Just asking...would you take Duane Brown of Houston as your LT?

Reason I ask is cause his stats and metrics :were as bad as Martin when they were rookies....

He's an awful RT, but he will be a fine LT.

He may have statistically done better at RT but he looked more natural at LT. It'll take time, even when he was drafted no one said he's going to come in and play that well. I'll tell you this much, in terms of running the ball in a ZBS I'd take LT-Martin/RT- Winston over LT-Long/RT-Martin. You wonder how Jake is going to look in a couple of years.

People treat PFF as if it is God. It's a piece of information but I don't think it is always indicative.

Martin clearly needs to improve significantly - mainly by getting in better shape & stronger. He needs the off-season workout regimen badly. But I also think he needs improved technique. However, I think he can be as good or better than Long ca.2012.

In some ways the Incognito campaign was a diss of Martin. I hope it motivates him.

But there is also this to remember:

I say sign Vollmer who can play both tackle spots in a pinch, and keep Martin on the right side until he proves himself. I'm not ready to just hand him the immense responsibility that comes with playing LT.

I would prefer that Martin plays RT and that the Dolphins find another LT in free agency or in the draft. The expectation of those who feel he will improve at the position is tempered by the possibility that he won't and this might end up causing Tannehill to get injured.

Ireland should do everything he can to find a better replacement for Long in 2013. Perhaps in a few years Martin MIGHT develop into a decent starting LT in the NFL, but is it worth the risk to Tannehill to take that chance this coming season? I don't think so.

I remember when Houston picked him, the on air draft day hacks were bashing the Texans hard. So much for these experts. Hopefully Martin's trajectory is the same.

It's not unreasonable to expect rookies (especially those moved around on the line) to improve and sometimes improve greatly from their rookie season to their second season. In fact much of this team is built on the premise of projection. Considering the starting point is 7-9, I don't think this is a bad idea.

I also imagine the Texans fans were bashing Brown after his rookie season just as hard as Dolphins fans bash Martin now.

Brown moved up to middle of the pack among tackles in his 2nd year, and from his 3rd year on has been in the upper echelon of NFL offensive tackles.

I don't have the access to PFF you do, whats the PBE for each during their rookie seasons? The number of pressures given up by Martin seems to be abnormally high.

I thought, just from watching and not using metrics or whatever, that he was alright in the last few games after he adjusted to the left side. He is getting an entire offseason to improve his strength, an entire offseason of OTA's and a training camp at left tackle. I think he will be fine....and then the OP can find something else to stand on his soapbox about.

Brown was bad, playing LT all year, but Martin was worse.
Brown 2008: 72nd overall rating. -14.2 pass block rating. 11 sacks, 14 hits, 25 pressures. 50 total disruptions.
Martin 2012: 76th overall rating. -17.5 pass block rating. 6 sacks, 4 hits, 47 pressures. 57 total disruptions.

Was the rate of disruptions per game changed at all after the move from RT to LT? Or was it the same, or worse? I also have to keep in mind Martin didn't practice on the left until the end

Perhaps he will dramatically improve at LT in his second season, but what if he doesn't and they don't have a solid LT to plug in the spot. I would just like to see how he develops at RT in 2013 before I see the Dolphins coaching staff make the move to LT a permanent move for Martin.

He has a lot of room for improvement as an NFL tackle and Tannehill is still learning to play QB in the NFL. This is a bad scenario as far as I am concerned and that is why I want the Dolphins to add a veteran who can play LT in 2013. Perhaps Martin will improve his play in his 2nd NFL season and will be ready to take over the LT position in 2014. I would love to see the Dolphins sign Winston or Vollmer for the LT position in 2013.

At some point in time, you have to develop some belief that your scouts can identify quality players and that your coaching staff can develop them. You can't keep plugging every position manned by an unproven young player with a high priced free agent.

Since he moved to LT early in the 1st NE game, I'm counting 5 at LT, 11 at RT.
@LT he gave up 2 sacks, 2 hits, and 17 hurries in the last 5 games.
@RT he gave up 4 sacks, 2 hits, and 30 hurries in the first 11 games.

Long gave up 4 sacks, 7 hits and 10 hurries in the 11 games + 11 plays that he played.

Ok try not to laugh because I'm asking an honest but yet ignorant question. :shifty: I don't understand the argument that Martin will be good at LT. He clearly sucked playing RT and was less pathetic as the LT. Does the guy have a better left leg or left arm that makes him perform better on the left side?:confused2: It seems to me Expecting Martin to significantly improve is a gamble at best. He really hasn't been reliable playing LT or RT. I keep reading the Duane Brown analogy but that is taking a huge leap of faith. Can he develop into an above average LT?...I certainly hope so.

BTW, this year may be the first time fans freak out because Irish passes on a top OL prospect in the 1st round....oh the irony!!!

All I have to do is look at the players the Dolphins have drafted over the past five years to question the ability of the scouts for the Dolphins. The Dolphins have had a losing record each of the last four seasons with the talent these scouts have identified. You obviously have a lot more belief in the Dolphins scouts than I do.

The reality is that the Dolphins have actually had better luck in free agency, (Bess- Carpenter-Wake-Dansby- Starks- Moore-Burnett-Incognito-Fields). Also the trades for Marshall, Bush, and Fasano were much better than the the majority of the players drafted over the past five years.

It would appear that the better players on the Dolphins roster came to them either through free agency or in a trade. Perhaps the scouts and Ireland are better with identifying proven talent over players who are coming into the league directly from college.

Hopefully the scouts and Ireland will do a better job in the draft this year than they have done in the previous five years.

I think the best possible thing that could happen at this point in time would be the Dolphins sign one or two OT's and draft another one.

