It's not even funny, though. Insulting for the sake of humor is fine but when overused and lame? It destroys credibility from the onset. I knew I was likely campaigning to deaf ears but hey, what can ya do. Personal preference and all that. I remember when I was young I did that stuff as well, so no worries there.

On a note of RT... if we don't sign Winston then I'll be flat out shocked and confused. Huge need? System fit? Money available? It's all there.

I think the draft is wide open. Any one of 4 or 5 positions could be addressed. Not that I believe it will happen, but if Miami gets a fourth as a comp. pick and gets a fourth in a trade for Bess, they would be loaded for bear with some serious needs in the secondary and on the ol.

Apparently Nate Garner is on his way back. People keep saying Lane Johnson won't be there at 12. Ok...but don't we have the ammunition to leapfrog the Chargers to get him?

    Sigh.

Credibility? Credibility as what....unbiased observers? Is that what you want on ThePhins.com?

What's not funny is when people take themselves too damn seriously.

    F^ck the Pats.
    F^ck the Bills.
And most certainly, f^ck the Jets.

The Pats cheated and this is not a site about the NFL.

If you want something different, then maybe its you that made a mistake.

I think it would be more Cruz, they have first hand knowledge of losing that type of skillset when Garçon departed.

If we're trading up for anybody it should be Milliner.

Other than that, sign a veteran tackle. Still plenty out there to get you through a season or two

I just think it'll be too cost prohibitive to move to the top five for Milliner.

Besides, I think this off-season is showing a shift in the league as it pertains to the cornerback position. You need three to play at anytime and it is difficult to pay three CBs. This has brought the cost down. With the new rules, even the best ones are getting beat with some regularity. I think teams will continue to focus on the pass rush (as we have) and try to "get by" at cornerback.

They're off Cruz because Irsay came right out and said it's not Cruz.

There are rumors in Seattle that it's Doug Baldwin so we're just joining the circus on this one.

I think Miami may be interested in Armstead, the kid from Arkansas Pine Bluff I believe. Why trade when you may not have to do so. I generally believe Miami is set on moving Martin to his natural fit on the left side. It is up to the kid to do the work, but I am sure Philbin, being an oline coach in the past, will keep an eye on things. Garner is valuable as a backup and can play all 5 spots on the line. I really want Austin with 12, and don't want to overreact to Long's departure. I belive Miami had already planned for his departure before this weekend.

Yeah, I heard Irsay said it wasn't Cruz, and I did hear the rumors regarding Baldwin. Anybody's guess, but wouldn't it be nice to get an extra fourth in this draft?

Austin is a generational talent. He adds so much to the offence not to mention giving us the big play threat on special teams. I tend to think he's the target at 12.

You're right, zone blocking teams rarely take o-linemen high in the draft. Besides, Martin should be fine after an off-season of strength training.

I would rather have Vollmer also, but he will probably be looking to sign for at least as much money as Long got from the Rams. Winston is the most likely replacement, but that will only be a short term resolution at the tackle position. It would not surprise me in the least if the Dolphins don't take one of the top tackles in this years draft if one of them happens to slide down to them at 12. This most likely would be Oklahoma's Lane Johnson, but most recent mock drafts have him being picked before the Dolphins select in the first round.

For all those who are already upset with the Rams for signing Cook and Long and for Fisher taking the Rams head coaching position instead of the Dolphins HC job. Be perhaps to be upset again, because I think it will be the Rams who end up drafting Austin with one of their two first round draft picks.

After signing two WR's in free agency, I just don't see the Dolphins drafting a WR until at least the 3rd or 4th round of the 2013 draft.

You know, I really hate this argument, and I really hate the widespread usage of it in the media.

There is one key difference between acquiring a player in trade (and RFA) and between drafting a player: the former players are typically proven.

For every Joe Thomas drafted, there's a Jason Smith (which, ironically, put the Rams in the position to pursue Long in the first place). On the other hand, everyone knows what Branden Albert is. For the sake of expanding the argument, everyone knows what Victor Cruz is. THAT is what you are paying for--a known commodity. Elite players rarely hit the open market, especially at LT.

If there were players that were "bust proof," then it'd be easy to want to trade your entire team away for picks every year. There aren't, though, and that's why it doesn't happen.

Furthermore, Albert's play never came close to Jake's in his prime, he does have a sketchy back, and he could demand a trade. IMO, he could be had for a mid-round pick, and he would most certainly not get a contract on the scale of Long's

I do agree on one thing, though: It would've been better to just re-sign the one good LT on the market: Long.

