I have more of an issue with Gibson being put in motion, or more to the point questions as to why he wasn't put in motion more, and why he didn't produce when he was.

As for his work in the slot, over his 4 year career he's run 175 routes from the slot, been thrown the football there 26 times with 17 catches for 198 yards and 3 TDs. That's 7.6 yards per attempt, 1.13 yards per route. From the perimeter he has run 1383 routes, been thrown the football 264 times with 157 catches for 1897 yards and 6 touchdowns. That's 7.2 yards per attempt, 1.37 yards per route.

    All are poor numbers.

I found it interesting that Gibson's yards per attempt on the perimeter spiked in 2012, from 5.5 (rookie), 6.9 (2nd year) and 6.6 (3rd year) to 9.2 this year. But that's where the coaches tape comes in. You've got to see whether that's a result of Bradford throwing him the football at the right times, or if he's just getting open that much more often. I found it to be more the former than the latter. He still wasn't getting open very often. Bradford was just finding him more efficiently when he was.

If they are going after a Rams wr why not give Donnie Avery or heck even Mark Clayton a look, they bring more to the table then Gibson.

What I'm doing is looking at the player relative to the speculative value of the contract he wants, and trying to find the right range for what I would place on his talent.

I'm also trying to understand the strategy of the front office, if they are interested then it tells me there is no interest in Wallace or Jennings, that were going after the draft for offensive young firepower for which tannehill can grow with..

Oh, well, I'll accord that statement with 1.5 mil a year. Fair enough about the minimum, I guess Im just used to every NFL player who is getting a contract getting 1 mil, 1.5 mil per year minimum.

The question is do you essentially want a poor man's version of Brian Hartline on a team that already has Brian Hartline and Davone Bess?

I don't know what Gibson will get on the market. I'm not sure if anyone has a bead on that right now. It's probably assumed to be in the $3-5 million range.

But do you want a guy who has all of the same weaknesses as Brian Hartline, except quite possibly even weaker, while having strengths that are not as strong as Hartline. Hartline is faster, has better hands, better consistency, gets open more often, is better dealing with physical coverage, finishes plays better, works the sidelines better, etc. What exactly does Gibson offer the Dolphins?

Maybe the Gibson interest is being put out there to get more leverage on Jennings? Maybe Wallace is the High and Gibson is the low.
    Ex.
Wallace wants $11 million a year
Gibson wants $6 million a year
Maybe saying they have interest in both of them can help negotiate Jennings into something more in the middle if he's more on the high side.

I don't believe we have any interest in Jennings at all, gut feeling. Seems very similar to the Matt Flynn situation.

I think we better wait to see what kind of contract Gibson gets, if any, before worrying too much about Miami overpaying for a poor man's Brian Hartline.

Ok so which one of those guys was selected in the 1st round?

    Cobb 5'10 192, Rodgers 5'6 196, Wilson 5'11 206, Sproles 5'6 190, Leonard, 5'8 188… everyone of those guys out weigh Austin by 14 to 32 pounds… a huge difference by NFL standards.

McCluster and Banks are small guys that have never done anything in the NFL.

Small guys are not drafted int he first round for a reason.

so Moss grew 3 inches since he joined the NFL? Also, Moss started 29 of 64 games in this first 4 seasons with the Jets. Not what I want from a 12 over all pick. 12 over all pick needs to play now. Moss has also missed time in 7 of 12 seasons

  17. MrClean

No. He is still the same height. He came into the league at 5095 (5'9 5/8s") His height is rounded up to 5'10 by sites like nfl.com. He came into the league at 181 and is now listed at 185.

Austin is 5084 (5'8 1/2") and 174. So I was off a little on the height, Moss is an inch and an eighth taller. Austin is as likely to add 4 lbs like Moss did. So essentially he'll still be 7 lbs difference, which is nothing.

8 of 12 seasons he's played 15 or more games. 2 other seasons he played in 14. One year he played in 12. The only year he missed appreciable time was his first season. There we don't know if he was just declared inactive, or if he was hurt.
I'd say that is pretty durable.

If Brandon Gibson is Jeff Ireland's idea of improving the WR corps just fire the dude now because he wont make it through the season before the fanbase kills him. I mean St Louis is just as WR needy as Miami and they didnt want him. He had every opportunity to gain a starting spot there and failed repeatedly to hold it or stay healthy enough to hold it. Seriously this cant be real...but if it is at least it will be the last season of El Jefe.

I swear every time I start to gain an ounce of faith in this guy he just messes it up.
Lets resign Hartline for 6/31. Ok good idea, not my first choice but I can live with it.
Lets also give Brandon Gibson a contract with some guaranteed money. WTF????????

Hopefully this isnt real and is just Gibson's agent blowing smoke and trying to generate interest.

...and how many of them SHOULD have been drafted in the first round?

If GM's with this mindset would get off Kiper's lap and look at the draft from where the smart people are sitting, their teams would be better.

If, in hindsight, you don't think Russell Wilson should've been a first round selection, Lord help you.

