we have no idea of what his market would be. likely it would be determined by how many WR FA's actually hit the market and how desperate teams are.
even if CK is right and that Hartline should have commanded 4 to 4.5 million a year, the extra 2 million is inconsequential compared to:
1)how the contract is structure wrt guaranteed money
    2) the importance of hitting on this draft
    3) who we sign to be WR next to Hartline.

It's not contradictory. They will either deem Marshall healthy and able enough to play the #2 position or release him rather than have him make the salary he's making to be the number 4.

Exactly. No way is he a number 4 at that salary.

If they think he is healthy and able enough to play, he will most likely be the number 2. If not, I don't think he's on this team. It will be hard to justify keeping him as a 4th corner.

Which means his agent is trying to lay the foundation for free agent interest if/when he's released by the Dolphins?

My eyes see Hartline getting open deep regularly. Often by several yards. If yours don't see that you aren't watching.

Which means they never replaced Vontae Davis.

    Meaning?

We still don't have a nickel corner? Carroll, Wilson and Patterson all played there last year. But seeing as how Richard Marshall was the 2 even before the trade I'm struggling to see your point, besides taking a swipe at Marshall.

I see him getting behind DBs who squat on him or bite on double moves, occasionally. I also see that he struggles to catch balls that aren't thrown perfectly. And I'm not a fan of patting guys on the back for getting deep, making the catch is more important. IMO.

Usain Bolt would make a good WR by your standards......it doesnt mean nothing if he cant/wont catch the ball, or the difficult catch, or score/break away after the catch.

Patterson is a decent nickel corner. I focused on him in game 15, and liked his movement skills and awareness.
Probably going to sign someone like Derek Cox, draft a corner in the 2nd or 3rd, and roll with them plus Marshall and Patterson. If the rookie shows enough to bump one of the latter two down to the 4th corner, then they likely get released and Carroll or McCann is kept as the 4th corner. We could very possible keep 5 and it be both of them too.

Why is it either or? Why can't you use observational and empirical data to help create an evaluation?

I could have replaced Vonte, but not quite adequately...

That is the issue, of course.

While Ireland may not have signed Marshall with the intent of him replacing Vontae, at the time the trade was made he was comfortable with Marshall being capable of doing so. If Marshall's back is sound, I don't expect him to be cut. IMO, Jeff is just feeling like he has a #2 corner at a very good price, as #2 corners go. I am not saying I personally agree with it. My opinion of Marshall as a starting corner isn't much higher than yours. I'm just trying to look into the head of Ireland.

How do you know what Jeff Ireland feels about that? Especially since he sat there on Hard Knocks and openly debated the merits of the Vontae Davis trade because if he trades him he has to "go out and find another one".

I cannot recall a WR who gets open deep more, only to be overthrown, or when he is able to make the catch not able to do so in stride and gain any YAC. Hopefully the timing will improve this season between RT and BH on those deep passes. Hey Ryan, that ain't Bullet Bob Hayes you're throwing to. Don't lead him quite so much. :)

You assumed Marshall is viewed as a #4 corner by Ireland. I said clearly, I do not think he does. I think he views him as a # 2 and Patterson as the #3. So, you do NOT add 2 cornerbacks to the needs list, just 1.

Now heres the part that's confusing you. I said that IF they do view him as a #4 corner like you suggest, they will cut him. Not keep him. That will add a CB to the needs list, but it will also free up cap space.

Next time, rather than LOL, read. It will help you out.

The part that's evidently confusing you is the fact that I never once said they view Richard Marshall as a #4 corner.

Next time, rather than insult, READ. It will help you out.

How does Richard Marshall/Sean Smith/Vontae Davis have to do with the thread topic? Keep it on topic.

Someone mentions one of them, someone else replies, then another and another. Same as when most threads veer from the original topic which is not really uncommon. At least it is civil discussion of Miami Dolphins football.
Are the posting rules tightening up to where only the players mentioned in the OP can be mentioned anywhere in the thread?

If I remember correctly he got a pass interference penalty that essentially gave the Texans a touchdown in the very first game of the year.

Just checked. In that first game he was thrown on 7 times and allowed 4 completions for 40 yards plus a 26 yard pass interference penalty in the end zone which gave the Texans the ball 1st & Goal on the 1 yard line for the easy score.

So yeah he played poorly before and after this injury of his.

I'm not sure about that but I do think this particular argument de-evolved into a set of outright insults that were unnecessary and I think the mods did a great job of resolving that.

Anyway. Jeff Darlington article states the Brian Hartline number is actually $7 million a year. Let the b-tching start anew.

In our exchanges of posts about Marshall, Davis etc, I don't think either of us were insulting. I spent a lot of time writing those posts. To just see them vaporized because they were not about the OP pisses me off to no end.

It says just under $7 million a year. Could be $6, could be $6.5, could even be less.

Let's wait until hard evidence until the *****ing is started anew.

Sean Smith let a 4th and 12 go in for a touchdown. I know that has nothing to do with what you have to say. Just want to bring it up because it still stings.

The Cardinals play, I remember. A big part of that though was the Dolphins total lack of pass rush and unwillingness to send extra blitzers in. They let Kolb have extra time, sent multiple threats into Sean Smith's zone, caught him cheating toward one where he needed to "guess" the other.

If the Dolphins gave me $3.5 million a year, I'll go around the stadium and kick every fan in the balls. That way they can get the same production as Hartline for half the money, and it wouldn't count against the cap.

I don't care if they pay Hartline 20 mil a year. I am so damned mad right now about my posts about Marshall and Davis getting deleted. No attack toward other posters. Written in a civil manner. Just not about the original thread topic. Many threads stray from the original topic every day and the posts do not get deleted. As long as it is discussing Dolphins players in a polite and intelligent manner they should not be deleted. I believe I deserve a public apology for my posts being removed. It took me a lot of time, thought and effort to write them, then to just see them vanish into thin air. Yet some of the Marshall, Davis posts remain. Totally senseless. What a way to treat an original member, a paying member, of the forum.

Paying Hartline 6.5 mil/yr is so stupid I can't even comprehend it. I'd rather give that to Jared Cook.
