I think this is completely unfair. Wayne was one of the most respected owners in the league during his tenure. Under his ownership, we got every big name coach we wanted. We were one of, if not the premier destination for coaches and players alike (save the odd Olin Kreuz). If his biggest sin was hiring and then keeping Dave Wannstedt too long then so be it. A lot of owners have kept coaches/GMs longer then they should have (see Ross, Steven). We were rarely blacked out during Huizenga's ownership and the tickets were always purchased when a blackout was close. I know the playoff game against Indy ended up blacked out but that was a weird circumstance. Also, the NFL instituted a enw rule recently that the teams can buy their own tickets at 30 cents on the dollar to lift blackouts, making it a much less expensive endeavor now then it was then. Huizenga also never shirked on money for players. Why you give Huizenga demerits for not rebuilding and trading draft choices is beyond me? You think he had anything to do with that? The notion that Ross had done more in 5 years I just don;t udnerstand. What's he done? We're on the verge of blackouts because we suck. Other than that, Ross hasn't done anything extraordinary. Am I supposed to be cheering that he's only asking me for $200 million rather than $400 million like he's doing me a favor? And I have no real issue with Ross as an owner other than his choice in general manager, but to say the guy has meant more to the franchise than Wayne is just flabergasting to me
Going after every big name coach, and giving them total control isn't something to be admired IMO. Huizenga's biggest sin was putting people in charge of the franchise that had no stake in the franchise's future. He basically was the girl in high school that was popular - but only because she blew every guy that existed. Ross has actually made tough decisions in the face of adversity, and has shown a lot more courage than Huizenga ever did.
Oh come on. Basically everyone agreed with Huizenga's hiring of Jimmy, Saban and Parcells. Wanny and Cameron were the only ones not universally praised. Also, there is nothing inherently wrong with a coach having the power as long as that guy can do the job. Belichick is handling it just fine and so did Reid for many, many years. Ross has shown more "courage"? You've got to be kidding me. First off, saying that any move an owner of a sports team makes is courageous is hyperbole to the highest order. Second, what's the courageous move? Keeping Ireland even though a lot of people don't like him? Let's not act like he signed Jackie Robinson. Also, Ross wanted the big name coaches. He wanted Harbaugh and Fisher. Is it courageous to keep a mediocre GM instead of giving either of those guys more power? I don;t know. right now, it looks more like idiocy to me, but ok.
Who is everyone? Fans? Thats part of my point. The guy ran the team like a grandparent babysits. Theres nothing wrong with giving a coach power. There absolutely is something wrong with letting a coach bend over an organization, leave an organization at any point with a golden parachute, or letting a coach pretty much be a scumbag without any reproach. Thats exactly my point. He wanted Harbaugh and Fisher. He wasn't going to let them do anything they wanted though. He is actually making decisions. Unlike Wayne, who's decision process was to either watch ESPN for who gets the most publicity, or put up a poll and let fans decide, then give whomever wins a blank check.
So Wayne jumped on the JJ bandwagon.. Great job on the surface. But what parameters did he set when decided to let go of Shula? Did he tell JJ that Marino was either untouchable and that he had to be supported, or traded if Jimmy didn't feel comfortable with him? Wayne made some good coaching moves at the time, but he wan't decisive in the direction of the organization. This continued through Wanny. Were we rebuilding or trading picks to plug holes, without gaining true talent to compete? I will tell you this. If Wayne was still in charge when fans were chanting for Kyle Orton, our GM would have traded for Orton and we would have given up a 2nd or 3rd round pick for him. Where would we be now? How many years did we clamor for a 1st round QB draft choice and how many years did this organization ignore the need to upgrade the QB position? How did Wayne and JJ handle the twilight years of Marino's career? Ross flat out said we needed to draft a QB in the first round and upgrade the position and we went out and DID IT. And to sit here and act like a garbage collector deserved the utmost respect is laughable. Especially after he dismantled the Marlins. Especially how he agreed to hire Parcells to temporarily fix the mess he brought this organization with Cameron, with an opt-out clause, paid in full, knowing he was going to dump the team a year later. Much slicker and shadier character than Ross, yet somehow he has a halo over his head and Ross is a bumbling fool. I'll take Ross 10 out of 10 times, and I hope he can turn this team around. The Jim Harbaugh situation is even more laughable. If I told you that this team had a 15% chance to land Harbaugh and compete in a Super Bowl in two years, and that we would hurt Sparano's feelings in the process, every single true Dolphin fan would take that gamble. The gamble failed as we were going up against nearly impossible odds- It was a dream job to coach San Fran, just like it was for Jimmy to coach the Dolphins after making his name at the U. To bash Ross for taking a gamble that could have led to greatness is just ridiculous.
