It is funny that every article talking about the "do you like girls?" question inevitably brings up Ireland.

"Is your mother a whore?" is his signature moment in the NFL. I'm sure he's thrilled.

Regardless, you would hope that Ireland of all people would be so careful how he questions prospects that I find it hard to believe he would be so dumb to do this.

But it is Ireland we're talking about....

Jeff Ireland has grown on me, not as a great GM but as this (probably) fictional caricature whos hilarious hijinks knows no bounds. All that said, he probably didn't do this.

Check out Lane Johnson's comments about the Bengals interview. Said it was the weirdest interview he ever had. The combine is just a weird event, I guess.

    LOL

Two comic books: "The Incredible El Jeffe", a Walter Mitty like tale of Jeff Ireland and his foibles as he navigates the world of NFL general managing; and "The Wacky Misadventures of the 'Stache", which follows Dave Wannstedt's ne'er do well football coach as he hilariously leaps from one job disaster to another

This is not even close to comparable to asking Bryant if his mother was a whore.

Even that wasn't comparable. That was overblown tripe. If I'm talking with a guy and he tells me his dad's a pimp and his mother works for him....damn straight I'd think his mother was a hoe ;p

And quite frankly this is stuff a team needs to know cause crap gets blown up in the media. And unfortunately, the gay part would need to be known to. I'd just hope they wouldn't avoid drafting a guy because he was....but to use that knowledge to ease him into the locker room as best as possible.

I think it's incredibly close and there are obvious reasons why anyone trying to figure out which team did this would immediately think of Ireland.

That doesn't mean he's the one that did it though. HOPEFULLY, he learned from his Dez Bryant mistake.

Asking someone their sexual orientation is essentially a violation of the law.

Oh, that must have been a typo. He surely meant the Dolphins. Only Ireland is capable of off the wall or inappropriate questions. :pity:

Wannstedt's latest job? Special Teams Coordinator for the Bucs. He's never been a ST Coordinator before though he did do it as part of his head coaching duties at Pitt. Why would the Bucs not hire a proven ST coach? Greg Schiano was on Wanny's Bears staff back in the 90s. So just part of the good ol' boys network known as the NFL coaching fraternity recycling one failed coach after another.
I have to give Philbin some credit in this regard. He hired several coaches who had never coached in the NFL before. Off the top of my head, the OL, WR, QB and DBs coaches. Rather than just regurgitate some of the same tired old failures, he at least gave some outsiders a chance.

That version of the story was only reported by one reporter (I believe for SI) and was obviously leaked by Ireland since it paints him in a slightly better light. And even if that story is accurate, the why ask the question if the answer is obvious? And does it matter if Bryant's mother was ana ctual whore or just the secretary for a pimp? Either way, she's involved in an illegal enterprise.

But asking about sexual orientation is worse because it's a violation of law in most places, rather than just being a jerk.

    1) They're both highly inappropriate questions

    2) They both can be "justified" by explaining that there was a more innocent and rational line of questions prior to it

    3) Both questions imply that you care about the answer to the question and would discriminate based on something that is not in the candidate's control

Do we have to make a thread to insinuate something that we have no idea if its connected, just to make a joke at a man you don't know.

    Lame.

    1. I don't agree. I would think seeing your mother hit by your father would increase the likeliness you would hit a woman.

    2. No, you cannot justify asking someone their sexual orientation in a job interview. It is illegal.

    3. That depends what the line of questioning is. If you're trying to determine if someone is a violent person, asking them about potentially traumatizing experiences helps you make a determination.

Jeff Ireland is the poster boy for "Inappropriate Combine Questions" because of something he did. Now he has to live with it.

Of course every article that talks about this is going to mention Ireland and jokes will continue to be made. This is pretty mild stuff all things considered.

    What does this even mean?

The Dez Bryant incident is just an embaressing moment that Ireland has to lvie with. We all have embaressing moments that we have to live with, except Ireland is a public figure so his gets played out in public. Such is the life he's chosen.

Not sure that applies when it comes to the combine. This is the NFL after all and they have their own set laws...

It seems the NFL is more concerned with PR than a violation of any law. It would be an interesting court case nonetheless.

what do you want a cookie, for making a hypothetical joke...this is not football news, post in the lounge or something so you can make fun...

you ever think it might be hard to build a championship team and culture unless at some point there is some sort of positive support, instead of the same habitual ignornace, even if he fails, take the hit, move on, and lets see what chapter is next, then if we get to that chapter, let go off of your hurt, give the new regime a clean slate instead of complaing about prior failures, and deal with it..

its like a relationship. jump in and face the consequences if sh$$ goes bad, unless of course your to sensitive and throw up walls to protect yourself.

It is not illegal under federal law to discriminate in employment based on sexual orientation. Not a protected class under Title VII. State and local law may make it illegal, but depending on where you are, your mileage may vary.