The market now is crap for LT, so you're looking at signing a RT and committing Martin to LT (a huge concern), or you draft a LT and hope he can play at at least an average level from day 1. I think a 3rd or 4th round pick, plus a $6-7 annual contract for Albert is the safer bet. If you disagree on that, I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.

    Sadly, I concur.

If the Rams get Austin and we go CB or DE at #12 or trade up for OT .... I will puke ... and it will probably come out looking like Jeff Ireland's face. (But, I'm no expert so who knows - yet I suspect we will regret that).

Well, why not roll the dice on Jason Smith?

Quietly he played quite well for the Jest, he will be cheap etc

Also, consider which positions will be the most expensive to fill, then plan on filling one of them via the draft.

Cb's and OLmen typically can come in and start quickly, pass rushing De's are a different thing as they tend to be boom or bust so we may be better served signing a De and just drafting a Cb/OL

IMO, Jerry's best spot is RT. If we go OL, I'd rather take Jonathan Cooper to play LG, move Richie to RG, and kick Jerry out to RT.

What if we sign Winston, Abraham and a veteran corner before the draft? Right now we have one WR who is best suited for the slot and that's Bess, of course. This is his last season of his contract. I see no less chance that Austin is the pick at 12, unless someone takes him before we pick.

The fact of the matter is, it's far too early to predict whom Miami may draft in the 1st with any degree of accuracy or certainty.

Jaws recently stated Austin is a top 15 pick. He didn't say top 10. If someone leapfrogs us for Austin so be it. But I expect him to be there at 12 unless a trade occurs.

And if someone does that, it will knock a very good player down to us (de, ol etc. al.)

Wasn't he pretty good there from what I remember? Could just sign Brandon Moore for cheap.

Brandon Albert isn't a free agent

I'm not advocating an irresponsible free agent spending-spree, either (Washington, Philadelphia, etc. have proven it simply doesn't work). The truth is, there is an optimal balance between the two. If we gave up a 3rd or 4th for Albert, we'd still have a 1, 2, 2, 3, 4 or 1,2,2,3,3 in just the first 4 rounds, right?

Plus, when you consider that signing Ellerbe, Wheeler, and Keller (and Gibson, if Bess is ultimately cut or traded) were not net gains or losses, in terms of salary or draft picks the only true signing thus far is Wallace (and perhaps Gibson). From a positional standpoint, I'd consider this year a loss so far, considering we've upgraded WR, but are now sitting with holes at CB and LT. Nothing wrong with grabbing a few more guys from free agency and trade, and then some from the draft. No one way works. The Raiders, Chiefs, Bills, Panthers, and Browns' annual presence in the top 10 of the draft proves that, wouldn't you say?

...but to answer your question, the last team with a large number of FA acquisitions to win the Super Bowl (is that greatness, or is it just the championship game? In that case, there are many) would be the Saints: Drew Brees, Pierre Thomas (udFA), Lance Moore (udFA), Jeremy Shockey, Jonathan Goodwin, Remi Ayodele, Anthony Hargrove, Bobby McCray, Scott Fujita, Scott Shanle (trade acquisition (I'm including these, because that's what MY post was about)), Janathan Vilma (trade acquisition), Jabari Greer, Darren Sharper, Randall Gay, Garrett Hartley, (udFA), and Thomas Morestead were all important components of the Super Bowl team... Jo-Lonn Dunbar (udFA) and Heath Evans would also qualify as good/important players, but they were inactive for the Super Bowl, so I'll leave them out.

Now, Denver is on their way.

Look at any great team, and I guarantee you that you'll find key free agents or trade acquisitions.

I agree, I believe he will still be on the draft board when the Dolphins select in the first round. I just don't think the Dolphins will use the 12th pick in the draft to select another WR, when they have already used so much of their cap room on this position.

Depending on what they do in free agency over the coming weeks, I believe they will use this pick to upgrade their offensive line, secondary, or defensive line.

I would love to see them draft Austin or Eifert at 12, I just don't see it happening.

The early 2000's Patriots sure had a lot of mid-level free agents. And the retained players only proved good enough at the time to get Pete Carroll fired.

I may be mixed up on whom you were replying to. Jaj posted right above you about Brandon Moore. I could see the logic of signing him for like 2 yrs. He's 34 but guards often play well into their mid 30s. Jerry IMO is better off at RT anyway. Signing Moore would solidify our right side and hurt the Jets at the same time. PFF rated him the 4th best guard in the league in 2012 and 12th in 2011. I don't really expect him to be signed because it seems this free agency period that Ireland is focusing on young veterans.