Use Jonathan Martin in a draft day trade and get really, really lucky with the value obtained.

Id be happy if Jon Martin just played bad this year it would be a big improvement over last year:yes: The problem with him is he just has no natural football strength to him.(Your either born with that or your not) Hes a 310lb man but has the strength of maybe 150lb man.You can see how he gets tossed around like a rag doll all the time. And please dont say throw him in the weight room all offseason.

I think the key point is that he was not ready to handle the NFL.

He has the size and skill to do the job (the fact that while his statistics were bad - he still made blocks most of the time).

The question for Martin is - is he willing to work his butt off and actually get a lot stronger (he was not that strong coming in - one could see it); in better athletic condition; and work diligently - meaning extra hours - to get his footwork and technique improved. If he is dedicated to the extra hours that takes - I think he has a legit shot at becoming a good LT.

But, those are all big question-marks at this point and that's not a comforting thought.

Ya know everything you Martin fans say about Jonathan Martin is doubly true about the guy behind him, Jeff Adams.

Adams is way,way more athletic,is an Ivy league graduate, has great character and really loves the game and is a hard worker.

And Adams is taller, has longer arms and bigger hands. Adams was also very successful in college, only at Columbia.

Why aren't you guys talking about his potential to be a good LT?

I mean really, by this kind of reasoning Adams should be a lock to be a solid LT.

However, I find it troubling, in the case of Adams that he couldn't even get ahead of Will Yeatmen on the depth chart, and Yeatmen couldn't even get any snaps when when Martin was getting literally run over.

I tell you who does love Jonathan Martin, Aldon Smith. He would like to play against him every Sunday.

    Hyperbole.

Few, if any, would deny that Martin was not all that good last year, but Clark Kent was correct in his post above (Post # 264) where he said extrapolating the play of his rookie year to his talent ceiling would be a mistake. Likewise, Da Fins is exactly right to say that the key was that Martin just wasn't ready to handle the NFL, and I think that was mainly from a strength/speed of the game issue. he can absolutely work on that. Plenty of offensive linemen aren't ready their first or even second year but develop over time to have decent careers. As an example, the Dolphins drafted Wade Smith years ago in the Wannstedt/Spielman regime. He didn't start off well, and the fanbase was all over the guy and eventually the coaching staff lost patience as well. Smith bounced around a little, but he got much better and ended up having a decent little career. In fact, I think he's still playing with the Texans, a playoff team.

Jonathan Martin, by all accounts, is a smart guy, and his own play and what he needs to do could hardly be lost on him. Much the same, the coachinng staff seems to at least have some faith that he's going to take a leap in his sophmore campaign because they're not jumping balls out to sign someone else for him. Yes, they wanted Long back, but they ended up letting him go. There actually seems to be more effort in trying to replace John Jerry than there does doing anything about Martin. Last year, the Dolphins were in a position where they had to throw him into the fire. While he wasn't quite ready, it's not like our line was owned in the running game, nor did Tannehill find himself on his butt all the time (like Jay Cutler did) when dropping back to pass. Martin allowed too many pressures, but he played the whole year and was marginally improved by the end of the season from where he started.

Point being, Martin's a guy the coaching staff thinks they can live with at left tackle, and he was drafted with that position in mind just in case they did lose Jake Long. That's happened, and now the eventuality has become fruition. It might not be altogether comforting, but from the actions I've seen to this point, the coaching staff and front office seem to have a good bit more faith in Martin than the fanbase, and they see the same tape footage we do... just a lot more of it. And they see more of him than we do.

Lastly, if you're going to state, "please don't say throw him in the weight room all offseason", I guess I'd like to know what your better solution is than him getting stronger and hard work to better himself at the position. Hope? Or conversely, just cut him? Is that where you're going with this?

I hope you are right. My problem with Martin, beside his overall mediocre play last season, is that he really didn't play well in college against quality DE's. In fact in his senior year, he was made to look like a below average tackle when he played against, Nick Perry from USC. Perry used him like a rag doll for most of the game.

Martin is intelligent, and he certainly can get stronger. I just don't know if he will ever be more than a mediocre tackle in the NFL. Long only lasted for one contract term as a Dolphin. Hopefully Martin can last through his rookie contract as a member of the Dolphins. Personally I will be very surprised if Martin is still a Miami Dolphin in three years.

I think the other thing people forget, is that RT was not is natural position for Martin. Even Wake likes one side of the line over the other and his numbers show it. And if the rusher can have varying effectiveness based on the side he's rushing from, surely a blocker can have varying effectiveness based on the side he's on.....especially as a rookie.

Enough about last year, you guys waste more time everyday. I'd love to see this flawed logic put on display with a large sample size. How many future hall of famers would you have given up on after 1 year ? Martin is going to have a full offseason. No going to back to stanford to graduate, no coming back late to the hard knocks circus. He'll being given the opportunity to take the LT spot by the horns. You say he sucks, I say he was one of the 64 best tackles in the world the moment he was drafted, with a chance to get better.

Martin was terrible last year, he was a rookie so you don't give up on him. That said it would be idiotic to go into the season counting solely on him to improve. We need to have some competition at LT/RT and he needs to be pushed. We'd be wise to spend one of our first 4-5 picks on a tackle and to pick up a vet. His play was so bad that it was alarming, I don't get why anyone would sugar coat it, he was one of the worst tackles in the league last year. Even for a rookie that has to be alarming. Do we give up on him? No. However we don't throw away a season watching our young Qb running for his life or throwing the ball away every other play because our 2nd year LT doesn't get it. His lack of strength was particularly troubling, the guy just isn't strong enough to take on the really good pass rushers in the NFL, I'm not sure how much progress you can make in an offseason in the weight room, but hopefully its a lot.