Its insane to me how the things you see as awesome, I think were horrible and vice versa. Especially, when the things you're defending have left you bitter and fed up. Yet, here we are, finally with the proper power structure, a proper coach and what looks to be a real QB for the first time in a looooooooong time, and you hate it.
He's going to make the region a sh&$ load of money if he does this right..you want it to be free money for everyone? The city will benefit tremendously, they can pay a little bit..
FinD, Ross does have big ears and isn't a charismatic speaker. That is reason enough to hate him. Also, the Dolphins have been very successful. They were in the AFC Championship game 20 years ago, 1993!! We don't need to change or shake things up a bit here! Keep sailing forward by trading away all your draft picks, overpaying for Kyle Orton and Matt Flynn and hope that eventually one of them pans out. Hopefully before the 30th anniversary of our last AFC Championship game appearance!!!
First off, I never said Wayne had a halo. I just said the suggestion that Riss had done more for the franchise in 5 years then Wayne did in 20 was a silly statement, and it is. You're entitled to whatever opinion you want but this one is baseless considering Ross hasn't really done anything You also contradict yourself by suggesting that Wayne should have told Jimmy to draft a QB and get involved in personnel yet also slam him by suggesting he would've traded for Orton. Either an owner should be involved to that level or not. You seem to want it both ways. And I didn't slam Ross for going after Harbaugh. I loved it. Unfortunately he failed to close the deal. But to suggest definitively that we're on the right track is foolish. We know very little about this coach and feelings on Ireland are mixed at best. All I know is that Wayne tried to win every year. He went after the best in the business and landed them. Certainly he trusted Wanny far too long. Just like Ross might be trusting Ireland far too long
If this turns out to be true, you get a Pulitzer. And the commission has indeed passed a resolution: http://www.wsvn.com/news/articles/l...mission-approves-proposed-stadium-renovation/
For those not in South Florida, TLH stands for The Lime House. Its basically the governor's office. Its a play on the White House, but its in Miami so its lime colored. It really is painted the color of lime.
Huizenga put $300 million of his own money into stadium renovations, hired the guy Ross loves as GM, and handed off a division-winning team after selling in early 2009. Huizenga didn't exactly destroy the hotel room on the way out.
First off, I don't "hate" anything. I don't think Irekand is good at his job. Philbin I guess is ok but we'll see. Tanny hopefully will be good. This structure that you're so proud of only works if the guy picking players is good. Your continuous sarcastic comments towards me I really don't understand. You immediately jump to extremes. Nothing in my original post slammed Ross. I have no issues with Ross. I just think saying that he's been some spectacular owner is a little premature
Not exactly. All that happened is that the commission voted to ask the legislature to allow them to raise the bed tax. Once the state legislature approves then the county and team will negotiate the deal. So it looks likely but could fall apart at any time
Vindication bro! You are the stadium prophet, lets hope we reclaim some home field advantage with this!
I'm reading so much excitement from canes fans as well, they want it real bad..I hope we Can spread the enthusiasm, and help both programs, and share the stadium unlike any other college/pro program has ever done, and help the team come out with pride at home, and give them that energy that a more intimate setting can provide.. "To move or not to move, that is the question"......concrete that is..
Yes! The Marlins had a very hard time with them. The best thing that the Dolphins have going for them here is the fact that they've never received money from the counties or state in their entire existence.
This may be answered but I don't feel like reading through. 1. Are they going to do it in bits and pieces? Like...are they going to do the seating and video boards during one offseason, then the canopy the next one? Or all at once? 2. Before the 2014 season was the date right? SO January-July 2014 would be the timeframe?
Ross should think about doing this during his renovations. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...ums-could-feature-less-sitting-more-standing/
I'm not DJ, but the standing part is a bad idea to me. If standing while watching a football game is cool, why does no one (or at best, very few) do it at home while watching the game?
Actually it's not DJ. Not down here in Miami anyway. From the time WH took over Joe Robbie stadium, he then started to enforce the sit down rule to his ushers. I used to be on the sidelines back then and every time I stood up and started yelling DEFENSE.........DEFENSE......DEFENSE people in my section would stand up with me and chime in.... Then some older fan would run to the usher and tell them to ask me to sit down. The usher would go up and down the isle telling people to sit. The people would start sitting and lose interest in yelling and screaming. They kicked me out umpteen times and threatened to take away my season tickets (5 seats) every season until I moved to the endzones where I saw people standing a lot more thru entire games. Now it may not be the reason but I think standing and screaming helps keep people into it.
