Sean Smith thinks he will get between 8-10 million, on the open market

Considering Smith was a 2nd round pick, I just can't wrap my head around this being an average outcome for these two young payers if he departs..I think there are more factore in the initial evaluation that could of prevented this from happening, like selecting different players.

The 2007 2nd round has by my count only three players who are still playing for their original team.

The 2008 2nd round(which is the most recent with 100% expiration of rookie contracts) is better with seven players still playing for their original teams(21.8%). That is subject to change this off-season depending on what Fred Davis does.

It's not a terribly negative sign that neither Vontae Davis nor Sean Smith will be on the team after their rookie contracts are up. People like to bring up how stupid it was to trade a first round pick for a second round pick a couple years later, but factually that is way better a return than most teams are going to get on their 1st round pick. Likewise, most teams aren't having a discussion on this point on whether or not it's worthwhile to give their expiring second round pick a big raise or not, because it's pretty clear they shouldn't.

 

Smith is an idiot. Guy has some talent but isn't nearly worth 8-10mil a year. I would say he's earned a contract somewhere around 4-6mil a year but considering his stupidity and inability to catch the ball I'd just let him walk. The guy is an *** and I for one won't miss him a bit. Sucks we will loose one of our better CB's but life goes on
