You're not qualified to say, unless you are a graphic designer. ;)

For you to call someone arrogant is kind of an oxymoron dude...

I was simply stating that you, as a graphic designer, could have been more clear by saying what you think. By grouping yourself with every single graphics designer (making their minds up for them) on the board was what led me to think the exact same thing Mr. Clean did. However, I did think about it again and thought na, he could not have meant it like that. It's just him..

And it is not fact that the craftsmanship was poorly done. The coloring of it could have definitely been done better but there is nothing wrong with it's shape or the shape of the sunburst. That is subject to ones opinion to like the way it looks or not.

I'm not going to end this post with some assinine comment about you because it is something you seem to feed on at times. BUT I will suggest you take a good ol fashion chill pill or a chug off some strong booze if that works.

Another "arrogant designer" stepping in here... :p

The original logo wasn't the greatest from a craftsmanship perspective. A lot of sloppy lines, no symmetry, and a bit too intricate for a logo. It didn't read well at all distances and at small sizes. Heck, even the designer himself said that he didn't think it was his best work. He was working on a tight deadline (2 days), and it didn't come out the way he had hoped. That being said, it worked for the times. It fit the profile of other AFL logos of the time, and it portrayed the fun, vibrant atmosphere of both Miami and of the fun new football league - the AFL.

I absolutely abhor logos of anthropomorphic animals wearing sports equipment. It looks tacky as hell and looks extremely dated as that is a fad that has long ago (thankfully!) passed.

However, the pre-97 logos have a certain charm about them that appeals to me and to others. I can't quite pinpoint it, and it just may be the history of the team and the associations with all the great teams, but that logo means something. It has some appeal. All of that was utterly destroyed with the 97 redesign. The "update" turned the logo into a caricature of itself. Now the dolphin was turned into some Disney reject parody of the original logo. All the timeless appeal and charm of the original logo was replaced by a silly cartoon representation of the dolphin looking its best to look tough, but only managing to look constipated.

From a design perspective, it was overly complex for a logo, and did not read well at all distances. The color pallette change to darker teal green also further diminished the Dolphins brand. It no longer had a fresh appeal about it, like the aqua and coral had, this color scheme was glum and foreboding, clashing terribly with the "fun" essence it was meant to imbue.

Unfortunately, the classic logo can't function as an effective logo in today's age. It doesn't fit the portfolio of the other NFL team logos, so it would disrupt the branding of the NFL. All the unclean lines, and sloppy appearance was acceptable in the mid-60s since design tools and processes were not the most advanced, but it simply looks amateur today compared to the current logos across the league. I think the classic looks great on fan gear. It brings you back to that time. It is a fun respite from the modern world. And I also think it would be great if the Dolphins rocked out those throwbacks from time to time, but it simply wouldn't work as a main logo anymore.

While the new logo does have its failings, it is undoubtedly a superior logo from purely an aesthetic and design perspective. I think it will grow on more people as it becomes associated with winning teams and once they see it more often paired with the new uniforms and helmet.

I am not sure how old you are, but I definitely think the current logo appeals to kids. It has the same look as other classic cartoon characters that kids love, like Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse. But once you get a little older, and a bit more sophisticated, you just come to think the thing looks silly and juvenile. It doesn't fit the brand of a football team, unless we are talking about a Pop Warner football team. It certainly looks silly seeing a bunch of roided up grown men bashing each other's heads in while wearing a goofy cartoon dolphin on their helmet...

Litmus test, have you guys shown the new leak to your non-Dolphin fan friends? Their thoughts? Impressed? Unimpressed?

I did, just wanted to take my fandom out of it and get fresh non-bias look at the logo(as you know I hate it). I was hoping I would run into a Jacksonville Jaguars type experience where the fans hate it but everyone else around the league find it impressive. Unfortunately, like I feared, got negative feedback(specifically laughs).

