Long: Whether I stay with Dolphins 'on them'

Free agent LT Jake Long says whether or not he remains with the Dolphins is "on them."

"We're going to have to see," Long said when asked if he'd remain in Miami. "The last five years I've really enjoyed being a part of the Dolphins. ... I'd be open to continue my career there, but it's essentially on them, see what they want to do and what direction they want to head in." Publicly putting the onus on the Dolphins is an indication Long isn't interested in any sort of hometown discount. That spells trouble for his Miami future, as the team is reportedly only willing to offer $6-$7 million
    annually.

I love to see Jake Long stay a Miami Dolphin but we can not afford to pay him 10-13 million per season, when he can not stay on the field. This offseason going to be a rollarcoaster ride of emotions.

No way I want Jake back at anything more the 7-8M. He'll get more then that but hes not worth it at this point. Hes a very good LT but injury risk to much and past accomplishments have already been compensated for

It's actually on you Jake. Accept the 6-7M per season and you can stay and prove you are not declining and you can actually stay healthy. Heck, pressure them for 8M per season, that sounds like a reasonable middle ground. But it is definitely on you.

Bye Jake Long. Don't care where you go, as long as it's not here eating away 10+ million annually from our team. I was on board with taking him at #1 when he came out and he gave us a few great seasons. But he's not that Left Tackle anymore. Hasn't been for 2+ seasons.

Very hard to give any non-QB $10M+ per season. Especially one with an injury history.

Agreed and the same sentiment can be repeated in the Revis thread.

Also Long's "it's on the team" statement is ridiculous.

Not even close. Regardless of what happens going forward, Miami got some all-pro years out of him. Thats always a win.

I hate to watch the team let a guy go who costed a #1 overall pick, but... I can't blame them if they do. Long doesn't seem geared to play in a zone-blocking scheme, and to top that off, he just can't stay healthy. In the end, I think he'll be more valuable to a different team.

I liked Jake a lot more when he was actually playing well. The simple fact is he isn't but a after thought of the player he was the first two years here. I wouldn't mind giving him 6-8mil a year with some incentives to make more based on games played and performance. If he is asking for more than that I would say see ya. Sucks but I've never been for paying top $$ for under performing players regardless of our needs.

The Jets just freed up a bunch of cap space. It's a logical fit.

I don't see any where in the link that says he is offered $6-7m. I haven't seen any where that Long wants $10-13m so is this conjecture?

You do NOT under ANY circumstance draft a lineman with the #1 overall pick. I don't care if he makes it to the HOF, it's still a stupid pick. I place it right there with drafting a punter/kicker #1.

Jets are still at the cap and what do they do, sign Jake to a big contract and sit Ferguson ? I do not think so and nobody is paying healthy Jake Money to put him at RT.

I would pay him 7 mil, thats more then fair. IMO I seriously doubt is willing to pay Jake more then 7 mil next year no matter how badly they need him. This is a great draft for OT and once the teams close to the cap start letting players lose the next few weeks there will be some decent, healthy OT on the market.

I agree, its not on the team, apparently they have let him know their price so now, he tests free agency. He will be a Dolphin. If other teams are offering him about the same thing, even slightly more, it would be idiotic on his part to leave Miami.

It does say " reportedly " the team is offering 6-7 million and no, I have not read anywhere but best guestimates on him asking for 10 million. No one is going to hear a word out of a team representative or Jake on the money end of things until the dust clears and the contract amount is made public.

It seems more likely that he's not coming back. This opens up Lane Johnson for the 12th pick.

If a player signing a second contract with a team is a measure of success than there aren't all that many successful draft picks.

I would offer him 8 mill a year, he should not be asking for elite money at this stage, for the production he has given us over the past two years does not measure up to the salary he's been paid during said time, he should fairly come down a bit...

we're gonna need to sign a good right tackle in free agency if he leaves..can't afford a rookie right tackle and Jon martin as your bookends..

Contextually, if they're leaving because they're not good enough to make the squad, then it is a measure of success.

Really? Worst in team history? Really? Really?

I will just throw a few names out there...

    John Bosa
    Lorenzo Hampton
    Sammie Smith
    Eric Kumerow
    Yatil Green
    John Avery
    Jamar Fletcher
    Ted Ginn Jr.

Jake Long might have regressed the past 2 years, but he was still the best in the game for his first 3...or close to it.

You may disagree with picking him #1, but Long is absolutely not the worst pick in team history. That is way too much hyperbole!

Young'un, you're getting way in over your head with this bunch by trying to sway over the top one liners. Not only is it considered not good form, but it's more than a little condescending - till you've earned your stripes. A whole lot of us have been watching Dolphin games, offseasons, and drafts since before your Mama and Daddy started school. So, why don't you back up some of your one liners with some indication that your are thinking with hour brain, and not your fingers. In the meantime, we will cut you some slack because you a newbie here. This stuff didn't fly on the last board most of us were on together, and we don't want to see it get started here - again.

None of those were offensive lineman taken #1 overall. Obviously Jake isn't the worst player they've drafted, but taking him in the spot they did was beyond stupid.

    over there
-The pick should have been Ryan
-I don't think Ireland is to blame on this one
    -We can all thank Bill

There were many here that said Jake was going to man the position for a decade.
He doesn't deserve the money he's supposedly asking so the team should let him walk.
Pretty simple, the boy needs to stay healthy for a season before he goes demanding top 3 money.
If he doesn't come back to Miami(for fair wages) we can chalk it up as greed.
