before heading into the draft, is that considered a failure considering the resources that we have? The assumption is that we'd then be relying on the draft to upgrade the position. I'm setting this up as a poll because I'm trying to get the pulse of the fans here. It'll be public :shifty: and feel free to add comments below.

Yes. We should all jump off a cliff to boycott the games if they fail to bring in a big name receiver.

I don't care about Big Name guys. If they can find a small name as good as Greg Jennings I'll be happy.

Depends if you are referring to "receiving targets" or just strictly WRs. If we go out and sign a TE like Cook, I'd be ok with addressing WR with a couple high picks in the draft.

I think there'll be a lot of disappointment when we don't get one, but they're not going to get one of the big names. They'll pick up a guy or two in the draft and that'll be it till next year.

To me, I've always felt it was more the # of legitimate targets as opposed to just getting an Alpha target. A guy like Brandon Gibson, who we've apparently been in contact with, would be a welcomed signing and a solid option as long as it doesn't end there and the team still puts a premium on drafting another WR or a TE. There may also be more and better value at other positions.

Ok, well then yes... not adding any big time receiving targets, including TEs, in FA would be considered a failure IMO.

For me they can make up for not going big on reciever in free agency by taking care of other needs that will make it easier to take a Patterson at 12.

If we don't, then we go offensive skillset players in the first two rounds, no problem.

Automatically comes down to two players for me in the first..Eifert or Austin, both great players that I believe their skillsets will translate...2nd round there's plenty of wide receiver talent to get excited about..

Give me a scenario like Eifert..Woods and Swope, spend that 12 mill elsewhere, and I'll be just as excited.

Disappointing, yes, but not a failure. There's only so many "big name" WR's out there.

I don't know about "big name", but if they fail to bring in a quality receiver via FA or trade I would call it a major failure. IMO that would force the Dolphins to draft a WR at 12, and that's not something they should be forced to do.

If we sign Cook for that $8 mil or whatever alleged ridiculous number then that'd be a way bigger failure than not signing Wallace or Jennings for me.

Yes, big time. I mean this was/is Ireland "plan". I'm sure failing to find any playmakers in 5 years wasn't part of that, but he set this thing up to be able to reel in Wallace or Jennings, and if you can't get find your own weapons might as well steal them away from other teams.

I'm actually way more interested in who we go after at TE than WR in general. Unless we make an unexpected play for someone like DX on top of it.

Not necessarily a failure at upgrading the wr position because there are good choices in the draft. It would be terrible though because of all they hype saying that we are top contenders for players like Wallace, and to come up short adds on to the laughing stock this franchise is slowly becoming.

Depends on what you consider "big name". I'm not for giving Wallace or Jennings the huge contracts they are rumored to be demanding. There are some pretty good other options available via FA WR's or draft. As long as we make an obvious upgrade the best we can at WR without taking up too much cap space for one player I'll be happy. I would love to have Wallace but not for Megatron $$

I view the FA WRs and draftees as one group. Keenan Allen and Tavon Austin rep the best value, Mike Wallace is expensive as hell but a proven commodity. If it takes more than I'm willing to pay to sign Wallace I pass but I don't consider it a failure. I then do my best to land Allen and Austin. If I can grab Wallace at a decent price I take him, go best BPA with my first two few picks and look for WRs and or TEs after that.

    Well away from here
I just would like to throw the idea out there that even if we don't get a WR in the first 2 rounds, that there is nothing wrong with that. The likelihood that any rookie is going to come in and master this offense to the point where we can rely on them handily is slim. Receiver takes time to learn at the next level unless you are an elite prospect.

There are no elite WR prospects in this years draft. As such, holding firm to the idea that a rookie will make or break the WR corp is setting oneself up to be disappointed. Rishard Matthews flashed in preseason and then managed to make some plays at the end of the year, but the reality is that he still struggled to get in the right spots. Matthews I think will step up this year. Will he be a savior? No, but I do expect 25-35 catches from him this year, which is a good leap from what he had last year.

