Please just check this out and lets talk..if you don't think the kids talent is special than you don't have to post, but if you do, like me, maybe we should revisit this kids character and chance with us...

Just imagine what he can do if it all turns on for him, imagine the electricity he could bring to a stadium, imagine the playmaking ability that we desperately need.

I'll tell ya this, some may not like him and villify him because he made some mistakes, but I'm rooting for him incredibly hard..and I would like to give him a chance to play with us just in case the project comes together, cause if it does, it will be special.

He's a potentially good playmaker, but not a good corner. Because of that, I couldn't use a high pick on him (top 3 rounds). That's not even factoring in his baggage.

Oh and I love his explanation about how the first thing he'd do is hire a handler to keep him out of bad situations.

Yeah. That or you can be an adult and keep yourself out of bad situations. He's essentially admitting that he doesn't have the strength of character to persevere through adversity. He needs someone to do it for him. That kind of stuff is kind of important when it comes to the NFL, and not just because you need to stay out of jail.

Don't the Cowboys have a handler for Dez? A nicer word could be valet. :shifty:

IMO there's too much talent available to make me want to waste a pick on such an unreliable person.

If I am going to use a pick on a late round talent with upside, i'd rather burn it on a high character guy like Garrett Gilkey, instead of a guy that has proven more than once he doesn't get "it"

The kid has all the tools to be a fine nickel corner, who are staying on the field as much as anyone these days, and their is no price tag on the amount of value a true playmaker can have..with his natural athleticism, you can teach him technique, that's what some are missing, when I hear he's not a good corner, well, there are lots of corners in the game, but very few true playmakers with elite instincts, maybe that should account for something, maybe excellent ball skills should account for something...

Watch his feet in that video...perfect.

the human element of this evaluation game makes me question if its in your repertoire, especially when I hear you defend a character like Marquess Wilson.

I've watched every game he has played in at LSU that was televised, I don't need to watch the video.

And yes, he has the tools to be a fine nickel corner, but he also had the tools and ability to stay on the LSU team (a team that bends over backwards for its players mind you) yet failed to do so. He wasn't even that good of a nickel corner in college when looking at strictly coverage. How often does a corner who can't cover all that well deserve to be a high pick? How about one who was kicked off his team because he couldn't keep his **** together?

Then when do you take a risk on a player with this kind of talent if not after what you just saw, after a rehab assignment, after knowing the kid was adopted..after knowing his teammates love him..how much are you gonna punish the kid where it's not worth a third rounder?

People are sleeping on this kids talent imo..and the story around it.

He may or may not be a good boundary corner. But as a slot corner, IMO he'd be very good. Just need to be sure he stays on the right path.

    Analysis from nfl.com
    Strengths
Fiesty turnover machine who lines up outside, in the slot and at safety when needed. Instinctual player with very good read-and-react ability, always seems to work his way into position to make a play on the ball. Does whatever it takes to make a stop, fights through blocks using hands and quickness, goes low or high and doesn’t let up after initial contact. Brings enough force despite his size to get ballcarriers off balance with a glancing blow. Constantly rips at the ball while making a tackle or when others have secured the stop. Fights for jump balls with taller receivers downfield. Regularly used as a blitzer due to his feel, quickness and tenacity. Very good vision and short-area quickness as a punt returner, can make the first man miss and cut back effectively against the grain. Will go outside if the space is there but also slalom through traffic up the field when necessary. Also has balance and strength to get through arm tackles. Will also be a strong tackler on coverage units if required.
    Weaknesses
Mathieu’s issues with substance abuse will be the primary focus of NFL teams whenever he decides to pursue a career in professional football. Possesses below-average size for the position. Usually brings down ballcarriers of any size, NFL veterans might prove a bigger challenge. Quicker than fast, though his effort often masks average straight-line speed for his size. Must prove his ability to stay with larger receivers and tight end in man coverage, as they use their length advantage to separate and frame to shield him from the ball. Will take chances as a punt returner, grabbing the ball on a bounce or inside the 5-yard line.

    Bottom Line
The 2011 Bednarik Award winner as the nation’s top defender was dismissed from LSU for multiple violations of team rules. Subsequently, he decided to enter a drug rehab center and ultimately ended up declaring for the draft instead of transferring. When on the field, the undersized but ultracompetitive turnover machine (six forced fumbles, two interceptions in 2011) brings the physicality of a bigger player in his tackles, no matter where he plays. Mathieu is also a game-changer as a punt returner, ranking fourth in the country last year with 16.2 yards per attempt and scoring two touchdowns.

    Analysis

Positives: Plays bigger than his size. Doesn't back from the physical challenge of lining up opposite taller wideouts and is actually more effective the closer he is to the line of scrimmage, demonstrating stellar instincts and awareness to avoid blocks and make plays in close quarters. Possesses excellent lateral agility and acceleration which gives him the ability to close quickly on the ball. Is a tenacious defender with strong, active hands to rip the ball away. Excellent ball skills. Minimizes his natural height disadvantage by timing his leap well in jump-ball situations and competing throughout the catch process, ripping away at the ball as he and the intended receiver are descending. Naturally plucks the ball out of the air and secures it quickly. Tracks the ball well over his shoulder. Quick feet, fluid hips and a legitimate second gear make him very effective in coverage, especially on shorter routes. Dynamic returner with a flair for the dramatic. Has demonstrated the ability to play well on the big stage against elite competition.

Negatives: Lacks ideal height for the position and is quicker than he is fast, making him susceptible on longer throws. Highly aggressive and will bite on underneath routes. Possesses the suddenness to make up for a miss-step but does not have the elite straight-line speed to recover against a well-executed double-move and accurate pass. Trusts his instincts too much and can put his teammates in difficult positions by drifting to where he anticipates the quarterback will be going with the football. As such, cerebral NFL quarterbacks will be able to manipulate him with their eyes and potentially beat him over the top with accurate deep passes. Has a well-documented history of poor decisions off the field that could result in even more struggles given the money and notoriety he'll receive as an NFL player.

Compares To: Antoine Winfield, CB, Minnesota Vikings -- Like the 5-09, 180 pound Winfield, Mathieu has Pro Bowl potential due to his tenacity, instincts and physicality.

I read the article that's linked in the OP back when it was posted two months ago, and I read damn near every article that came out locally and nationally for like two weeks following him being kicked off the team.

I don't need to watch a ****ing video to post.

He's squashed his questionable speed concerns imo..plenty of it, non factor..besides, when he reacts, two things happens, he reacts quicker than anyone else in this draft, and his first step is explosive, all resulting in a quicker arrival to make the play, then he has the best ball skills to close deal to boot..no big deal though..he's not a good corner..

Listening to him at the combine, I get the same feeling as you and Deion Sanders. Then again, I'm not the best person around for spotting bullsh*t. There is an old saying, you can't bullsh*t a bullsh*tter. I guess I'm not the latter because I've been bullsh*tted a few times in my life. Getting better though. Also, I have no vested interest in whether or not he is being honest and sincere other than being a football fan. I want to believe him because that is what's best for him in his life. I hope he can do what he says he'll do. He seems sincere to me, just listening to him at the combine and in that video.

If Lawrence 'I drug a ***** down the stairs by her hair and beat her head into mailboxes' can get a shot in the NFL as a #6 overall pick, why can't the honey badger? I wouldn't draft as high as LP, but I would have him on my board as a mid rounder

At his size, to be great, you're thinking he's got to be another Antoine Winfield or another Brent Grimes. I don't think he has that in him, from what I've seen. I think he's more Javier Arenas.

I don't think he could be as good as Antoine Winfield or Ray Buchanon who were also two smaller corners.