Brandon Banks is a top-5 return guy in the league, and they only give him limited snaps at WR. Only a 7th or UDFA IIRC. Exceeding expectations.

McCluster is a great asset for KC, because they've had such little skill on the team outside of Bowe went Charles went down 2 years ago; he essentially played WR/KR/PR/RB for them en route to racking up ~1500 all purpose yards. That's with Cassel at QB and crap play-calling.

I'll take ANY of the players I listed on our team.

You're right. Tavon Austin is lighter than anyone on our roster, but you can see that he's muscular. He's in shape. He'll be able to take hits. I'd trust him to take a hit over a big guy like USC Mike Williams.

Steve Smith (who has played three full seasons out of 11) also has 11 pounds on Austin.

I am not saying that Austin is not going to be a good player, he has the talent to be good BUT you just can not take a guy at that size in the 1st round. the would be dumb.

The only guy on that list that I take in the 1st round is Wilson. As for Banks, are you suggesting the Fins spend a first round pick on a returner? If McCluster is so good why didnt he duplicate his feat?
The fact that Austin is fit and muscular should really scare you more then encourage you. All that means to me is that he is as big physically as he is ever going to be.

Dont get me wrong, I wouldnt mind taking Austin at some point in the draft… just not in the first couple rounds.

What's your precedent for arriving at that conclusion?

    A team that's previously selected a similarly-sized wide receiver from 8-16? Success:Bust ratio of similarly-sized players?

I'll tell you what would be stupid: Drafting a WR that was converted into a QB, who has 1 year of college QB'ing under his belt, 8th overall to be your franchise QB :shifty:

Crazier things have happened before...and worked out for teams.

Are you trying to knock Steve Smith to help support an argument against Austin? Cmon.
And the difference between 184 & 174 is like splitting hairs.

not knocking Smith, the guy was a fabulous player… but that doesnt take away from the fact he missed games in 8 of the 11 seasons he has been in the NFL. And I am not saying the Austin is not going to be a good player while he is healthy. I just dont think he is going to be healthy enough for long enough to warrant a 1st round pick. And 10 pounds is huge when you are talking about 175 pound player (that is almost 6% of his body weight)… not like we are talking about 325 pound guys here.

  29. Hurricane

    Hurricane Guest

Didn't say Banks should be taken in the first, but thanks for clarifying. I'm saying he's a small guy that succeeded. Your words were that [A guy that size] would not be in the NFL for longer than 3-4 years, that guys like that cannot last in the NFL, and that he's never done anything. All wrong.

McCluster didn't repeat the feat because they brought in Breaston and got Charles and Moeaki back. Thus, less playing time.

I disagree on that last part. If you're in shape, you're in shape. Again, you're reducing this down to size, and nothing can prove that size and ability are correlated. Everyone said that with the QB's and look what Russell did. You certainly aren't going to win any arguments with that premise regarding a traditionally smaller position. Austin wouldn't be the shortest. By far. Or the lightest.

If you don't take Austin in round 1, you're not getting him.

I'm ok taking Luke Joeckel in the 3rd, Shariff Floyd in the 5th, and if Dion Jordan is an UDFA, we bring him in.

Actually I was on board with THill long before the draft… And I could be wrong… I would just rather not gamble a 1st round pick on a guy with clear physical limitations.

I'm not really worried about the use of motion in Schottenheimer's system because he's never shown he has an idea of how to use motion.

well, of course there are guys that size that have lasted more then 3-4 years… it happens but my point is that is not the norm rather the exception.

As for McCluster, if you are good teams will find you ways to get you the ball.

I wouldnt take Austin in the 1st round… someone else can have him...

  33. Hurricane

    Hurricane Guest

    ???

....anyway, he's been in the league 12 years, and is still a top 10 WR.

He's also averaging 14 games a season. 15 if you take out the year he played 1 game (tell me how his leg doesn't break from a guy falling on it if he's 10 pounds heavier).

Keeping the 14 gp, though, it's on pace with guys like Andre Johnson, Dez Bryant, and Vincent Jackson.

That cannot be. He is only 5'9 and 184. That doesn't meet the HOF size limits. :wink2:

I take back my comparison for Tavon as being a mix of Jackson and Moss. He is a mix between Steve L. Smith and Santana Moss.

It would be dumb not to take him simply because of some imaginary size standard. At what point does a player become tall enough and heavy enough for the 1st? If he were 5'10 and 180 could he be a 1st? Or must he be 190? Perhaps 5'10 is still too short for the 1st? No players under 5'11 or maybe even 6' even can be taken in the 1st. Where do we draw the line?

Steve Smith has 4 seasons of 16 games played. 4 seasons of 15 games played. 3 of 14 games. Only 1 season did he miss any appreciable time.

Andre Johnson has been 10 yrs in the league. One year he played only 7 games and one year only 9. Two years he played 13 each. He played 16 in 6 seasons.

Smith has averaged 13.9 games a season. The prototype NFL WR, Andre Johnson has averaged 13.8. So how much good did all of Andre's extra size do him staying healthy?
