    Depends on the guaranteed money.

    That's all that really counts.

Thanks for reminding me of that.

That's likely complaint #3 the Dolphins have about Karlos Dansby. They have a strong policy on keeping tight lipped about injuries. Karlos Dansby went out of his way to make sure everyone knew he was playing with a torn biceps even though he'd not appeared on injury report for it.

It's not just Misi. It's Trusnik and Spitler too. Dansby and Burnett are both over 30, we dodged a bullet last year but there's no guarantee they stay healthy moving forward. If we keep the trio Misi becomes depth and we hardly miss a beat if one of the starters is injured long term, has a nagging ankle/hammy etc. that needs a few weeks rest, or is winded and needs a blow mid game. If we cut Dansby or Burnett then we're in the same situation we were in last year. Praying none of our starters get banged up and hiding Misi in pass coverage as best we can.

The 49ers D is built around their front 7. And we can have a group that rivals theirs if we keep what we currently have. If we can add a legit pass rusher at DE we might have the best unit in the league. Misi, Vernon, and Odrick coming off the bench? I'm frothing at the mouth right now.

.... and depends how he plays. If he becomes one of the AFC's top inside LBs and a leader of the defense then there's a chance he outperforms his $35 million contract.

Kind of hard to hide it when you have a large brace on your arm.

If he played like he did this season and in the playoffs, he'll earn every penny.

    Thank you.

I'm not sure I understand the rationale of "hey we signed a good player, now lets go cut one of our other good players to balance things out".

The Dolphins still have policies about it. Their players aren't supposed to talk about injuries. I remember Karlos went out of his way to talk about it and I also distinctly remember that when Joe Philbin got asked about it in a press conference he did NOT look amused.

exactly. What's wrong with that? ..... and hopefully he learned a thing or two about leading a defense and calling a game from Lewis, eh.

I just saw the figures for Ellerbe 5 years/35 million, i don't think that is too bad considering what dansby was getting. NFL network thinks thats a big figure. Wonder why they hate Miami so bad.

Hahaha so who all was on the "leadership commitee" or whatever they called it from hard knocks? Looks like they may all be gone? Gotta love Philbins soft spoken style be a leader on the field or get out. I am so ready to start wining :)

Hey but according to Sapp the Ravens are doing a great job after giving Flacco a huge contract and losing Kruger, Ellerbe… trading Boldin for a 6th round pick AND are on the verge of losing Reed as well….

I believe that is primarily what he played at Utah, and some of us projected a lot of pass rushing while he was in the 3-4. That never materialized, but that was thoughts I remember when he was drafted.

Which is even more important given Ellerbe's injury struggles:

This is the big question (staying healthy); missed 3 games last year. Nevertheless, I am loving this signing as 1) it will likely lead to Dansby getting cut, 2) he is younger than our two starting ILBs, and 3) pretty damn good up and coming player.

And much as Aaron Rogers learned and grew under Favre, Ellerbe learned and grew under Ray Lewis.

I wonder if part of the reason Ellerbe came here is to avoid Ray Lewis' shadow in Baltimore?

So do you think this is a good or bad deal for us?

I thought it was a pretty solid deal as I love the player. 27 years old, played 13 games last season and registered 90 something tackles, 4.5 sacks and 2 FF.

My only problem with this is..............he doesn't make plays in the passing game. Over 100 QBR against..no career INT's. Are we going to let him be a 3 down backer? Kinda have to at that price.

Edit: Sorry just saw we signed Philip Wheeler who is solid in coverage so he'll probably be the 3 down linebacker.

So Ellerbe gets a lot of money to be a 2 down LB.

Dansby and Philbin seemed uncomfortable around each other to me..

I remember being worried about whether that was Philbins fault, and that he couldn't connect with the Dansby type player..

A player that comes in out of shape every year yet is paid like a boss and doesn't really make any head turning plays?

Yeah, I don't think Philbin does relate well to those players.

That's interesting, considering a quick look at Phillip Wheeler with the Raiders has him playing an OLB position a lot like Koa Misi's position rather than Kevin Burnett's.

When signed word had it that Wheeler would move to OLB to Misi's spot and they would Misi somewhere else. Add in that Ellerbe could also be playing OLB that leaves the dolphins with two options. Sign/Draft a MLB and move Misi to DE, or move Misi to MLB

Yeah when I saw the new tweet about Ellerbe at OLB, I remembered also the earlier tweet about Wheeler taking up Misi's spot and Misi being used "in different ways".

There was a tweet that LBs coach George Edwards was at UF today looking at Jonathan Bostic and Jelani Jenkins. I almost wonder if they'd consider drafting a MLB. I'm not sure Misi has the football IQ to play the Mike spot. Physically I can see it. But, getting guys lined up, making adjustments based on Tom Brady's calls? Sorry, I don't see it.

I think part of it may be that, but also that you already won the Super Bowl so a change of scenery is appealing. Poaching Super Bowl winners has been a tried and true method over the years.
