Bad decisions? The guy sabotaged his team by lining up incorrectly and running the wrong routes on purpose. He's a piece of trash. Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S3 via Tapatalk 2
And the biggest risk of all!?? Retaining a GM who has underachieved for 5 years upon the offseason that could make or break this organization for the next decade. Risk of all risks if you ask me.
That's a huge if. Huge like if you throw a Molotov cocktail in the right spot you can destroy an M1A1 Abrams. Possible but probably not worth the risk.
No brainer? He sabotaged his own team by admittedly lining up in the wrong spot. If you think you don't have to take that into consideration (which you're implying) I couldn't disagree more
Oh... right.. its that time of year... every player that gets released will get a thread here asking if we should sign him. Awesome. Titus Young... no. No. and NO! This guy is an immature idiot. Punching a teammate... intentionally lining up in the wrong position during games? His talent, isnt worth putting up with his idiocy. Id pass all day and all night on him. Completely wrong direction for this team. If we wouldnt keep Brandon Marshall and Ochcinco for their issues... why would we sign this guy?
The only really risky player that the Dolphins passed on that I fault them for is Vontaze Burfict. You don't let that much talent become an UDFA without at least kicking the tires. Young is going to a team where he's the undisputed top receiver. If he continues to cry, we're 100% sure he's an idiot.
Your exactly right, there won't be a single player cut that someone suggests would be a good pickup...nature of the offseason.
Typically it works like this. Critics wait to see which draft picks and FAs have success and then say Irish is a fool for not getting them. It's highly therapeutic for the chronically uninformed and I suggest you not interfere.
Agree on Burfict. It was a pick that had risk but a huge payback if it worked out. I also agree he will be a number one in St. Louis and Bradford is not as bad as some people say he is. Kid had nobody to throw to.
Nah. He paid for that in draft position. He should have been the hottest UDFA prospect in years though.
http://miamiherald.typepad.com/dolp...d-by-the-detroit-lions-mondaythats-not-e.html Good blog by Armando. Not about Titus Young per se, but just about needing to take risks on troubled players if they are good enough. This is my concern with Philbin.
There's troubled, and then there's Titus Young. I don't think Brandon Marshall would have been too big an issue to keep, but Titus Young would.
I think Marshall is too much trouble to keep for a brand new HC implementing an entirely new culture and offense, especially while breaking in a brand new QB who only had 19 starts in the beginning.
Again, forget about titus Young. Philbin has shown an inclination to get rid of anybody with charachter issues. What is his line?
He said Philbin will get rid of anybody with character issues. First of all, there's numerous character issues out there. Secondly, it seems Philbin has a problem with two specific character issues, lack of respect for coaches (Marshall, CJ) and poor work ethic (Davis). Let's be clear though, he didn't get rid of Davis, nor did the team actively shop Davis.
We jettisoned multiple, talented players this off season for no other reason then Philbin didn't think they "fit his culture", whatever the hell that means. Davis, in particular, was a bargain. You cannot keep doing that and expect to field a good team. Part of the job of being a coach is managing the personalities of talented, but difficult players. If you can't or won't do that then you will not be a successful head coach, nor will you keep that job very long (Cam Cameron is a great example of this, despite thet fact that you chose to blame the players for his incompetence and lack of any managerial skill)
He jettisoned 1 talented player...Marshall. Davis was a different story. They didn't actively shop him to get rid of him. They weren't looking to get rid of him. A solid offer came up, they took it because he had a poor work ethic.
Of course they did. It didn't come up out of the blue. The Colts may have "called Ireland", as was depicted on Hard Knocks, but they would have had no reason to call unless there was an inkling that the guy was available. I doubt GMs spend much time randomly calling GMs trying to asses trade value of guys they know will never be traded.
Ahh, so you're telling me something definitely happened with not a stitch of evidence, in spite of evidence we have to the contrary? Sigh.
The Dolphins may not have initiated the trade but they were willing to get rid of him because of his poor work ethic, which is a character flaw. Titus Young has numerous character flaws and I've seen more evidence than not, suggesting that Philbin would not want a player like him on the team.
No one is arguing that Philbin wouldn't want Titus Young. I was arguing against the notion that Philbin will get rid of every talented player with any character flaw, like some have said.
I agree, if you can't deal with high maintenance guys you shouldn't be a head coach. But I think Marshall is the only guy we sent packing for that reason. Davis was traded bc the trade offer was a good one and he wasn't performing. Chad was cut bc he was screwing around and he wasn't doin **** on the field. If Hed been in camp lighting it up he would probably have gotten another chance.
Vontae Davis was not a bargain. The only players this criticism applies to are Marshall and Chad Johnson.
I think it depends on the severity and nature of the issue and how much headaches and distractions it might cause Philbin and the team. Any 53 man roster is going to have their share of a**holes and divas. I think Armando is being a bit of a drama queen. Personally I can't see Philbin getting rid of a guy for substance abuse issues if he's a good teammate and the issues aren't having a negative influence on the ballclub. But certainly a guy like Young, who was suspended at Boise St for getting into a fight with a teammate and also wound up sucker punching Louis Delmas, is obviously the kind of teammate Philbin wants no part of. All character issues aren't the same, and my perception of Philbin is that he's more than bright enough to understand the differences.
Marshal had talent, Chad Johnson had zero. The Johnson hitting wife scenario hit just after the NFL starting airing commercials and the president about not abusing women. The team had no choice. I do not think Johnson would have helped this team out anyway. After he was cut 31 other NFL teams thought the same thing. While Johnson was a real good football player his abilitiy to catch and hold onto the football had run its course. Rams have already released Young or thats the scuttlebut I am hearing.
Now released by the Rams according to this report, and might not play football again. http://theshadowleague.com/articles...t-by-rams-sources-say-he-might-not-play-again
