True, and I don't think everyone is taking that into consideration, some seem to to think he's damaged goods, my point is, because of the loss if games involved the last two year relative to what he's gotten paid since we drafted him, he should understand why he shouldn't be paid as the best and come down a bit.

If you go by his consistency on the field, 9-10 is the good mark. He hasn't been playing at the top tier level, especially this past year.

If you're reducing it by his injury concerns, I'd say 8 is a good mark. I'm just not going to be happy if I find we sign him to a 4 year 45 million dollar deal with 32 in guarantees. I think that hurts this team.

I agree with Mr. Clean that the injuries aren't the issue.

Plenty of OL's get banged up. The issue for Long is he is just not playing well. I don't expect him to be healthier next year than at the beginning of this year. He gave up bad sacks and got burned. He is just not a great LT.

Maybe he won't get a big offer and we can get him for $7M per. That still would be risky though. We might simply be better off paying another FA LT $8-10M per who might actually be a better player than Long is right now.

  4. 6M is the number I had in mind but if I were Ireland I would probably begrudgingly go up to 7M

I think so, but the issue before that was the back. That was the reason he was struggling at the beginning of the season. We kept hoping he'd round into shape and be the old Jake Long, but he never really did. That makes me wonder if it's reasonable to ever think he'll be the old Jake Long. Back injuries in high impact jobs rarely (if ever) get better. Maybe the best we can hope for is that Long is recovers from the tricep injury and returns to being a good but no longer elite LT. And further hope that his back stabilizes for a few years rather than flares up again.

I'm no sports doctor, but can these injuries all be related. Compensating for one injury often leads to another as well.

If he did that, then they'd likely let Volmer walk, and we could snag him for 6 mil per, to play RT. Id love that.

Over paying a guy in hopes he doesn't end up on an opponent's roster is ALWAYS the wrong answer.

It would be around 15 million because we would be franchising him for a second year in a row. That leads to an increase of the franchise tag.

EDIT: My mistake. The money is around 15 million because it would be 120% of his salary from last year.

I don't think we used the franchise tag on him last year.

    A lot of incorrect information.

The franchise tag is either the average of the top 5 salaries of that position or 120% of the previous years salary. Whichever is higher.

There ya go. I wasn't completely confident in what I said but I was at work so didn't research it. Basically, this prevents teams from franchising players for less money than they made the year before.

For a healthy Jake it would be a no brainer but now ? No chance he gets tagged and no chance he gets paid even close to that, by any team.

I still have hope he will stay for a decent price of around 6-7 mil for the first year, show he can play and have increases to 8-9 mil for 3 years after that with incentives that make him get paid better if he plays better then he has. Incentives are not unheard of these days. Lets say he plays well in 2013 for 7 million and makes the Pro Bowl due to his good play, then he gets a 2 million dollar bonus. 2014 8 million, if he plays well and goes to Pro Bowl etc, 2 million dollar bonus. Do not have to stick to these exact numbers but I am positive Jake wants to stay and we can work it out.

4 years 35 million , including incentives or escalators if hit and around 15 million guaranteed spread out over 3 years. I like that. He is NOT going to see Joe Thomas money unless he makes a miraculous turn around. Even then, he would be under contract until he is age what, 32 if we sign him for 4 years. Heck, sign him for 5 years with some guaranteed money, who cares. Just get him at a good enough price so his wife does not have to move all that furniture LOL Jake likes the situation in Miami and he likes it a lot. Him, Incognit and Pouncey are pretty close. I kid you not, that means a lot these days to players.

Of course some a hole team could offer him something close to Joe Thomas money then I could not hold it against him if his wife called the moving company but I will not hold it against Ireland if he does not match it. No way.

It's the average of the top 5 at your position or 120% of last season's salary, whichever is greater. With Jake counting something like $11M against the cap last year if we franchise him we are looking at over $13M I believe.

I'm going to chime in on this. We have all these free agent crossroads to determine. Who walks, who stays. I think Long is a keeper and I think he needs to be paid what he wants or close to it. I think Bush can take a hike, I think Hartline can go kick rocks, I think we should franchise Sean Smith, I think Starks go move on as well and we can give the DT job back to Odrick or Kheeston randall. I think the O Line needs to improve and I don't think it improves by not re signing Jake Long. That is stupid in my opinion. Looking at the O Line I see the potential that is there and I don't want to break that up by letting Long walk. We spent the number 1 pick on him for cryys heing out loud! Pay the guy he's done well. He had an off year last season and then it ended with an injury but I do think that he's a mainstay at the tackle position and guys like Long aren't just a dime a dozen.

People will find that out, that players like Jake aren't a dime a dozen, once they see Jonathan Martin being flogged at the LT position. Regardless of who we put on the Right side Martin is going to be eaten alive if they start him at LT in 2013 or RT for that matter. We got three decent football player from center to the LT, do not fuk with it and get the right side straightened out.

It would be great if coaches and players salaries were almost entirely indexed to number of games won.
