To think the NFL wants to move the combine to March, Free Agency in April and the draft in May. God no.
You know what really ****s the ignore list up? The people who post intelligent discussion quoting those that don't. Don't quote them. Just don't do it.
Maybe we didn't find a cover backer or a RB, but we did draft 3 darned fine corners in that span. Vincent, Madison, and Surtain.
I thought this was informative at the 11:35 mark: Ireland Answer (11:35 mark): "I really don't know a whole lot about it. And, their not giving us a lot of information about it. So there just going to give us the results and how its being tested. It's thoroughly new, so we're going to get into it a bit more." Question: "Can you talk about your interaction with your college scouts and how much film you watch of each player?"
If true, its a check in the negative column for sure....but I don't remember any of that. Do you have a link?
Search on here. There was a thread started by Boomer in the Club and much additional discussion. I'll see if I can find something else
I would think Stephen Ross making the call on Orton would create doubt as to who is responsible for the talent on the team?????
What I heard at the time was that Ross directed Ireland to find out how much it would cost to get Orton and to provide his recommendation. Ireland provided numbers and recommended that the team hold tight and wait for the draft since Luck, Barkley, etc. were expected to come out. Ross decided to listen to Ireland based on Ross's investigation of who had made what decisions during Parcells' time here. This is what I said at the time and not revisionist at all. It also makes logical sense that Ross then kept Ireland when he cleaned house of the coaching staff. If, as some claim, Ireland had pushed for Orton and Ross had over-ruled him why would he then decide to keep Ireland on and let him look for the next QB? It makes much more sense for Ross to have followed Ireland's recommendation on Orton and that he continued to have enough faith in Ireland and his ability to find a QB so he kept Ireland on.
That's not what the articles said at the time. I searched and the link to Salguero's story no longer works (I guess the Herald website doesn't keep stuff that long) but if yous earch "Ross nixes Orton trade" or some other combo you can find the details of the story.
The first thing that pulls up is a Phinphantic article basically calling the Armando article bull****. http://phinphanatic.com/2011/10/17/did-ross-nix-dolphins-trade-for-orton/ http://blogs.palmbeachpost.com/thedailydolphin/2011/11/22/dolphins-owner-stephen-ross-gm-jeff-ireland-looking-pretty-smart-for-not-trading-for-kyle-orton/ That basically says Ross didn't want to pay for Orton and Ireland didn't want to give up a third for him. I do find it interesting that people that constantly say Ireland is responsible for any and all moves is not responsible for any and all non moves while here.
Regardless, they wanted Orton. The only reason there was a "We want Orton" chant at the practice was because it had already been reported for days that we were in negotiations with Denver. So, if Denver would have taken a 3rd and Orton something less than $9 million, we probably would have made the trade. In this chicken or egg scenario, the negotiations came before the chant. so sugegsting that Ireland is smarter than the fans is not really accurate in this particular instance. But whatever, it was almost 3 years ago and isn't really relevant to anything they're doing now.
That doesn't mean the intent was for Orton to be the future, just veteran competition. Bringing Orton in for competition is not a bad thing at all. But acting like they thought he was the QB of the future but weren't willing to spend a 3rd and $9 mill on him is clearly naive.
Well, whatever. My only point was that it's silly to keep bringing up the fans when it comes to chanting for Orton when they only did it because the team was actively negotiating a trade for him at that time.
You're not making sense. The fans wanted Orton to start. Ireland wasn't interested in bringing Orton to start and he didn't. The fans wanted X, Ireland didn't do X and X turned out to be bad. To not count that as a win for Ireland says more about you than him.
Anything Ireland does is a "win" to you so it's barely worth discussing. And of course Ireland was interested in brining Orton in to start or they wouldn't have been invovled in the trade talks at all. Just because they couldn't reach a deal or Ross vetoed it, or whatever happened, doesn't mean they weren't interested. So to suggest that the fans are idiots because they wanted something to happen that the front office was trying to make happen is stupid.
That's bull****. I've been very critical. Draft before this one was horrible. If we don't make the playoffs he should be fired. You, on the other hand, are ridiculous in your hatred. Just stop already. I challenge you to think instead of hate. Why would he think he was starting material but not want to spend a third? It makes no sense. I get you hate the guy, but he is not the most inept and incapable and stupidest GM in the league, which is exactly how you act he is.
It doesn't mean that they wanted Orton. I would say it means exactly what I said happened. You had an owner who wanted an upgrade at QB and instructed his GM to find out what FA/trade options there were and what it would cost. Ireland began negotiations and gave his recommendation. The recommendation was that they were better off not doing the deal and waiting for the draft. Ross followed the recommendation and nixed the deal.
Of course this spins it in the most pro-Ireland way possible, which is not how it was reported at the time. whether the reporting was correct or not, who knows. But the notion that Ireland explored a trade for Orton, negotiated same, and basically had a deal somehow equates to him not wanting Orton is ridiculous. And again, this whole argument is stupid as it's water way under the bridge, but the fans didn't start the Orton thing, the Dolphins did. That was really my only point in this whole discussion
Well there are many that think he did ZERO when the Fat One was here.....he's not responsible for anything until 2 years ago.
By the way most teams have no more than 15 they said on NFL Sirius radio channel, and were laughing about how the Dolphins have 55 there and still will mess up the draft. They already know what some here have known for years, and some here refuse to accept. They continue to put their heads in the sand.
Dolphins explored a trade for Orton to push Chad Henne in camp. I believe Dolphins did offer a 3rd for him, but Denver wanted a 2nd.