    I appreciate the entire post.
As far as the bold part goes: screw the rest of the NFL and how it affects their branding.
Our traditional logo might look amateurish compared to the NFL's current ones but I'm not sure the relevance when half the league still adheres to a traditional logo that they featured in the 70's.

Got the same reaction from my non dolphin fan friends, the jet fan I know ate it up. When I showed people the other one that's in the same pose as the current logo with no helmet that ellerbe put on twitter, (that I think could look really nice with some tweeks in a few different areas) I got positive reactions from everybody. I bet if you took that logo through the dolphins locker room you would get the same reaction.

I'm in my mid-twenties, so that might have something to do with it. I have had my fiancee' tell me on several occasions that it's the least intimidating logo in the NFL. And she didn't even start watching football until last season.

    Still though, I like it

I'm old enough to be your father, and I guess I'm still not sophisticated because the current logo does not look silly or juvenile to me. Nor does it remind me of Donald Duck, or Mickey Mouse. :pity:

Count me as one of those who disliked the pre-96 logos. I also dislike the effete, almost-pastel coloring of the past. Teal (which is what it was) and an orange so light it wouldn't be out of place in a coral reef might work in the WNBA, but not in the NFL. I much prefer the present aqua, orange, navy, and white.

I didn't make up any graphic designer's mind for them. That's the point you guys are incapable of grasping. The poor craftsmanship is indisputable fact. Its not my opinion. I am not arrogant for stating a fact. You guys are arrogant for saying a fact isn't true.

Again, people in a given profession are qualified to say what is done well in their given profession and its not arrogance. This is the worst part about my chosen profession is that people like you are arrogant enough to tell me I'm wrong about the craftsmanship quality of a logo/design. Its mind boggling.

And yeah, i should have been more clear than this:
    I'm so freaking cryptic......

The Dallas Cowboys logo is simple, iconic and one of the most recognizable logos in the world, let alone the NFL.

You can like the logo or not. Liking it is subjective. However, it is objectively done well.

    Take these two versions:

Version A is the actual logo and version B is a poorly done version. Am I arrogant for saying version B is poorly done? Am I arrogant for saying all graphic designers would say version B is horribly done? No.

Can people still like version B? Sure. Do people liking it, make it well done? No, not at all.

As bad as version B may look to non graphic designers in terms of craftsmanship, the old dolphins logo looks as poorly done to graphic designers (and many non graphic designers). That is not arrogance. That is fact just as the poor craftsmanship of version B is fact.

Arrogance comes into play, when non graphic design professionals come in and proclaim, I don't care what graphic designers say, that logo is not poorly done. That is the very definition of arrogance.

Color scheme, jersey print, striping, font...we need to see how it all comes together. Everyone wants to be wowed so bad. It's probably not possible.

One if the recent changes I hope they keep is the metallic white base color in the helmet. I love that.

And I thought it'd have been cool if maybe the sunburst was implemented in the stripe down the center of the helmet. It opens up new design schemes too.

I don't sit around all day and play on a computer, so I may not be qualified to say this, but IMO, the leaked logo sucks. It's poorly done. The old logo is so much classier.

Actually that is not. That is taking the original leaked and applying the colors the best you could. The new logo is not as arched and the sun bursts are longer peaks. Not to mention you haven't seen the tail so there is no telling the colors or shading there.

Look at this logo you did next to the one on the sleeve and they are different.

If you are referring to my rendering, yes, the sun is from the old leaked logo, but everything else is consistent with the new leak. I guessed at the shading on the tail. I also guessed on the position of the final logo, but that is my best supposition. I am assuming they want to represent the dolphin on a "launch" trajectory...

I'd say it's still opinion man...

Simply because graphic design is a purely human concept and I don't believe purely human concepts can be right or wrong, good or bad. Especially when they can't be tested in some concrete way. Maybe I should say "abstract human concept".

I'm not talking about the concept, I'm talking about the execution. The execution is not subjective.

The execution of B is objectively poor.

Understand the parts of design are:

    Concept: That is subjective
    Layout: That is subjective.
    Execution: That is NOT subjective.
