Just another sign that this FA class is going to look a lot different in a week, when it starts....

I'd rather pay him the $7m that Smith will demand, even if it's getting a guy on the down slope of his career...

UPDATE 10:48 a.m. ET: And, of course, there are now multiple reports that Asomugha won’t be released today.

UPDATE 11:17 a.m. ET: And Eskin has now joined the ranks of those reporting that it won’t happen today.

His play slipped DRASTICALLY the last few years. Id take a small gamble on him but his market will be thinner then expected imo if it does happen.

I still think he can be an elite corner, but I would rather resign Smith who will be 26 rather than Nnamdi who will be 32.

Specifically his play slipped a ton in 2012. You can't blame it all on scheme, either. What worries me is you have a 32 year old guy who just doesn't seem passionate anymore, whose play slipped significantly in the most recent year...and these are not good signs that a revival is on the way.

I think this is the kind of guy that Kevin Coyle has an extensive work history with in Cincinnati. I think it would probably be a good potential option.

Let me put it this way. Jimmy Wilson outplayed him last year. Let that sink in.

66.7% completions on him for 698 yards (15.9 avg catch) 5 TD's allowed and 120.8QBR against. Would have been a whole lot worse but it seems he was still living off rep and teams targeted him half the times compared to those in the same snap count range. For instance Tim Jennings allowed less yards on 104 times targeted. Nmandi....44. It was a bit better the year before...but not massively. In other words he's showing 2 straight year of declines. Too many better options out there.

In Oakland he was always or nearly always in press man. That's his strength. Philly apparently tried to fit a square peg in a round hole and make him play zone. Which while he can do it, is only fair to middling at it.
I could see the idea of signing him for like 2 years, if you are willing to have him play press man the vast majority of the time.

Be a hell of a risk and you get to pay him nicely for that risk. If were going to try a reclamation project Bengals style...can't we try it on someone younger that can pay off longer term?

He looked lost on the field this year. Receivers literally went by him while he stood flat footed.

If we start signing some aged veterans that we hope will play good for us, but who are in serious decline in their careers could backfire on us and move us backward instead of forward. Isn't that pretty much what we tried with Columbo and it didn't work? He had been a good lineman at one time but his last couple of years in Dallas had been on a decline and we hoped it was because of the scheme or injuries and we hoped he would return to form. It was the same results with some other aged veterans as well.

IIRC both Bess and Hartline have 'gotten of' on him. That's enough to have me say no.

Not if the reports I've heard about Miami wanting to play more zone coverage are true. I was listening to Alex Marvez last night, and he was talking about Miami not wanting to keep Smith because he doesn't play well in zone coverage, and the team was wanting to move towards more zone coverage schemes.

Nnamdi is a press guy like Smith that struggles when he has to cover in space.

The guy isn't THAT good. He wasn't that good with the Raiders. He made a couple of plays and everyone...I mean everyone...stopped throwing his way. Easy to say your are the best when nobody throws it your way all season. Attack him and you see what happened his last year in Oakland and while he has been in Philly. He is very beatable in man coverage and doesn't cover well in the zone.

Is he serviceable? Yes. Is he who you want out there as a starter on the #1 guy at this stage of his career? No.

Paying big money for FA CBs never works out well. People seem to think that if you struggle in coverage you need to sign big name FA CBs to fix it. I can't recall the last time that it worked. In fact, most of the time the team that sign the big name FA CB has a worse pass D the following year. It's just the nature of the position under the current rules. An average CB has about as much impact as all but the very best. And even the very best will change from year to year for all but that HOF talent.

I think his own physicality has caught up with him.
One of his strengths was that he was big..and well..strong. I think this has actually caught up with him.

Unless he is dirt cheap, I think there are much much better options out there, especially considering we aren't just one defensive back away......

If that is true about moving to more zone, that's good I would say. I think it's easier to find decent zone corners than it man to man corners.

I hope we don't sign a player based off of how he used to play. Nnamdi was flat out awful this past season. No thanks - this team doesn't need to take an expensive risk on a player who sucked last season.

I'd kick the tires and look at making him a FS ala Woodson in GB

I've been reading we are going to more zone defense. Nnamdi's forte is press man. He wouldn't fit well.

This Nnamdi myth that he was in the wrong system, dont know where it came from. He played man to man all last season and was absolutely awful. Not even worth a cheap signing.

Sounds familiar. We already have one of those. He wants $7 million, too. Do we really need them at both corners? Or do we need to replace Smith with someone older who has the same problem? Pass.