We will have to continue to lean on Hartline, Bess and Matthews until we get someone else to help. Armon Binns is a nice addition as well, and he should be kept around IMO. From that, you really only need maybe 2 more guys. After that, there just isn't enough snaps to go around really. I'm not saying don't continue to add to the unit, but expecting the contribution to come at #12 as if there is no other way possible to get a capable receiver in the fold is just not sound.

The 12th pick, holds a lot of value and if you're using it at a position that historically won't produce a great deal within the offense the first year - thats just not a good way to use that resource IMO. Get me a guy who will see a lot of snaps.

Use the 2nd round and after as a way to get a guy or two to bring in. Less pressure to get him/them on the field to play.

It's hard to say. I mean, I can really see the WR position being a mirror image of the QB situation last year. We got our hopes up for Peyton Manning. Not getting him was tough, even though Miami never really had an honest chance. Matt Flynn was considered the consilation prize. But I'll give Ireland credit, aside from Peyton Manning and the hindsight of what we now know about guys like Russell Wilson and maybe even RGIII, Ryan Tannehill was probably the best decision to be made at the position.

Now here we are with our hopes high for guys like Greg Jennings, Mike Wallace. And we've got all these lower tier guys who we would consider to be the Matt Flynn's in this analogy. If Miami does nothing, it will seem like a failure in both our minds and the media. But maybe using a first round pick on a guy like Tavon Austin is the best plan. It's hard to say. Ireland hasn't been the best when it comes to drafting skill position players, so anything outside of a first round WR prospect would be a failure IMHO, if he doesn't fill the need in free agencey or the draft.

I know my stance on Ireland is well known on this board. But in regards to the WR position, I'm going to be patient and wait until the draft is over before I decide whether or not to bunch up my panties.

Outside of the WR position, free agency will be a failure if Ireland doesn't do a better job in bringing in guys that can fill some holes. They don't have to be superstars, just serviceable guys who can upgrade key positions or add valuable depth. Ireland failed miserably at that last year, and not even his most staunch defenders can really argue against that fact.

Edited to add: I'll say "no" but I really mean not necessarily.

We really need play makers in the WR, TE and RB spots...if Miller explodes (as they suspect) or we get a TE that can bust the seams or a WR who is better than what we have, then we just may still be more successful....the bottom line is that we can't judge the offseason until we play some games and we see how this team plays, it's all conjecture....heck, we may even get Jennings and still not be very successful....we simply have to wait and see...

Looks like we're on the same page with Wallace and his salary, Keenan Allen getting respect, Austin being a fu&$ing stud, however, Eifert for me is in the top 3, and has been from the get, just from a weaponry, matchup perspective, he has to be in the discussion..

Idk I guess they have no faith in his knees but his upside is crazy and not having to give up a pick for him is huge. To my knowledge any team can make an offer to him and SD has the right to match it.

No Bowe really makes him that much more an attractive option to teams now too.

IMO we need offensive skill players. I would prefer to bring in both a FA WR and a FA TE as well as addressing WR in the draft. I really like a couple WRs in the second round (Bailey and Hopkins) and one in the third (Swope). I'm not as excited about the TE talent in the draft. The reason I would want to add a FA WR and FA TE is b/c I think that will give RT better targets while the rookies acclimate for a year. I do think Matthews has enough ability to be a #1 WR I wouldn't put all my eggs in that basket, but I also don't want to pretend he's not there. My preferred scenario would be to add Jennings and a TE like Keller while drafting Bailey and Swope, but that's mot the only scenario that could be a success. If, for example, we added a Keller, a lower level vet WR and still drafted a couple, that would also be a success. Even if we just added Austin and a WR like Danario Alexander, I can't say that wouldn't also be a success. My point is that it would be ridiculous to try and label the off-season as a success or failure after just FA. The only reason to do that would be if your primary goal is to complain about Ireland.

Not a failure. You don't need an alpha male WR to have a great offense. It helps, but not needed.

But we had a Zeta level WR corps last year. We need to improve that.

I think it is a failure if the Phins don't land either Wallace or Jennings, or fail to trade for an accomplished veteran WR... IF... those guys are acquired for reasonable prices elsewhere. Now, if other teams decide to overpay (which is often the case) then, there's nothing to complain about.
