im more excited for Hartline than I am Wallace. (although a WR who can actually beat a DB to the endzone SHOULD be fun...)
Halo effects don't work unless the person generating the halo can actually produce. Wallace being fast is by itself not a big deal; Tannehill has to get the ball to him in order to free up Hartline. We should at least finally know if Hartline's career efficiency numbers are an illusion.
I've been saying this for a while. His statistical production may never live up to his contract, but I feel his impact will.
It seemed to be his biggest weakness in college. At the same time, I'm guessing deep ball accuracy is one the hardest parts of being a QB. Maybe part of the problem is that he's only had 19 starts in college and this past year had a pedestrian wr corp whose #1 wr wasn't even around in the preseason. Not making excuses, just spit balling to see if there's plausible reasons that might have solutions.
Teams absolutely will double and triple cover Mike Wallace, if they can. They double and triple covered Ted Ginn, even after it was apparent he wasn't a #1 guy.
Sounds like common sense to me.. I don't see any inherent signs that T hill is not good at throwing the deep ball, he was rushed by his own inner clock last year, we need to hope he speeds up his Qb functionality and the game in his head slows down.. The kid only played from the pocket reading coverages for two years..he exclusively worked out of a wishbone offense in high school and we all know how his college exp played out.. I'm really hoping the two things I mentioned will improve dramatically, because imo they are the only two things that I'm concerned about.
I don't think Tannehill has any problems throwing deep. Looking at the metrics of his from profootballfocus, you see he actually did fairly well with his highest rating on the routes going to the right over 20 yards. The same with the deep middle. He did however struggle with throws to the deep left. All in this article from phinfever.com, a decent read for sure. As others have said, the balls that grazed Hartline's fingers or Bess just couldn't run under, Wallace will track those down....same with Austin or Patterson too http://www.phinfever.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=8708&p=106429
What do you find interesting in there? I honestly, not trying to be a jerk or something. I really just saw coach speak and a guy who said "We might replace him with someone similar or totally different"
i know that, based on hearsay, Philbin supposedly wanted Jennings. But whether or not that's true doesn't matter. I sincerely doubt Philbin was against having the fastest wr in the game.
I've thought the same thing - the man who will benefit the most is Mr. Hartline. He will have the pressure off of him "to be the man", and will draw less talented players in coverage who will be all over Wallace. I know Mr. Hartline is not a popular player on this board, but I think by this time next year we'll be touting some pretty hefty number for him - but it all depends on Ireland, and how he fixes that OLine.
Hearsay?? I never heard that...all was speculation by the media based on association...did I miss this?
In some ways it's the same, but Ginn isn't even close to the deep threat Wallace is. There's more to being a successful deep threat than simply speed and no one does it as well as Wallace. And unlike Ginn, Wallace does other things well.
He was being sarcastic. The notion that Philbin didn't want Wallace was ridiculous once the Dolphins showed interest, and is even more ridiculous now when you hear him talk about Wallace.
Even in high school he didn't play QB all four years, so he's got a lot of learning left to do. He'll get there, I have no doubts about that.
